It's a really simple atmosphere model.

There are 3 properties: Albedo, Infrared Emissivity, and Visible Emissivity.

Albedo is how much energy the planet absorbs or reflects. And the Emissivity is how much energy the atmosphere absorbs or allows to escape.

Try playing around with the values for Earth and let me know if you have any questions.

wait; i have universe sandbox 2.1.5, yet i don't see or have a Visible Emissivity slider below the Albedo and Infrared Emissivity sliders; am i missing something?

No. Visible Emissivity was removed in 2.1.5.

The planet temperature feature is a lot of fun to play around with.  It really allows better planning of a solar system.
