Asteroid Belts?
« on: May 09, 2011, 11:15:08 AM »
First off, let me say that this simulation is amazing. I just picked it up a couple days ago off of Steam and have been having a blast messing with the physics. On to my question...

Is there a way to create an asteroid belt like the one featured in Our Solar System? So far, the best ive been able to do is make one using the ring feature and then changing the inner and outer radius of the ring to suit my needs, but the problem is it doesn't have any thickness to it.

Any ideas would be appreciated! Thanks

Good question and a good idea.

You can currently hit the '1' key to spawn the asteroid belt from our Solar System, but this is a debug tool that I left in and that key may be removed in the future.

Can you add this idea to this list? (creating rings with height)

I have edited the community idea spreadsheet to add my idea. Please vote if you think its a good idea, as I'm sure everyone will be able to make great use of a feature like this!

Oh yeah... It's a good idea. There's are quite a few limitations and problems with the way you add and remove rings to a planet. I hope to fix that in the next few months and improve the overall set of features.

Pressing 1 to make an asteroid belt crashes my game, has it been removed from the game now?

What i do is just spawn a ring around the sun and move the rings out

I tried this just recently and got an odd effect where the rings spawned several orbits away from where the sun actually was

For the Things I use Uni Sand for - Asteroid Belt Tools would be SUCH an advantage.

I am using it to Model ( show ) the Star Systems we have Scouted / Discovered in my Sci Fi Game.

This is a multi-player Play By Post Game - and as I am the G.M.
I write all the Discovery Reports.

System ( Greek Letters ), Star Type, Star Mass, Surface Temperature.
Number of Planets.

Then for each Planet - Mass, Atmosphere, Hydrosphere ( water ) percentagre cover,
Average  surface Temperature - or Max and min for Planets like Mercury.

Asteroid Belt - inner and and outer, range of sizes, many or few.
However - some Systems have more than one Belt, some only a Belt or Belts.

Is there some reason we can only write a fewl lines in this Box ??

The problem is - it would be great if we had an Option to spawn an Asteroid Belt, with Parameters - inside, outside, number of Asteroids, range of Sizes, etc.

BUT - It would have to create actual Asteroid Objects - then as we build Bases on them, they can get Named.
Plus, should be able to change Properties on individual Asteroids, Mass, Diameter, Density - Temperature maybe, Surface colour.  Even add texture files.

Oh Yeh - I would LOVE a Tool to generate Texture Files ( Img ) for different Earth-Like Planets, plus moons, Asteroids, etc.
