The reason why gold and iron doesn't give you xp is probably because you can place them again and thus keep mining them.
With silk touch I guess you could also do that with diamond blocks, hmm.

You'd still need silk touch for the gold and iron. Still though, I don't think it would be worth it using up a silk touch enchantment just for that. They could easily set it up to only work with natural blocks and not player placed (that is, obtained through silk touch) blocks.

Heres a new update in the MCwiki snapshot page or one I missed the first time around, LavaForge is now obsolete!

Smelting in a furnace with a lava bucket now leaves an empty bucket for you to retrieve (I wonder why they didn't get this fixed earlier, seriously.)

How would you need silk touch for gold and iron? Silk touck doesn't do anything to them. When you mine them, you obtain the ore block, not an item like coal and diamond.
I also think that's the reason why the fortune enchantment doesn't work on gold and iron. Because you could mine them and then get two iron blocks, and multiply those. Yes, I think they could implement a way to see if the block is player-placed, but I'm pretty sure that this is the reason why they don't let these things apply to those blocks.

Does that mean they are only accessable by the player who placed it? Seems to kind of defeat the purpose a little. Still, it does fix the problems that might arise on MP servers.

'removed the downwards knockback while drowning' That knockback never made sense to me and doesn't help when you're one or two blocks from the surface, it can actually keep you from surfacing.

Boats now dropping as boats rather than bits of wood is helpful.

Also, for the end of july pre-release, it says multiple chunks not loading will be fixed, I guess that means worldholes will be significantly reduced if not eliminated altogether.

They released a new screenshots and among other things, creepers are stronger O.O (in the actual MC thread for the snapshot, they said that its a maybe). Its supposed to differ by difficulty scale, but whats on the wiki is different from whats in the news post, so...

They made many performance improvements, so maybe there will be less lag.

Cool, so there should be a bukkit release within a day of the 1.3 release.
