Title: PRISM
Post by: vh on June 11, 2013, 03:14:31 AM
surprised there hasn't been a topic on this yet.

there are millions of articles on http://www.reddit.com/r/worldnews/ (http://www.reddit.com/r/worldnews/)

A person named Edward Snowden leaked multiple slides about PRISM, a surveillance program which can monitor yahoo, google, microsoft, and other large internet companies. If any of your internet usage passes through any of their servers, the NSA can see it, even if you're outside of the US. Along with a program named Boundless Informant, it's possible to 'wiretap' nearly any computer in the world. According to Snowden it's impossible to protect against the surveillance. Even encryption is useless because the NSA have easily gotten the CA to hand over the keys silently. In addition, the NSA is building a large center in Utah to store and process all of the information, so even if you've manually encrypted email, in time, the NSA may be able to crack it. This isn't all new knowledge, instead of the selective surveillance used before, the NSA is now attempting to watch the entire internet.
In other news Edward Snowden is in Hong Kong looking for political asylum but i don't know why that's so interesting to the media.

Of course i guess reddit is somewhat of a biased source.

ABUSAID: bb caught me bmbin a US embassy. Like dis pic for justice.
RAMZAN: we gon execute some US foren wrkers tmrrw Abby?
ABUSAID: fo sho. gon lite 'm up like ramadan in mecca homez.
RAMZAN: HOLLA ATCHU NSA!

It has been for years but only just now has been spilled.

Also read about it recently on news pages, just so tired of information like that.... It's frustrating, but it seems like there's just no realistic way to do anything about it really.

There was something about it on imgur, a link to a video Obama going through his policies back when he was running for president. It was a section about security, how America has gotten too paranoid, with random wire tapping and seemingly warrant-less searches and spying, and that his policies were to stop those things from happening.

Welp.

Then he goes onto mention that you can't have 100% security without 100% privacy, which is stupid because you can't have 100% security, full stop; always someone somewhere will be doing something that compromises some sort of security no matter how big or small. Not to mention, that his wording implies that he will readily throw away some rights and needs the people need.

Whatever, most powerful man in the world, right?
Oh, also the UK agencies have been suckling off the NSA's tit to freely exchange info that the NSA have been getting using their system, so basically they's been doing the UK's dirty work too.

Some news articles about PRISM, in Danish.

USA's police moniters you on the internet (http://www.dr.dk/Nyheder/Viden/Tech/2013/06/07/Amerikansk_overvaagningsskandale_vokser.htm)

Internet giants want to disclose details about surveillance (http://www.dr.dk/Nyheder/Viden/Tech/2013/06/12/090847.htm)

How you protect yourself against American spies (http://www.dr.dk/Nyheder/Viden/Tech/2013/06/10/Saadan_beskytter_du_dig_mod_amerikanske_spioner.htm)
Contains some tips and links, including:
Anti-tracking tools:
https://www.abine.com/dntdetail.php (https://www.abine.com/dntdetail.php)
http://www.ghostery.com/ (http://www.ghostery.com/)

Encryption (mostly for logins I think):

Those are not free.

Service which makes it very hard to track you on the internet:

Other suggestions:
- Use pseudonyms and multiple ones (multiple identities)
- Use multiple browsers
- Don't share stuff you don't want to be public (wow)

News: Edward Snowden accuses NSA of hacking more than 61,000 systems, against China and Hong Kong, among other things. This is not backed up by internal documents unlike the PRISM accusations.

Source: http://www.dr.dk/Nyheder/Viden/Tech/2013/06/13/105519.htm (http://www.dr.dk/Nyheder/Viden/Tech/2013/06/13/105519.htm)

This means I may have to delete Edward Snowden's identity.

Meanwhile in Berlin

Snowden leaks documents which say NSA has been able to monitor Skype's more than 600 million users' video and audio calls. Microsoft was one of the first corporations which became a part of the monitoring system in 2007, has helped NSA access people's SkyDrive and helped them crack the encryption on Outlook, according to the documents.

"The Obama administration referred all questions for this article to John DeLong, the NSA’s director of compliance, who answered questions freely in a 90-minute interview. DeLong and members of the NSA communications staff said he could be quoted “by name and title” on some of his answers after an unspecified internal review. The Post said it would not permit the editing of quotes. Two days later, White House and NSA spokesmen said that none of DeLong’s comments could be quoted on the record and sent instead a prepared statement in his name."

NSA admits that it has illegally monitored citizens of USA.

It has monitored up to 56,000 emails of people inside USA without permission. NSA has capacity to monitor up to 75% of all internet communication in USA.

This isn't exactly PRISM-related (...probably) but still sounds like an important internet safety issue. The "Heartbleed bug" means that it's officially recommended to change password on Google, Facebook, Dropbox and many other places, because there was a hole in the OpenSSL encryption.

don't change it yet though -- if you change it before they patch the bug they'll just get your new password.

Many sites have already patched it, so it would be a good idea to change it on those sites. The lists of sites I linked to show whether sites have patched it or not.
