A lot of space on the hardisk, but Universe Sandbox laggs :/
« on: October 07, 2013, 12:29:36 PM »
I have problems with Universe Sandbox lagging, and there's a few or no programs running in the background.

Have anyone else had this problem while having either Dual or single hardisk?

hard drive space doesn't affect performance.

how many objects do you have in the simulation and what are the specifications of your computer in terms of ram, processors, etc?

Computer: Samsung
OS: Windows 8
Intel Core i5
Hardisk space around 1 Tb.
Ram: between 2 - 6 Gb. (I'm going to check in the morning when I wake up. I'm using my phone right now)

How many objects I use in the simulations vary...I try my best with binary, tripple and multi-star systems with planets.

The specifications
Here is the actual system of my newest computer:
Windows Version: Windows 8
Producer: Samsung Electronics
Prosessor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3210M CPU @ 2.50GHz  2.50 GHz
Installed Memmory (RAM): 8,00 GB (7,89 GB can be used)
System type: 64-bit OS, x64-based prosessor

US is not very optimized for multicore use from my experience but it DOES try, it uses most of your first core and very little of the others so you have to figure that your CPU speed will be a limitation here and from the looks of it you also don't have a dedicated graphics card so your processor is doubling as your graphics card as well (Intel HD 4000) degrading your performance even more.

The Graphics are Radeon on my Samsung PC, thought. :/

Make sure that it is switching to your dedicated card and not using the integrated chipset.  What is the model of your PC, is it using Catalyst for graphics settings?  If so try forcing US to use the Radeon in Catalyst's settings.  This will take some load off of your CPU.

What is the model of your PC?

Check one of my earlier posts for what kind of PC I'm using (it was posted earlier today).

Yes, I see that post but a model number would give the exact specs so we know what we are dealing with, just saying it is a Samsung tells me nothing.  You could have a lower powered version with something disabled on the CPU to cut costs.  Model number will tell us all we need to know  ;)

Does the simple 'Our Solar System' simulation stutter or run slow?

It's the first thumbnail image in the list on the main menu...

Press Alt+F to see the fps (frames per second) in the upper left corner.

What fps are you getting for 'Our Solar System' ?

around 10fps :/

The first week after I installed it on my new computer, it runned smoother.

I can give a hint on the appearance of my new computer.

It is a relatively thin white and red Samsung PC with no CD/DVD room (which sucks, because I can't install certain games). Around 15'' Screen.

A model number would still be better than knowing what color it is.  I still have a feeling your laptop is not switching to the dedicated graphics card if it has one, I bet it is running on the integrated Intel HD 4000 and not your ATI.  Can you paste the first part of your DxDiag like this?  To run DxDiag click start and type in dxdiag and make sure you run the 64-bit version if you have a 64-bit PC, then just copy what I copied and paste it into the post.  This problem could also be caused by a lack of available memory to the program from your graphics chip/card using most of your RAM at the time leaving little for programs.  Integrated graphics chips are nowhere near as powerful as Intel would like you to believe, they are garbage when it comes to anything more than light gaming.

i don't have a dedicated graphics card, my processor has a lower passmark score, and even i get 30 to 60 fps with the solar system simulation. could it be malware or something?

I searched for DxDiag on my new computer, but I don't think DirectX have been installed on it :/
Because there was no results from either searches.
My old computer does have DirectX and DxDiag.

That is very strange, DirectX should be installed natively with windows 8, it should come in the installation of windows itself.  I do have one question that I should have asked before, are you running US with your laptop plugged in or unplugged?  Most laptops will reduce performance to save power when you run it unplugged, they will not use the dedicated graphics card and will use less processor power to save battery, this could be what is happening or the power setting is not set to "high performance" when on AC power.

It's not unplugged.

But I think I solved the problem :/

I installed the trial Version of MPL3D Solar System, but I think it was the main cause of the lag.
The reason why is because when I uninstalled it, Universe Sandbox started to run smoother.

I Guess MPL3D Solar System demands a lot of the graphic card that I have on this computer :/
