To get more accurate placement, i pause the simulation and add all my objects, then i change the individual co-ordinates and velocities (and also auto-orbits). For example, for your 9x9 grid, place 9 moons arbitrarily and set there z-coordinates to 0, and there x and y co-ordinates to (0,0) (0,1 AU) (0,2 AU) (1 AU,0).... you get the picture.
I used this to create a binary star system with two suns and a planet sat dead at there centre of mass, and the planet didnt move as the stars orbited around it, so that shows it must be accurately placed!
