Realistic 3D City Game
« on: January 18, 2011, 12:20:40 PM »
A realistic alternative to the old 3D city game. :)
It takes place in the "Usafreciga" Region (Universe Sandbox Forum Realistic City Game).
Google Document
Link to the model

Manual
How to play
1: Download the latest version of Google SketchUp.
2: Sign up to the 3D Warehouse.
3: Open the file at our city game’s SketchUp page. - Currently, download and edit the latest file attached to our posts.
4: Claim an empty zone by filling it with your own unique color for the ground beneath your city. Please choose/make one similar to your neighboring cities. You can choose colors similar to grass, dirt, sand and rock. Ask Bla to make a new zone if there's no white zone.
5: Now build your city hall. It doesn’t have to be anything big in the beginning, just a small red building. Afterwards, you can begin building residential buildings, commercial buildings, industry, agriculture etc… According to the rules below.
6: Save the changes to the model. It should work to click the upload button and just leave all the text as it is (if you change it, it will also be saved as the same model), otherwise you might be asked before closing the program. Don't be afraid to do anything wrong, it can be reverted back.

I have to approve all the changes to the file, otherwise I'll need the e-mail address registered on the 3D Warehouse (don't post it publicly/in the topic). No one is forced to give me their e-mail address to play this game. I could also make it publicly editable, but then we risk having our city vandalized.
Ok, I can see the file has a history so you can revert it back. I'll leave it so that everyone can edit it, and revert back if anyone vandalizes it, and change the system if trouble arises.

Rules
1: Don’t use any textures, only plain colors (more details on allowed colors are below).
2: Only build on your own zone.
3: Follow the rules of growth.
4: Use the colors on your buildings, roads, pavements and planted grassy areas correctly.
5: Don’t shift-click with a color, as it might paint buildings outside of your zone.
6: Post taken if you're editing the file. If you don't upload it within 6 hours, your taken expires.

Growth
To simulate relatively realistic growth, you’re not allowed to build a lot of skyscrapers immediately.
The height limit on your buildings is determined by these formulas:

One floor is 3 meters.
The numbers are rounded down, so if you have 235 buildings, you may build 4,35 floors, but it is rounded down to 4, so your building limit is still 4 floors until you have 300 buildings.
The numbers are approximate. You aren’t meant to count 1500 buildings before building a 48 meter tall building, just count an area of maybe 25 buildings, find some similarly sized areas to get 100, and find more areas similar in size to the new area to get 500, until you get an approximate number. If you’re severely in doubt, just stay below the limit and expand until you aren’t anymore.

You can expand your zone so that the unused land you have is up to (in square meters):

You can see the area of a surface by right clicking it and selecting “Entity Info”.
You are not allowed to expand your zone in a way that makes it impossible for another player to expand.

Colors
Your buildings, roads, pavements and (not natural) grassy areas must use the following colors.
Building colors:
Red (255,000,000): Public buildings owned by the state.
Orange (255,127,000): Residential buildings owned by the state.
Green (000,255,000): Residential buildings, unspecified owners.
Dark yellow (153,153,000): Industry.
Teal (000,255,255): Residential buildings owned by individuals/corporations.
Blue (000,000,255): Commercial/public buildings owned by individuals/corporations.
Surface colors:
Yellow (255,255,000): Agriculture (ground only, houses are residence, other buildings industry)
Black (058,058,058): Roads (asphalt).
Grey (142,142,142): Pavement and paved roads.
Dirt (153,107,061): Roads (gravel).
Dark green (000,153,000): Planted grass
Light blue (000,128,255): Water
Water in lakes can also be colored a transparent shade of blue.

Alright, before I start, this in the rules:
Quote
2: Only build on other players’ zones.
I am confused.

Edit: I had a go anyway, if i did anything out of place let me know.

Sorry, I meant "only build on your own zone"/"don't build on other players' zones". Anyways, the update is fine. But can you save it into the old model so we don't end up with lots of files in different places, or is that impossible?
And do you know why are the lines white with marks at the edges now?
Also, it can't be edited as it is uploaded now. You have to select "Edit" and change the settings so that everyone can edit and uncheck the box which says you have to accept the changes first.
There's a history for files, so nothing is deleted by saving it in the same place.

Alrighty, thanks for clearing that up. In answer to your questions:
I don't think I can save over your upload, but I think you can set people as contributors, it requires sending an email and having them accept.
The white lines are there because I have a different style set on my Sketchup (Window>Styles)
Finally, I'll fix the upload so you can edit it.

This really isn't good... It destroys much of the fun in the game if we have to spread out a million files on the 3D Warehouse with no real connection to each other. We could make a collection for them, but...
I suggest we just upload our cities in here as long as the file size is still below the limit. Can you upload yours to the forum?
(Btw, I still don't think I can edit your file. Only the details about the file, like description and title, but I can't download it/edit it in SketchUp.)

Sketchup files are small enough to be uploaded here. Bu you can compress it to an archive to slice the size by about 2/3.
This would probably be the most streamline way to do this.

Yes, but let's not do that before the file size becomes a problem. :)
Otherwise we'll just spend more time compressing and extracting than the extra time we would use to download it. Anyways, thanks for uploading it, might build something soon...

Yes. Here aren't turns, so we can build whenever we want. The file is above the image.

Edit: Here I've built a little more.

Which of the places below do you want?
You can also draw the zone if you want, as long as it's adjacent to our zones and isn't larger than 50.000 square meters.

Yes, start by making a red building. It has to be either 6 meters or less than 6 meters tall.
After that, you can build other buildings. Green are houses, blue are shops etc., red are public buildings like police stations, dark yellow are factories etc.
Roads are also useful. They're black if they are made of asphalt, like our roads. You can look at our cities for reference.

There's a more detailed manual in the first post, but if anything is confusing, just ask.

I think I might have risen my buildings too rapidly. Conformation?
I've also reduced my Phat city hall.

Yes, the limit on your buildings is still 3 meters, and your city hall 6 meters. You need 100 buildings before being allowed to build buildings 2 floors high, and 75 buildings before you may build 3 floors on your city hall.
You can fix it if you want, or should we continue from version 4?
Here's a tiny fix to my city from version 4, if we continue from that one, where I had forgotten to change the color of a face.

3 meters in the game is one floor. That is actually too high. My house is 2.4 meters for the first and only floor.

Yes, there isn't 3 meters to the ceiling in most houses, but remember the ceiling between each floor also has a height. I think 3 meters will be more realistic than 2.
