Is that gravitational distortion? cool.Yes. It's an early pass at this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravitational_lens (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravitational_lens)
Also, whats with the money icon? or is that just for those who haven't bought it yet? That's funny... :) The icons are totally arbitrary and temporary. The dollar sign actually shows the options. There's nothing to read into the screenshot from the icons.

Just ignore all UI for now. We're only trying different layouts and nothing you see is final.
All icons and fonts are placeholders right now.
Um hey, I just noticed the 'use squid' text overlaying the FPS bar, what's that?

This is a first look at one of the many graphical improvements in the the major update due out later this year for both Windows and Mac. This is a full rewrite of Universe Sandbox in a new 3D engine.
This will be a free update to everyone who has ever purchased Universe Sandbox through this website or on Steam.
The controls and icons are all temporary and will change dramatically in the next few months.
More updates coming in a few weeks...
Thanks again to all the hard work of Chris & Georg at IonStar in Solingen, Germany. They're helping make all this possible.

A thought, would the simulations we have be compatible with Universe Sandbox 3 or will we have to start from scratch, or at least rebuild from scratch?

We intend to support old system formats.
However, we're also aiming to improve UniverseSandbox in such a way that it will be easier and more fun to create systems in the application instead of having to edit XML manually.
@Kepler: English please will ya? Although that post seems to be aimed at the guys over at IonStar and I get the gist of it anyway.
Now I get what the 'insert squid' refers to, it's their SDK GUI, program, not exactly sure what it's suppoused to be.

Only concern is how advanced the new engine will be. What if I can't play it anymore? Will I be able to use the old version?
The engine we're using, http://unity3d.com/ (http://unity3d.com/).That answered my question. :-*

If you add the ability to punch in any date (4,000 b.c. to 4,000 a.d. for example) in order to get the applicable solar system ephemeris as a starting point in a simulation verus the current static starting date of 2008 blah blah and I will pay $50 for the update to US3.
I'm really excited about the graphical possibilities since the switch to Unity too. Happy coding.
The interface will be new and completely different?
Dan can you show a planet on Universe sandbox 3 ???
ALL HAIL DAN AND HIS TEAM OF DEVELOPERS
will roche limit functionality ... actually work in US3 and sync along with the new collision and possibly new explosion system?
Dan what time you think US3 will come out 2012 Q2, 2012 Q3 or 2012 Q4 :)

That's funny... :) The icons are totally arbitrary and temporary. The dollar sign actually shows the options. There's nothing to read into the screenshot from the icons.Don't believe a word of it! Clicking the money sign will drain your bank accounts! And that "use squid" over the framerate at the bottom? That's referring to a new type of trojan virus!

On a slightly more serious note, pretty!

This specific feature would be #1 on my list... a great boon for realistic writing if I can say for certainty what the sky looks like on a given night.

That would take forever for a gravity simulator to calculate, especially because the errors from not using an absurdly small time step would add up over 4000 years of simulation.
I believe there are other "desktop planetarium" programs that are better suited to ephemerides than Universe Sandbox.

Actually I was wondering if this were so... I know of existing programs (and have used them in the past) that do this, but not for custom systems. If you add the ability to punch in any date (4,000 b.c. to 4,000 a.d. for example) in order to get the applicable solar system ephemeris as a starting point in a simulation verus the current static starting date of 2008 blah blah and I will pay $50 for the update to US3.

I'll post another screenshot in the next few days. :)

Nice humor you two :P
Release is sometime this year, thats all Dan knows. I'm hoping for a summer release sometime myself.
I don't joke about ponies. :)(http://www.marsenis.eu/rage/Cereal%20Guy%20Spitting.png)

/me hides
I hope you aren't joking about the shooting laser beams part, that'd be awesome :P (like kind of like light pulse but in a line or something). It would be.
