That Astroempires? Also lol. :) I think I see the parachute of someone who bailed out in the background of the third pic, if that IS a parachute.

No, this is Kerbal Space Program

and also in the 3rd picture, the explosion in the foreground is the command module. The parachute in the back...malfuctioned :)

yes fiah, the demo versions, and this will be free. the future versions will cost money althoguh you can preorder for $7 and get the full version.

I'm having trouble even getting INTO orbit. Possibly because I'm trying to figure out how to build one well and it's taking time to get used to the control scheme. Can't seem to make my rocket not spin back towards the ground.

Definetly fun though. Looking at the wiki and forum there for some ship building tips and info.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Ouch, talk about being lost in space, or rather, marooned in space without fuel.

Although I haven't been playing for a few days, any tips on getting the rocket to fly straight? I can't seem to get out of the atmosphere. If the controls were reconfigurable, that would be helpful.

The thing is that my rocket keeps spinning or getting pointed towards the ground and I can't pull the damn nose up. It's not a fuel problem, it's a control problem.

right before you take off helps. instead of after

and also, put most of your sas devices at the bottom stages, so you can dispose of them early.

Yeah, pressing T and having the SAS module does the trick. Tried to add another stage to it and forgot to add more booster rockets, however ditching the first stage worked. Until I tried to ditch the second stage when the decoupler somehow failed and caused the rocket to spin on the end of the parachute. The stage eventually broke off, but so did the parachute, heh. I'll work on adding boosters later and investigate the faliure point between the last stage and the command module.

Haven't achieved full orbit yet, but doing pretty good  sub-orbital flights, Mercury program style.

And yes, I've generally done safe landings unless something goes horribly wrong, like the above.

Also, I think I read somewhere on the wiki or about addons about the heat shield, but I haven't seen any of the atmospheric heating that happens on re-entry, just wondering. I did orient the heat shield as it entered the atmosphere though just in case.

KSO, or the Kerbil space observatory. Launched with only 4 engines and two stages, this telescope cost a fraction of what the NDSP.

Top speed was 9 m/s

achieved orbit around Kerbol

the telescope had to be moved from planetary orbit to avoid glare from the planet and sun.

Yeah I'm glad for the crew system because then I can stock up every pod instead of the game just filling the base pod.

been focusing on Eve recently, easier to get to as it's inside Kerbin's orbit, so it moves faster and gives more windows, imo. first I got a Voyager-like probe in orbit, but it's very elliptical and the sensors aren't able to collect any data. Second, I got a Kerbal to walk on Eve. Unfortunately, Jebediah's not coming back home.
Oh well, there's more where he came from.

stage 2: the brown part is 4 liquid engines
stage 3: brown + 3 white, another 4 liquid engines
stage 4: white, single liquid engine
payload: everything above that, contains space station, habitation module, solar panels, nosecone, parachutes, etc.

It's for the return trip, obviously.

Here is my first ship, it uses the skipper engine and while the thing CAN make it to orbit, there is barely any fuel for going anywhere and I have to use the maneuvering jets often to get the ship back to the ground.
Title: Re: Kerbal Space Program
Post by: matty406 on June 26, 2013, 01:56:48 PM
Trials for a cruiser like ship that can be parked in kerbin orbit, stocked up with fuel and lander craft, then sent off to different planets. Then, brought back into orbit and restocked.
Powered by two 400 thrust nuclear engines from the Lack Luster Labs (http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/showthread.php/24906-LLL-Lack-Luster-Labs-0-09-9) pack, and built using a cockpit and body parts from the Aerospace mod pack (http://kerbalspaceport.com/0-20-2-b9-aerospace-pack-r3-1/). Currently though it's lacking in fuel, the structure parts that make up the body come with integrated fuel tanks but it might not be enough for long trips.

Messing around with a flying wing rocket. Somehow the rocket decouplers failed to attatch to the rockets themselves (or I failed to connect them to the rockets) and not sure why the wing is doing that, lol :P

I did get the station core up (messed up the orbit while preparing to do a deorbital burn and had to restart, but meh, I wanted to add a battery to the unmanned craft I was using anyway) but I don't know how I'm supposed to set up the save. Do I have to make a new save iteration or like what?

I actually tried to send up a core with a module in between and another core on the other end, but I couldn't fix the wobbling.

Title: Re: Kerbal Space Program
Post by: smjjames on July 04, 2013, 02:02:02 PM
I have the save file under my own name as smjjames (just because), but I guess I can just copy it and rename it.

Not sure if not having the kerbal engineer would cause any problems because a part would be missing. The station node I put in orbit doesn't have it, but the ships do.

This is my first working VTOL plane. You'll need the B9 Aerospace pack.
Place this file in '\Steam\SteamApps\common\Kerbal Space Program\saves\[your save file name]\Ships\SPH'
Instructions are included on the plane.

Actually don't bother with the main engines, you'll have a better flying experience with the VTOLS in horizontal mode.

Is your Kerbal a Steam installation?  If so try to check the game cache first, if that fails just delete the folders inside the Kerbal Space Program folder and have Steam check the files again, it will replace the ones you deleted and should be a "fresh" install.  This always fixes my game issues with Kerbal after an update.

<osmotischen2>design a craft that can send one of those orange fuel tanks into orbit along with rcs/sas/drone module for docking
To refuel in orbit?

yeah i was going to dock it to this 'core' piece and then send it off on an intersteller journey with a nuclear engine or something. possibly i might dock a lander and try to visit and return from eve

craft able to get an orange fuel tank into an orbit around 80,000 meters. It has a set of tinny fuel taks that supplement the first stage, and these need to be jettisoned as soon at they empty.

suck it gravity i've figured it out.

launch vehicle: (http://i.imgur.com/TW6qIst.jpg)
final configuration: (http://i.imgur.com/OQSrvxZ.png)

the engines in the final stage can drain from either the orange or the grey tanks, so depending on how much fuel you need to dock, you might have extra fuel, or end up with a slightly lower amount. in this image, i have an 80x114 orbit with low inclination and i have around 10% of excess fuel left before i start draining the orange.

the final stage isn't separable but i'm thinking now it would be a good idea

__________________________________________

launching sector 1 of a space station to which the orange fuel tanks will be attached.
the rest of the rocket is the same except i've replaced the jumbo-64 with this.
i have less fuel to work with now, but it weighs a 10th of the last lift so it should be pretty doable

upon completion of the construction (to be done in orbit), the craft should have around 13,400 delta v, or if carrying a 150 ton payload it will have 6800 delta v, enough to reach eeloo, drop the cargo, and return.

surface to air missile thing i made.
you need to put the lander legs down before launching or you will end up with quite a few popped tires

finish launching: http://i.imgur.com/ZeK6AIL.png (http://i.imgur.com/ZeK6AIL.png)

you can actually switch to each of the rockets in order to guide it exactly to the target since i've attached a drone core to each

Could you post the craft file for that and the launch platform? Not trying to copy your thing (except maybe the chassis, only so many ways to do a large chassis like that), just wanted to see how you set it up as I want to get a rover onto Duna and Mun (yes I know, completely different conditions) and I'm not sure how I should go about the whole disconnection from the rockets and then landing.
Title: Re: Kerbal Space Program
Post by: vh on August 09, 2013, 12:18:15 PM
ha i don't care whether you copy everything or anything or nothing

mods used: ubioweld, mechjeb

how i got the rover to duna

1. launch the rover (kerbal rover23.craft) into a 75x75 orbit. manual launch is reccomended because mechjeb is a bit rough with the controls and a column or two sometimes breaks. four of the tanks will be drained of fuel next, and should be dropped. when in orbit, the rest of the tanks can be dropped (press space two more times). open panels with '1'

2. launch the tug (thrusters.craft) into a 75x75 orbit. when halfway into the gravity turn, 8 of the mainsails should be dropped. to do this, you must carefully align the craft with the prograde vector and throttle down a bit before staging. after getting into orbit, you should use the four remaining mainsails to rendevouz with the rover. dispose of the 4 mainsails and dock with the rover using the nerva and rcs

3. repeat step two with another tug. dock on the other port

4. now you have two nervas docked to the rover. from this point on, don't use mechjeb as the craft is too unstable to fly with mechjeb. also keep in mind that the nervas are facing retrograde, so you need to thrust opposite on the navball. expand your orbit until it is larger than the mun. this is because the nervas are too weak to escape from kerbin directly. wait until duna is in position, then intercept it and lower into a 50x50 duna orbit with low inclination.

5. dispose of the two nerva engines, which should be just about empty, then, arrange your parachute staging so they come out two at a time at first, then gradually more. an example would be 2, 2, 4, 8 (16 parachutes total). this is so they won't break the craft when deploying. close panels so they won't break off during landing. now wait until you are approaching one of the marinas on duna from the west. thrust retrograde with the engines under the rover just enough to deorbit into the marina. turn off engines once this has been achieved. at 25km, use the remaining fuel to reduce horizontal/vertical velocity to under 100m/s. keep thrusting gently to keep vertical velocity under 200 m/s until you are 2 kilometers above ground level.

6. at 2kms, dispose of the engines via decouplers and launch the first stage of parachutes. at 500m, once the first parachutes have opened, you can start spamming the rest. touchdown should be achieved at around 12m/s. open panels. drive.

of course if you just wanted to get the rover to the moon i wouldn't have bothered with a seperate thruster rocket. if it was a moon mission i would've removed the engines on the rover and used a slightly larger rover launcher to directly land on the moon and act like a crane.

tips for when fuel lines cause one engine to have more fuel than another

1. if you have fuel lines in a loop, don't make loops

2. don't have one tank of fuel distributing to two

3. remove the fuel lines and redo them. i had perfect symmetry and put on some fuel lines. they didn't work properly. i removed them and put them on in the exact same way, and they worked perfectly

here's a chart: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AqXNpALRcpv9dEhoS2t4MHNpZDN1b2NUUkxzeE1qWGc#gid=1

to explain, the five lines are different configurations of a modular interplanetary tug i've constructed. the x-axis is the weight of the object the tug pushes, and the y-axis is the delta-v

1p, 2p, and 3p are just a single tug, two attached tugs, and three attached tugs firing the engines all at the same time. burn time is about 30 minutes

2s and 3s are when each attached tug is fired until out of fuel, then undocked before the next one is fired. although it offers a large delta-v boost for small objects, burn time is 1 hour and 1.5 hours respectively

each tug weighs 185 tons

@matty they said interiors are very time consuming and almost as time consuming as the parts themselves IIRC so they will be in a later update.

also we already have a KSP topic

Yes, i know that there's already a KSP thread, but it was buried, also, this update is just too awesome  8)

I don't think you understand, there have never ever been interiors for the Mk3 cockpit since it was first added.

i made a new rocket

the Model 595 reaches over 5 km/s and 90 km in under 50s. i left out the zeros because that makes it less awkward. not that the name isn't already pretty awkward but it doesn't matter to me at this point because steal dreams don't melt fuel beams. i also needed a heat shield to stop it from exploding on the way up

in the vab

stage one:
12000 kN (equivalent to 60 of your standard SRBs) powered by the mammoth engine and 8 ks-25 vector engines
burn time is 24 seconds, and brings you from 0 to 1.5 km/s and 16 km
(http://i.imgur.com/clc2Qdn.png)

stage two
2460 kN (equivalent to 12 standard SRBs) powered by 1 mainsail and 8 radial thud engines
burn time is 15 seconds, brings you up to 2.8 km/s and 48 km
(http://i.imgur.com/hyOVprT.png)

stage three
500 kN (2.5 SRBs) powered by 50+ seperatrons which collectively weigh just over 4 tons
burn time is 9 seconds, brings you up to 5.1 km/s and 90 km

Introducing Sadako-chan and Miwako-chan.

Sadako-chan is a high speed interceptor
(http://i.imgur.com/JCOIqkz.png)
She studies high altitude spying at Sutanforado University and shoots down enemy aircraft in her free time.
She has a top speed is 1300 m/s at sea level and can do a 180 in about 3 seconds while moving at this speed. If you point her straight up, she'll giggle at you and send you 120km ASL.

Miwako-chan is a hyper-manuverable interceptor
(http://i.imgur.com/V9HxMyF.jpg)
She studies interpretive dance for airplanes at Havarudo University and toggles her afterburners to the beat of whatever music she listens to her free time.
She has a top speed of about 700 m/s with afterburners, but that's not why you blush whenever you see her. It's because Miwako turns on a dime without stalling, hovers in midair, and dodges missiles like a fly dodging an elephant.
