Our current plans for the next release of Universe Sandbox:
- The next version of Universe Sandbox will be version 2.
- The expected release date is early 2010. (turns out rewriting the entire interface takes a long time)
- It will be easier to learn and use.

mid December 2009
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! :'(
-
December! =[ I am sad!
I can't wait though!
-
I'll release an unfinished, buggy, undocumented alpha version no later than October 1, 2009.
This date has been delayed. See this post for more info:

still... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
-
I'll accept a buggy version! :D
-
Aw. Oh well it's still two months away! (October 14 is my birthdate)
-
Dan. NET 4 will release in early 2010.
-
Great, the longer we wait, the better it is, and the alpha-thing is always good for the impatient... :)
And the alpha thing solves the problem. :)

does current version and upcoming version has option to disable screen saver?

I've added code to the upcoming version that prevents the Windows screen saver from activating if Universe Sandbox is the focused window. But the current version doesn't automatically disable the screen saver.
In summary...
Current version: No
Upcoming version: Yes
Is this what you mean?
And you're from India. Awesome. Welcome. :)
-
Dan, is it possible to make US not draw anything you are not looking at? Specifically Trails, Hill spheres.
Or maybe not draw if you are zoomed out too far to see the hill sphere. Though not sure how this currently works.
Just performance drops like a rock when I turn hill spheres on.
-
thanks for considering screen saver disabling option in upcoming version. actually I was explaining something to my son and the screen saver was interupting in between. this will be a nice inclusion. And, from your "Awasome" response I suppose that you dont interact with lot many indians on this forum. :D

No! that is not good.

No! that is not good.
The alpha version will be accessible via a link that I share in the forums. This version will be separately installed and run from the main public release (the version you have installed now). Universe Sandbox won't automatically upgrade until the final release in December.
-
i don't care waiting :D
how longer the wait, how better the update
-
We can all think of it as Dan's Xmas (Holiday) Present to us.

the best gifd for a US sandbox fan ever :D

Hey Dan, How will the new UI work? Will it be Rick-Click like the current?
Will it be on the screen?
If so is it possible to remove the UI temporarily?
-
Hey Dan, How will the new UI work? Will it be Rick-Click like the current?
It's going to be quite different.
New in version 2 is the concept of selection (which is now different from the object the camera is pointed at).
And the right click screen is gone, everything can be done with the left mouse button.
If so is it possible to remove the UI temporarily?
Yes. At the moment I've got the Tab key hooked up to toggle the UI, although I plan to experiment with the UI sliding out of the way when not being used.

still... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!? :'(
*does stupid* and i what if you would release it now?
*thinks of buggy version* (make's planet, PC crashes)

*does stupid*
???
-
Just think as the Buggy version more of a Beta testing.
Can help Dan iron out the bugs.

So in Sandbox 2 will [you] fix the disappearance of a particle. except galaxies. everytime you save and load. [?]

Maybe. I'm not sure if I'm going to have the time necessary to improve the quality of saves by the December deadline. Be assured that this is something I want to fix early next year at the latest and may be part of a full state save feature (which may allow for an undo feature).
-
can't wait! but don't believe that I only read this now! :(
-
I really want an option to enable/disable the particles from disappearing in a collision.
-
A graph that you can put time on the x axis, and a choice of things on the y.
Like accelereation, velocity, sma, eccentrity, orbital period. Amd then click the bodies you want, or a button to select all.
-
I would like you to implement:
Black Hole Collision Wave:
When Black Holes collide, they cause gravity waves to flow outward.
These waves can distort orbits, shapes of objects, the density of objects, or the way light travels!
-
Star loss of galaxies. because the nearest star on a galaxy will flung because it is too fast (over 1000 times)
We will be deimplemented that one in the times of a release.
-
Monmarfori, I think the reason why the stars closest to the core is being flung out is because the computer isn't fast enough to calculate the orbit. The only way to prevent it is to slow down the timestep of the simulation. :)
-
Although this does happen in reality:
http://www.universetoday.com/2005/02/08/this-star-is-leaving-our-galaxy/
In Universe Sandbox it's usually because the time step is too high. :)
-

Explain this more please. Are you talking about how they fade out? Or when they crash into a body?
-
I think that he meant a tool that allow particles to pass through bodies without disappearing as they do now. (by the way I'm not him :))
-

I am pretty sure I know. I think what Chaotic Cow means is that when an object crashes into another, it starts to fade away until it doesn't exist anymore. I think he wants it so it doesn't go away. I can relate, because I have always wanted that.
-
What about custom collisions? ellipticalspiral collision or else.
-
it would be cool if you could almost make a dent in the planet if it collides and sometimes merge. it would also be nice if when you made a planet explode, it turned into rocks instead of smaller planets :)
-

What Neutron said.
I don't want collision debris to go away. I Like it because sometimes it makes rings but then it goes away.
-
I agree with Chaotic Cow, it would be very nice if you could en-/disable the disappearing of particles from collisions. :)
-
My gravity wave idea, is perfect. Much like an approved theory.
-
Can you add climet's,relistic planet collisions ,planets bake when to close to star, black holes that acually streatch and eat stars and a function that lets you create the planets image?
those are some ideas for future updates that i would enjoy to have. :)
-
Planets bake when near stars? That wouldn't work because it would mean mercury would be destroyed immediately!
-
Inside Mercury's orbit.

Is Universe Sandbox 2 going to be multi-threaded AKA. support for more than 1 core in the CPU?
-
Is Universe Sandbox 2 going to be multi-threaded AKA. support for more than 1 core in the CPU?
While there is some light multi-threading in the current release (loading textures, saving screenshots), the simulation will not have full multi-core support until the release of Microsoft .NET 4.
We are expecting to release Universe Sandbox v2 before the release of .NET 4. Multi-core support will likely be added within a few months of .NET 4's release.

How about this built in universe??
Beginning Of The Universe:
Basically, it starts as a big bang and then becomes a universe.
-
You need (a) an autosave the overwrites, and (b) an overwrite save feature.
-
End of the Universe? lol.
-
Okay, i've been very patient, i cant wait for the new version! But it's 2010!
Dan,
Can you make a more specific date, since we are in early 2010! I would greatly appreaciat this couse nothing has been posted on this thread for over 3 weeks now!
PLEASE ANSWER!!!!!!!!!
;D
-
Yeah, when is early 2010. By the way, I nearly typed 2012 right now.
-
The point by early 2010 was not to set a specific date, because it's hard to know exactly when you're finished. Last time he set a specific date, he wasn't sure, and look how many professional games that are released after the original release dates. :)
-
Yeah I know that. But Scribblenauts came out on time.
-
Wow! So many things to come out in 2010!!!!
Gaudians of gahoole movie, Gran Turismo 5, ModNation Racers, US2!!!
-
Yeah because its a starting of a new decade lol. :P
-
Thats true. I just would've thought he'd be so close to finishing by now that he would be able to pinpoint a more specific time slot! :D
-
I don't want to be any more specific than early 2010 because I don't want to make a promise I can't keep.
-
What is making you delayed, Dan?
-
Oh okay, i think we can all respect that Dan! I'll be patient! :D
And yeah, what is the delay exactly? (Just wondering!) ;D
-
Can you estimate the month when it will be released?
-
Can you estimate the month when it will be released?
Not yet, sorry.
-
A good feature for Universe Sandbox 2 would be and option to make a star go supernova and see it's affect on orbiting bodies. Also when stars collide they should go supernova.
-
another cool feature would be a collision mode where planets break apart.
-
hmmmm early 2010, its march first, ALRIGHT ;D best release yet soon to come! :)
-
Another interesting feature to include is a system to determine the surface temperature and black body temp. You could even use this to determine what "type" of planet it is. (Such as a greenhouse, garden, or ice world)
-

That could be good idea, but the textures cannot change.
-
Any reason why not? (I'm not really familiar with programming, so I'm just throwing out ideas) Or if the textures can't change, maybe a way to alter the color slightly? For example a world that falls in the range of garden world would appear slightly more green.
-
Yeah, that is possible, but you have override the colors to change a green world into a black one.
-
...but the textures cannot change.
Anything is possible, it's all about how long it might take to implement.
(It is true that it's not currently easy to change the texture of a body.)
Another interesting feature to include is a system to determine the surface temperature and black body temp.
Yes. This is something we're very interested in implementing, but it won't be in the initial release of v2 as that feature set has been locked.
