I found the piston circuit page on the MC wiki and yes, to answer my question, it is possible, however with multiple pistons (and it'll be around the peremiter), it becomes really complicated. Heck, now that I've thought about it, I have no idea whether there will be enough room in the lighthouse itself and of course, if I have to make it bigger, the whole setup can get bigger the more stuff I add.

It could be simplified by using two different sets (okay, maybe not simplified) of pistons, one pushing up and the other pushing down. I'd have to make the light emitting section into bands or something, no idea.

Using redstone lamps seems like a much simpler solution, even if a more expensive one, than a complex thing with pistons.

Having the light emitting part be in several rings might actually be cool though.

you can do it, just have the pistons expand and contract in the right order.

Its the complexity, not the amount of materials thats easier said than done. I have some redstone, redstone torches, leftover repeaters, and lots of slimeballs (they're common in the Kaeshar region for some reason, especially common in the Gaia Hall underground area since large ones spawn more often there).

Mudkipz, whats the smallest circular radius you can cram the circuitry inside for this kind of thing? I'm just checking since the top floor of my plan would be a circle with a radius of 4, which should be enough.

I've only built the base section of the lighthouse atm.

I think the redstone lamp idea would look much better anyway.

It doesn't work that way, unfortunately. Correct me if I'm wrong, but last I tried, it did not pull the blocks back with it.

Mudkipz did say that I would need at least a square 10 blocks on the sides, meaning that I'd need a circle of at least 10 radius (I think, I'd have to check mineconics and I'm using an iPad ATM), I wouldn't mind flaring out the top and adding a platform, but a 10 block radius?

Edit: mineconics is kind of clumsy with the iPad, but it's more like 7 or 8 diameter, which is still twice the radius, but let me see if I can alter my plans in a way that would have it look good. It'll probably be a strange looking lighthouse, but a lighthouse nonetheless.

i thought you meant vertically :P

a horizontal piston extender is a bit easier

bla's drawings is flawed though. He mentioned two sides. If side A extends the pistons, and side B retracts them.

But redstone can't turn off pistons, only the absence of it will cause pistons to retract. And because A is on, B can't retract. And A can't retract properly.

edit: ok i can fit the device into a 12x12x4 space. the pistons extend and retract on the side, sadly (horizontal).

I was actually thinking of making a saucer shaped top to accommodate it. For the design in the video, that looks cool. Good thing I've only built the base of it up to five blocks, given the radius shown in the video, I'll have to make it radius 9 or 8. I had thought of making the base radius 10 earlier, so its not a problem. Maybe I'll just go and make it radius 10 as thats what I was origionally going to go with (was using the Ampluterra lighthouse as a model for the scale, but the style is going to be different. I'm using stone brick for the base for example.)

Edit: Theres this: Revolving Lighthouse Tutorial However, the thing broke during the first run :/ I think its the minecart since it pretty soon lags behind and gets out of sync. Maybe using a more circular track?

I want a lighthouse effect, not a blinker.....

Bla, could you send a message or something to whoever manages the plugin list from the Clan Client (is that what its called?) side to update the Safecreeper plugin if you haven't already? I looked at Bukkit and its definetly updated to 1.2.5 .

Edit: The server is acting up again since I'm getting a socket error every once in a while. The latest one said something about connection reset by peer and some stuff about socket error and socket reset or something.

Edit: I've finished the main structure of the lighthouse and placed out a possible layout for the glowstone (or lava if I decide to use it). Now we just need to figure out the mechanisms and stuff.

Nah, I'll just equip it with a glowstone powered death laser :)

Anyways, if I want the glowstone band to be four blocks tall and the pistons are vertical, how much area will you need? I'm just checking here.

Also, Bla, how much glowstone do we have in collective storage? Theres only 16 glowstone in public storage atm.

i suggest you use redstone lamps :P i've only ever made a horizontal piston extender and i imagine a vertical one would be at least 8x8x5 and probably bigger

There is 35 glowstone in the collective storage.
There's meant to be 16 in the public one.

Damn, that changes everything. Unless I use a single band of glowstone/redstone lamps, I'll have to use lava, unless netherstone would work. Unless of course, a glowstone mining expedition is planned.....

Didn't we have a lot more not all that long ago?.....

Edit: Also, where did the poll for the Gaia Hall diamond blocks go in the voting center?

We used to have around 200 some months ago, but it has dropped out of the public storage over time until I seized it for the collective storage. By then there were around 50 left.
There haven't been any glowstone expeditions for months that I know of, which have contributed glowstone to Spawntown. I have been thinking of doing such an expedition sometimes.

I've decided to go with a single band of redstone lamps and I posted up a new poll for 32 glowstone for the lamps.
