"Here's a fun fact: if our sun went supernova tonight - i.e., while we're on the opposite side of the world - it would appear to be brilliant daylight outside. If it was a full moon, we'd actually burn to death in the moonlight. All while the other side of the planet boiled into space at over a hundred metres of rock per second. It would be, by all accounts, a rough night."

But it's impossible for the sun to go supernova because it's too small.

thats why when aliens take over the world, we divurt massif amount af hydrogun to make der sun supahnovah!

...Or you could just make a few of these.

nawt as impressiff
and nawt as painful
i imagine the atmosphere would be vaporized and you would simultanously burn/implode
if you were on the side with the supernove, you would be vaporized and also crushed by the shockwave
or maybe the shockwave causes the earth to crack apart and then you'd suffocate/implode
:)

To do that, they would have to ram a Large sun many times the mass of the sun! Our sun will die by becoming a sub giant (sterilizing the Earth), and srinking in cycles, before finally shrinking permidently as it slowly dies out (but hopefully the solar wind stuff pushed out by the sun when it iw a sub-giant will make a small nebula for us to look at!)

dunno, would it be feasible to trigger a supernova by causing the fusion to stall. A black hole would cause the layers to collapse on each other and create a supernova :)

Super novas turn stars into pulsars or white dwarves, Hyper nova's are the ones that make neutron stars and black holes ;D

No, i meant using a blackhole to cause a supernova.
