Error code KKAJN (Inexplicably resolved)
« on: April 29, 2011, 05:05:59 PM »
Now, the original "missing steamwrapper.dll" bug has been fixed. But I don't have any idea what causes this:

I'm on the steam version, windows 7, 64 bit.

Weird. When does this happen?
Is it occasional or every time to try and start Universe Sandbox?

Whenever I start it.

I tried the nonsteam version, it doesn't give that error but it crashes anyway with the normal safe mode or normal mode screen.

When I start it, the loading thing shows (planet orbiting sun), before showing this error.

Got the links. Thanks.

No time to review right now, but I will in the next day or two and get back to you.

Sorry, I'm slammed right now.

We will resolve this problem for sure.

I'm really sorry you're having a problem. Thanks for the log files they were helpful.

I've just uploaded a new version (non-Steam) that will help identify this problem.

You can either run the "update.exe" program that's in the Universe Sandbox folder that's probably here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Universe Sandbox

Or just re-download the setup file from the Install link above and install it over your existing installation (no need to uninstall first).

Run it again. You'll likely still get that error, but the log files will have much more information about what happened than before.

Can you email me the Sandbox Log.txt file?

After I get the log files and fix the error I will release a new version with the fix to Steam and non-Steam in the next few days.

The error in question is this:
The type initializer for '<Module>' threw an exception.

This says you're missing a DLL:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4852965/typeinitializationexception-the-type-initializer-for-module-threw-an-excepti

It looks like this is either a .NET installation issue or a C++ redistributable install issue.

1
Try installing this:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=9b2da534-3e03-4391-8a4d-074b9f2bc1bf&displaylang=en

2
And try to run Universe Sandbox.

3
If that doesn't work install this:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=A5C84275-3B97-4AB7-A40D-3802B2AF5FC2&displaylang=en

4
Run Universe Sandbox

If that doesn't work I'll come up with something else to try. This is a solvable problem.

Neither fix worked.

My copy is installed to my W:/ drive. Would this make any difference?

Also, I installed it on my awful netbook, and it works. However, it's really, really bad. Can't get more than 5 FPS on just a normal galaxy. Makes the thing heat up extremely, too.

I don't think so, mine is installed on my E: drive and works.

You can reduce the dust multiplier slider in the advanced settings in the simulation settings panel (the one which you can access from the left side in the simulation). Decreasing it will result in fewer particles and better performance.
I think the program will always try to use as much CPU as it can while simulating something, though.

Note that I'm not actually using any particles. Just planets and stars

The stars in the galaxy are particles/dust.

The stars in the galaxy are particles/dust.

I know. I'm not using any galaxies. Was just providing it as an example. Just planets and stars alone work decent but the overheating still is an issue.

I suppose there's no easy way to find what DLL is missing, is there?

Apparently reinstalling/repairing .NET can sometimes fix this issue.

Do you know how to do that? It would be worth trying.

When I have more time I can reply with more detailed instructions.

Worst case a reinstall of Windows would fix this problem (which I can understand not wanting to do).

I've repaired the main .NET thing but not the client version.

Which versions does US make use of?

And I added some new code that should better trap the error you are having.

Can you run the new version on Steam (2.1.1) and send me the log files again?

And something else to try (as the module in question was compiled against an earlier version of .NET):

Try the 7 steps here to repair the earlier versions of .NET:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2007/03/26/how-to-repair-the-net-framework-2-0-and-3-0-on-windows-vista.aspx

This says that this is how you repair them in Windows 7 (even though it says Vista):

This is so weird. I'm running out of ideas.

I really think it's a configuration issue of some kind.

Try installing and running this and let me know the results:

I forgot to mention, the error code has changed

And several of these errors came up in CBS.log after the sfc scan:

Code: [Select]
2011-05-02 22:58:33, Info                  CSI    000002be [SR] Cannot repair member file [l:22{11}]"msvcm90.dll" of Microsoft.VC90.CRT, Version = 9.0.30729.4974, pA = PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE_INTEL (0), Culture neutral, VersionScope neutral, PublicKeyToken = {l:8 b:1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b}, Type = [l:10{5}]"win32", TypeName neutral, PublicKey neutral in the store, hash mismatch

I uninstalled all the x86 VC2008 redists. And it worked.

how

Have you tried any of the suggestions in this thread?

Or steps 4 or 5 or 7 from here?
http://universesandbox.com/forum/index.php/topic,3513.0.html

This is probably because some system files are messed up on your computer.

Let me know what you try and what happens.

none of those steps changed anything and i don't see any specific recommendations in this thread. i do see that the op says the problem cleared up for him on it's own essentially, while he was trying to fix another problem, maybe you could point out something else in specific i should try.

the dotnet 1.1 on my machine is the only one that fails that verifier prog. what should i do about that? windows won't allow me to re-install that old version because there are three or four newer versions installed on the system...

i should also mention that i've got 175 other games on steam, all fully functioning...
