Title: Mercury to exit solar system by the year 2024
Post by: loonybin0 on May 29, 2013, 07:54:21 AM
I decided to play around with the solar system sim, speeding it up to see what happens. To my astonishment, it shows that Mercury will fall out of orbit, and be jettisoned by the Sun out of the solar system by about 2024! Any particular reason it shows that happening?

Thanks

Ubox2 has problems with fast orbits and high timesteps and if you put the timestep too high, the orbit doesn't get calculated correctly or something and becomes unstable.

This problem has been solved in Ubox3

The problem is explained here:

And I wouldn't say it's been solved in v3, but has been better addressed via optional adaptive time steps.
