The English grammar is simple. The words don't even have genders, like in German. There you have to find the gender of every noun in order to make a correct sentence. You can't just simply say "the". "The" becomes "der" if it's nominative male, "den" if it's accusative male, "des" if it's genitive and "dem" if it's dative. And if it's a female noun, it's "die", "die", "der" and "der". And if it's neutral, it's "das", "das", "des" and "dem". And if it's plural, it's "die", "die", "der" and "den".
Like this:Das Mädchen (The girl)Das Auto (The car)

So if you want to say "the girl has the chair", girl is a neutral noun (das, das, des, dem) in the nominative case, and chair is a male noun (der, den, des, dem) in the accusative case. So you say:"Das Mädchen hat den Stuhl."

How is a chair a male?
Yes, but it's about as far away from English as German is. Most words have only a small connection, if they haven't lost it completely, and our grammar and syntax is different, so...
