Evolution Simulators
« on: January 29, 2011, 12:07:11 PM »
This simulation is funny. It's basically evolution applied to 2D-cars. Cars logically can't evolve, because they don't store information about them which can mutate and don't replicate. But In this simulation, the 2D cars are selected based on how good they are at traveling on a bumpy 2D road.

Try it. After running about 10 minutes, I think my best score is 804,9.

Link

This one was the program it was inspired by. It appears to run much faster through the generations.

And here's Richard Dawkin's Biomorph program, though it's clearly artificial selection only, it's still very exciting.

Also, there's an a-life simulator called DarwinBots, which is a lot more advanced. :)

Post more evolution-like simulashunz or share your results here if you want...
And yes, I know I remade the topic, but I thought it'd be best to include many similar programs in one topic rather than going on a topic frenzy after finding all sorts of awesome programs (though I knew DarwinBots already, and have read about Biomorphs, but never found it).

Ok, I just read the number in parenthesis is the target score, which is the double of the best score from the last generation.

So, my record is now 475,3. :)

Also my cars in the second simulation got worse overall, yet a few continued to improve. (a lot like these days, haha)

Yay, 495,9! I didn't get a screenshot though.

But there's one more evolution game I know of... A funny fact is, that it was a creationist I debated who showed it to me. :P
It is like the cars, but more advanced and in 3D, plus it's meant to simulate all sorts of "organisms" which travel across things defined by you. I'll try to find it.

So, more evolution sims:
Framsticks is a pretty good one, there's a free version and a shareware version that has some more features. Slightly complex creatures due to them being able to have equilibrium and touch modules.
EvoRunners is a very good sim. Although the author seems pretty dead, and you need permission to access his blog.
Here is a demonstration of a creature evolved in a very similar program, that you can actually get your hands on.

You blind watchmakers, you.

Like this? :P
A program written to evolve watches.

Framsticks looks really exciting, think I'll download it soon.

Okay now I've gotten a car to go 422 meters. It had three wheels, all equal size and minimal colored things~

I never tire of DarwinBots... it's fun but I've never sucsessfully made anything. I'm gonna make like a 3 gene thing for the heck of it. lol

I also don't even understand half of it.

Edit: I'm getting how the "DNA" works a bit. I'm trying to make my bot center the view on another bot if it detects one, and then have it attack it if it doesn't have much energy.

In the latest version cars can actually break apart if they have a hard enough impact with something.

Started the car sim yesterday and ran it all the time my computer was turned on. I used the hills simulation. Here are the results. The best car has the code:

eNqzP+gUIVZ79579Zweuc69WrbJ//PynUs2Zs/YvCqS/7f//3/6VmeOqnTNn2V+99PrSsrQ0+yclDMpnQ8McmPj/fr/BwGB/5tE8Hr537x2YjXxuLQDqu3t1I7MW0JwvzonXl717b//ATF6SxcXZ/kmrqD6TkqL9ypkgMMv+B29bhvTuPf+BwEEgzVh97bFH9k8qTuSGl5czMDCwO0iovPpzTybY/gcDDLDAGPbv35g8YHFxATKZHVh/cyXM3bTE/sHi9MIHDAwg8+zvHTTK3tP/2f7D3Yb+njNngeoYHSSlFf+Eef22/1bhseWDdxHYXvHGiH2r9MrsX7zIKXvR0QHW+4flhJ+gj539V6aJcxuAOh+d2cBwx+oRw8K1/xjuGjcz5FbwMdybtYFhYv5ehh9JLxnajOsZpkRqM8Sc1mL4PGkRQ46PH8PcS2sZFpi5MTzYNxnkRgBaJaMN

966.7... The record on hills is 1014.6. :P

Click "input seed", then paste it into the large empty box for text. I think.
