Not at all related to this thread, but good question...

It's because it's a star with stellar evolution turned on. Uncheck "Evolve" to enable the density lock.

I also get this issue. The logo with the loading animation shows up, Steam GUI works correctly, but all I see is a star field which I can pan around using left and right mouse buttons. Attaching some logs

Intel i5 4670K @ 3.80GHz
GTX760 2gb (a bit older drivers of 327.23 because the newest ones are crashy for me, probably gonna RMA the card)
8gb DDR3
Gigabyte Z87x-D3H (updated BIOS)
