Here's an early look at a new feature Georg and Naomi have been working on over the last few weeks.
There's still lots to do to make this behave as one might expect, but this work merges the ability to use existing textures with Georg's earlier work on procedural planets with variable ocean levels.
There's still some problems to solve... and there's still much work to do on other aspects of the simulation, but I was anxious to share this with all of you.
Naomi has recently joined the team. She's consulting on atmosphere and climate simulations and is providing insight into these very complex systems and how they can be modeled in a real time, interactive way.
Georg is our graphics programmer and keeps making everything look amazing.
Universe Sandbox 3 is a full rewrite of the original Universe Sandbox with tons of new features and improvements. We expect to release Universe Sandbox 2 as a new game for both Windows and Mac in 2013 .
-
Oh my sweet Jesus this is amazing.
Will this have a detrimental effect on performance?
-
Holy crap! :o Dead Earth here I come. 8) Dan you are the man. Unlimited coolness dude. :D ;D
-
ZOMG MY GOD!
Hm, the water level will have influence in climate?

Wow, this is great! :o
Great job on the new feature Georg and Naomi. You guys rock. :D
-
:O WOW! 8)
will there be more water effects? it looks ... kind of bland right now, and with the moon and tides and etc. There's still some problems to solve... and there's still much work to do on other aspects of the simulation, but I was anxious to share this with all of you.
applause for Georg and Naomi!! cool EPIC 8) keep it up!!
will there be settings you can change for the water levels and will it actually react to heat and will this happen to other planets and does it morph as it gets closer to black holes and and../me rants on
-
Looks awesome indeed Dan. Give my congrats to Georg and Naomi. Georg has done an amazing job, and is good to have Naomi there to brainstorm with him.
About your anxiety... your anxiety to show us is minuscule compared to ours to put our hands on it. :D

Glad you like it. The goal for planets is to be as dynamic as possible, with adjustable water, ice and vegetation that responds to changes in the simulation. Still lots of work to be done there, but it's progressing nicely, so stay tuned for more updates as we move along :)
-
A question, are you guys planing to simulate the pyroclastic clouds/shock waves that follows impacts/eruptions?
-
I am loving it. Dan, you and your team is doing great work. Please keep being amazing.
-
A question, are you guys planing to simulate the pyroclastic clouds/shock waves that follows impacts/eruptions?
We pretty much want to simulate almost anything! Tech for shockwaves is already in, although it still needs tweaking.
That said, we're constantly making decisions about how to prioritize features based on how important they are for the application as a whole. Things that create lots of scientific and / or visual value tend to go first, features with less impact come after that. Development time is a factor too.
Usually creating one feature rapidly leads to follow-up tasks that come naturally as an extension of the latest development, and then there's you guys coming up with suggestions... the universe seems to be an "all you can eat" festival of things to simulate ;)
-
hahaha Indeed Georg! You guys pick a hella of thing to simulate. "John simulates planes, Greg simulates boats, Carmack simulates bullets, Giant Army simulates EVERYTHING from EVERYWHERE!" :P
Oh by the way, I have this cool idea... hehe j/k! :D
Keep up the awesome work man! We are really really exited about this release, probably as much as you guys!
-
A question to Giant Army.
Will we be able to export textures from planets, ecspecially on the way they look. (e.g. Exporting the texture of the flooded Earth.)
-
That tuto, would be PRICELESS!
-
cute
-

Hmmm, technically possible. What use for them do you have in mind?
-
will there be lighting, volcano's, Auroras, and weather etc...... and possibly ships oh yes thanks for making shush a grate software !!? :D

I could probably use the textures in Ubox 2, or share textures with another online community of people who might want this sort of thing.
-
will there be lighting, volcano's, Auroras, and weather etc...... !!? :D
What type of lighting, city lights? Probably, because I remember seeing city lights in the Doomsday video Dan posted.
Volcanoes? Maybe visual effects, not actual rendering of one.
Auroras? Maybe. Sounds like a definite feature for the new release.
Weather? I remember seeing this question some time ago. If Dan ever decides to add weather to Ubox 3, that would be awesome. But I'm not saying this is a guaranteed feature.
-
These look amazing!
Good to see development still going strong :)

Lightning* and thunder. Yes, there will probably be those effects in the final release.
And yes, there will be sound.
-
Cool! :o
-
how about planet formation?
-
US3 will be Mac compatible correct? The screenshots look fantastic I can't wait for it to be released!
-
Yes it will be compatible with Mac.
See here:

Yes
I recommend you watch the Unite 2012 presentation video of Ubox 3. It will probably answer some of your questions.

Ok then
-
Since water vapor is a greenhouse gas, the ice should cover more of the world with low sea levels and less of it when the sea level is high.
-
Just out of curiosity, can you do this with other planets? Is a flooded Mars/Venus possible? How about fictional planets?
-
Dan,
I have a question : is that the last thing that you implement into Universe sandbox 3? or will there come more?
Sorry for my bad English :-\
-
To DAN and GEORGE
Regarding Universe Sandbox 3 -
1) How much will it Cost to update from the Steam Version of Universe Sandbox ??
Just Asking.
2) The method you use for increasing or decreasing the Water Levels - Big Question ??
Does this ONLY work on the "special" Tecture you have Created for Earth - of for any other Textures.
Please, Please - tell me it will work on Custom Textures - otherwise I will be very Sad :( :( :( :( :( :(
The Reasons why I am Asking -
1) I managed to FIND ( steal ) an Online Image for a Terraformed Mars.
Trouble is - there is too much Water on it, I need to get the Water Levels down a bit.
I do not have any access to whatever was used to Create this - and I cannot find it Anywhere On-Line.
(http://s1341.beta.photobucket.com/user/hirorder/library/Mars - Terraformed.jpg)
2) I Created some Textures for the Planets in the Omega System -
Arrakine ( Omega I ) is a Dry Planet - 50% Water.
Panthalassa / Agoora ( Omega II ) is a VERY Wet Planet - 99% Water Coverage.
Piscemund ( Omega III )is a Wet Planet - 95% Water Coverage.
All Three are going to be "evened up" - to give them ALL 70% Water Coverage Approx.
The spare Water is gonna be used to semi-Terraform the Planet Omega IV.
Here are the Files, from my PC -
1) Mars Terraformed
2) Arrakine - Omega I
3) Panthalassa / Agoora - Omega II
4) Piscemund - Omega III
DAMN - I am So Stupid - I should have done this Before - Sorry to Everyone.
-
Hm, I think than the water level thing only work with models... I'm right Giant Army?

What if you had a bumpmap
Hmmm - What is a BumpMap ????
-
basically a map in with heights. like this (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4e/Bump_map_vs_isosurface2.png) where you can see mountains and canyons
-
sounds like isometric, but w/e
-
no an isometric map is in two dimensions although it gives the appearance of three dimensions
-
but technically this screen is 2D, but if you want to go that deep in, the pixals are actually 3D but lets not get off topic.
-
but 3d objects can be represented with a 2d scope while an isometric map is 2d objects in a 2d scope
-
WOW! :o
-
Since water vapor is a greenhouse gas, the ice should cover more of the world with low sea levels and less of it when the sea level is high.
Interesting idea, but not quite right. Naomi, our climate and earth science consultant, wrote up this reply:
"Water vapor is a greenhouse gas. Ice cover (on land) and sea level have been correlated as described over the ice ages because when global temperature rises, glaciers melt leading to sea level rise. The mention of water vapor as a greenhouse gas seems like a non-sequitur... changes in greenhouse gas concentration can affect global temperature, and with water vapor there is a feedback as a warmer atmosphere can hold more water vapor. But water vapor in particular isn't worthy of extra mention when it comes to where the glacier/ocean H2O is located - that's just responding to the temperature, which is affected by all the greenhouse gases."
Just out of curiosity, can you do this with other planets? Is a flooded Mars/Venus possible? How about fictional planets?
Yes. Yes/Yes. Yes.
Example of a fictional planet with the water removed: http://universesandbox.com/forum/index.php/topic,8012.0.html (http://universesandbox.com/forum/index.php/topic,8012.0.html)
1) How much will it Cost to update from the Steam Version of Universe Sandbox ??
Universe Sandbox 3 will be a new product. Pricing and a release date have not yet been announced.
2) The method you use for increasing or decreasing the Water Levels - Big Question ??

You'll be able to load in your own custom heightmaps or generate them randomly.

We're just getting started. There's lots more to come. :)
Sorry for my bad English :-\
No need to apologize. I'm sorry I don't understand your native language. Thanks for learning English.
Will this have a detrimental effect on performance?
No.
Unlimited coolness dude.
Thanks!
A question, are you guys planing to simulate the pyroclastic clouds/shock waves that follows impacts/eruptions?
It might not be as 'simulated' as you might want it to be...
will there be lighting, volcano's, Auroras, and weather etc...... and possibly ships oh yes thanks for making shush a grate software !!? :D
All good ideas. We'll consider them. :)
US3 will be Mac compatible correct?
Yes Windows and Mac for sure... and maybe Linux too.
how about planet formation?
It's a hard problem that we're working on.
And I want to thank the other members of the team: Chris, Thomas, and Eric who are also doing amazing work.
-
Does Astrioids Burn Through The Astomopheres?

We're just getting started. There's lots more to come. :)
Oh lawd.

Riiight - Thanks for some Answers which were Important to Me.
Regarding loading in Custom Heightmaps - I use a Program called PlanetGen to Create all of my Planet Textures.
Asking - Would any of the Outputs from this be able to be used, for changing Water Levels on a Planet.
I have Modelled some 12 Planet Textures so far using this - but I am not sure if I have all of the Files used during the Creation Process.
For the Terraformed MARS - I never had a Source - just a "stolen" Image - which has a bit too much Water.
for the Terraformed VENUS - I have no useable Sources or Images.
Thanks to Dan for Anwering Questions - And I am truly Sorry to be such a Nuisance.
-
nice textures
-
good
-
Fictional planet can this be?For example, casually broke a planet texture, then the planet can not sea level rise and fall?
-
are you yoda
-
are you yoda
*whacks bong with a trout* No, he/she is Chinese. :P
@Rainbow: I do not understand your question, the second part does not make sense.
-
Can you put it in Chinese? I can kinda read it

Texture from another planet 换一个星球的纹理
-
You'll be able to add variable level oceans to other planets and moons, both real (Mars, Venus, Titan, Earth's Moon, etc...) and fictional (planets and moons
created via your own textures or our procedural planet creation system).
-
can't wait
-
Thanks Dan -
This is gonna be SOOOOOOO MEGA - AWESOME -
Just Toooo Good.
-
Again I love pics and it make us want more! We are all going to have fun with Universe Sandbox 3 beyond 100%. Also will there be a feature to mess with the atmosphere like thickness, color, and what it's made up of? Just throwing you a new idea is all. Good luck Dan. PEACE!!!
-
Also will there be a feature to mess with the atmosphere like thickness, color, and what it's made up of?
We're still working on the specifics of adjustable atmospheric properties (or I should say that Naomi is), but yes... this is a feature I'm really excited about.
-
Is there an estimated month of release, Dan?
-
No.

the longer the wait, the greater the program
i think i'll have to turn that into a slogan soon

I agree. Although I do wish it was an open beta.
-
Is there a chance of Universe Sandbox 3 being added to the Early Access part of Steam?
-
Is there a chance of Universe Sandbox 3 being added to the Early Access part of Steam?
I wondering about that myself.
-
Is there a chance of Universe Sandbox 3 being added to the Early Access part of Steam?
Good question... it's something we've considered ourselves. That said... in its current state it's just not ready yet. It's still too early.

cool, Im guessing Steam Early Access is the best option for the beta :) Cant wait
-
When i see this screenshot, :o :o :o ,im very happy of this new feature. You dan are the BEST.
-
His team also helped him, which is called the Giant Army. (I think)
-
Is there any new screenshots?
-
Is it more developed now that it could have an early access release?, or are there still some things that need to be completed first?
-
We're still working on it...
Progress is slow, but awesome. We're starting to tone down the feature creep and focus on fixing bugs and polishing the experience we've created.
Our latest victory:
Naomi, our climate scientist, just got the code working to do a simplistic simulation of seasons on the Earth... where by removing the 23 degree tilt of the Earth relative to its orbital plane around the Sun, seasons go away.

I thought they're basically done, but I heard they're just polishing it and fixing bugs, right?
-
These oceans DO look better and more realistic. How come its just bleu now?
-
*Gordon becomes a necro-threader
but seriosuly, why are the ocans just blue? it looks better when it has different hues.
-
CPU power limits?
-
hmmph, maybe
