You are a subtropical cyclone.
« on: June 22, 2011, 05:29:57 PM »
You are located in the Atlantic basin. You're in the mid-latitudes. Where are you going to go?

Towards the high.

To warmer waters! I just love Florida!

To colder waters! Let it snow!

You went towards the high.

This is a difficult climb into higher pressures for you! You begin to dissipate.

FURTHER!

You turned south ignoring the isobars telling you you need to go north! You find your way into a niche in the pressure, and suddenly... What's that? Thunder? Oh my gosh your center is filling up with thunderstorms!

Make U turn, this is scary! *shudders*

My adrenaline is just getting started!

You like the cold. I bet you live in Maine.
« Reply #5 on: June 22, 2011, 05:40:23 PM »
It's getting chilly now... You begin your law-abiding trek northwards, and you skirt along the coast of New England. You generate a long line of thunderstorms logarithmically extending from your center. Congratulations! You've become an extratropical cyclone! You probably were like this before you were subtropical, so welcome home!

Peanut butter blizzard time!

Don't drop a bunch of snow and anger the humans.

You're quite stubborn, cyclone.
« Reply #6 on: June 22, 2011, 05:44:03 PM »
You climb up the anticyclone of high pressure, and what's this... You're losing clouds... You're cooling off... Oh no... You've lost your closed circulation.

Sorry, but you've dissipated and have become one with the anticyclone.

You've turned north. Your thunderstorms begin to quiet down and move out of the center, you stroll up the coast of the Carolinas, and up past Virginia.

I'm comfortable with this.

Cyclones don't have adrenaline, silly!
« Reply #8 on: June 22, 2011, 05:51:16 PM »
Central convection continues, you've got thunderstorms and torrential rains... but what is this, you've got a call from Mother Nature. There's a species who ignores her and you're meant to do 2 things. Transfer energy, and knock some sense into the ignorant species. What are you going to do?

I spy Florida.

Spin some fish and go on my own way.

Boom! You slide right along New York and the rest of the New England states. You've got some anger you're taking out, I just know it. You dump 10 feet of snow on New Jersey, and several feet in many other places. You knock out power and put thousands in the cold, you also knock over trees and slightly destroy several structures.

Go on my way.

You, as an extratropical cyclone slide along and begin to dissipate in Nova Scotia because you can, you run into some higher pressures and your circulation ceases to exist. You've had a pleasant life.

Game end.

Hello. May I address you as Tropical Storm [insert your name here]? The National Hurricane Center have named you, and they're preparing Florida for a Category 2. Defy their predictions and make them feel fury.

I'll do as you say sir.

Spare the poor humans.

You shouldn't defy her. They did.
« Reply #15 on: June 22, 2011, 06:05:49 PM »
You chose to defy. Heh. Well, you've become a tropical storm, so make some use of it for yourself. You move up the East coast and slide out to sea. You begin an extratropical transition and you've gone through all three phases of cyclones! Your circulation begins do die out, and you've had a nice life. The low pressure center ceases to exist.

Game end.

Your track:

...MAJOR HURRICANE $$NAME$$ INTENSIFIES BEYOND PREDICTION...

Great! You've done it! You make landfall as a Category 4 at Cape Canaveral, Florida, your eye begins to fill, and your torrential and severe thunderstorms begin to weaken and subside. Soon you're just some swirling stratus clouds. Your remnants get absorbed by a front, and you are all but forgotten. You killed 562 people, destroyed buildings and crops wherever they stood, and caused billions in damage. They won't recover for years!

Game end.

Yasi!

Australian cyclones are cyclonic. :P Yeah it was a Cat 5 australian scale! That's like Cat 4 Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Speed Scale.

Anyway, half of that picture isn't even the cyclone, as always media over exaggerating. Yeah, you'd maybe get rain from the right side... but probably not much. You can tell it's a whole seperate circulation center, and this discussion should probably go in the Hurricanes, Cyclones, and Typhoons topic.
