It is possible in 7.6 billion years the sun to engulf earth or not

Well according to the system its not, but what I am concerned about is the calculations. The system for this concept makes an immediate change in mass and volume, but what if the change was gradual like in real time? Would the planets take a different path? And the Earth was very very close to the sun, surely killing us all, but everybody knows one AU is only the average distance between Earth and Sun. Would this also play a role? At the time it is impossible to know...
