Title: hidden galaxy next to the milky way
Post by: atommo999 on August 15, 2009, 04:51:01 AM
i have recently found information on a galaxy hidden behing our galaxy roughly 300,000 lightyears from us and sources show that 300 million years ago it swept through our own galaxy just 16.000 lightyears from the galactic centre- closer than earth disturbing the milky way's outskirts as it went. i thought everyone might be interested in this so heres the link for the whole thing:

maybe someone could have a go at making a simulation of this event?

Maybe there is a biological catastrophe during that time. Would someone look that up.

Collisions between galaxies aren't so dangerous. A collision between 2 stars is really improbable because a galaxy is very very low dense.

Star collisions are rare in the case that the space between them is so great.

But stars passing by each other could still cause lots of comets to get new orbits or even rip the planets out of their orbits...
That would be dangerous. :o

That's what I meant. Rogue comets, asteroids, etc. Everyone knows there is a layer in the galaxy full of rocks. This is why once every I think 65 million years the planet is bombed with asteroids.(the solar system passed through the layer)

Why are we so worried about Andromeda?

There is two small galaxies colliding in the Milky Way

Link to a specific time in a YouTube video:
Add #=2m30s to the end of a YouTube clip to link directly to that point.

The collision of the two smaller galaxies makes me wonder, would they warp our galaxies shape after the collision?
Look at Andromeda. It's sattelite M32 collided with the galaxy 280 million years ago, and that warped it's spiral shape into a ring.
Can that happen to us? Or has it already happened, since the light from the two galaxies will take a while to reach us?

I know about the light thing but it's  confusing to think if we are looking into the past or the future. I think that only applies with distant objects. But then if it was heading towards us it is less than he speed of light then it hasn't happened yet.

At new map for MW: I saw a galaxy just behind the MW. I said: "whats that galaxy?", and Arata said "possibly the hidden galaxy."
