It's has been recently announced that Andromeda is 5 times larger than previously thought, making it around 1 million light years across.
You may now be thinking that we are a very small sister to Andromeda. :'(
Well, you shouldn't. ;)
Even though Andromeda is MUCH larger than thought, the Milky Way is 15 times larger.
100,000 lyrs x 15= 1,500,000 lys.
That means that we are 0.5 times larger than Andromeda! :o
So now we should not think of Andromeda as our larger sister, but more like our smaller twin. :D

This would be really cool if it was true.
Do you have a source for this information?
Wikipedia says that:
"the diameter of M31 at the widest point is estimated to be 141 ± 3 kly." (which is 141000 light years)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andromeda_Galaxy
-
Never though that!
-
If we are .5 times larger than Andromeda we are only half its size. :P

Here is where you can find the information of Andromeda:

Milky Way:

I believe that in the new version, you should add this.

Errr, we are .5 Times LARGER than andromeda.
We are 500,000 light years larger.
But we are both very equal.
-
Oh so our size = andromeda plus andromeda times .5? I'm confuzzled... :-[
-
Also. it has a diameter of 145000 ly.

Hbmp is right. .5 x A
A being Andromeda, is 1/2 A, or to put into perspective
.5 x 10 = 5
Oh so our size = andromeda plus andromeda times .5? I'm confuzzled... :-[
Yes, that's what he means.
M x A = 1.5 x A
lol :P ;D I'm in Algebra I

The sad thing is I'm entering Geometry... :( scawy lol :P

It's easy. It's simple variables.
Variable - An imaginary number, in which represents a value that could be [almost] any number.
.5 is just half (you probably know that) :P
PRE-ALGEBRA LESSON lol :P
5n -4 = 6+4
You have to do both, remeber, EQUALS means it is equal!
So to solve, start wih the 5
5n = n/5
So, divide by five. Remember, your goal is to equalize everything to 1 (mult. and div.) or 0 (add and sub.), so you have the answer to n.
So, 5 divided by 5 is 1.
So=
n - 4 = 6+4
So now you have to do the same on the other side, but first you need to solve it to one number. 6+4 is 10, divided by five:
10/5 = 2
So=
n-4 = 2
Now add 4 to equalize the 4, a minus just means you are adding the opposite:
n = 4+2
So if 5n - 4 = 6+4, then n = 6
EDIT: Sorry, I can't revise this, I always had trouble wiht this, you have to work backwards from PEM/DA/S, as to solve a problem you work backwards, so when you do it you go forward. So the minus 4 goes first, then the multiply by 5 goes last.

I'm going to grade 7........your mostly 10 years old when you go to fifth grade.
I'm the only person in my class that knows this much about the universe.

If your school is like mine you'll like the last part of 8th grade science it's about the universe. It's also really interesting to understand the patterns of chemistry during the 2/4 of 8th grade. Good times.... :D

Same here. Though, I have excellerated reading, language, and am in Algebra I. I get to get a highschool credit in 7th grade! :) if i pass. lol :P

In Sandbox 2 will change its diameter to 141000 ly.
-
Isn't it just the halo that has that size? I guess there isn't 1,5 million ly from one side to another on the galactic disc.
-
Oh so our size = andromeda plus andromeda times .5? I'm confuzzled... :-[
Here's what I mean.
Lets say you were to take both the milky way and the andromeda galaxy and put then next to each other to compare their size. If you wanted to see how many andromedas it would take to cover our galaxy's disk, you would one and a half andromedas in order to cover our galaxy entirely.
-
So it's one and a half
times
larger
Andromeda TIMES 1.5 is Milky Way
1.5a=m
-
Exactly! :D
-
Not 0.5 ;)
-
I forgot to say that it's actually the HALO that makes us 1.5 million light years across. It's not the full dic. Same thing with andromeda, I'm just talking about it's halo.
-
So in the end. We are actually bigger than we thought!
Imagine the collision now.
2 Decently sized Galaxies colliding.
