I have that. I made a city that is huge, has a high tech industrial area, skyscraper apartments, huge malls, small skyscrapers for office development, etc. As you can see I have played this game for a long time. At first its really hard to figure out. But after a while you can become a genius. The only major thing I haven't acquired yet is the space station. About everything else I've been able to build. If you need any advice you can just ask. I usually do something simple at first then accumulate money. Then I make a huge risky development, and if that succeeds then I turn out with a full map and then upgrade from there. Don't try to start out with high density housing until almost all of the map is filled in. If you do they will most likely go unoccupied within a few years since the land value is too low.

The only problem I really have with development is keeping down pollution. But what I usually do (only possible after connecting about three successful dirty industry cities) is raise taxes on dirty industry to an unacceptable rate and lower taxes on both manufacturing and high tech (with high tech the lowest) and then build a high density plot of industry land and wait for it to fill out. Be sure to connect it with water! And a good industry will develop. After the demand for high tech has increased, delete some of the manufacturing buildings and wait a few years. You can now place houses and commerce next to it without them getting to unhappy :D.

I've also played SimCity alot! :D
Now it doesn't work on my normal computer anymore, but I can play it on my laptop... Which now is my "SimCity 4-computer". :P
I only play that on it... I love it. And yes, I also use your industry strategy,hbmp88. :) I both have the Deluxe Edition and Rush Hour. I like terraforming my own regions... In the start at least. :P But connecting cities and giving them my own name is also funny.

When it worked on my desktop I built a single city (not a region) that had more than 1 million inhabitants. That's my record.

... I love it. And yes, I also use your industry strategy,hbmp88. :)

So how did it turn out? I can get huge map filling cities that way, and virtually no pollution.
Title: Re: Simcity 4
Post by: Bla on June 03, 2009, 10:11:45 PM
I often get problems with the traffic pollution. Traffic is my weak point. Usually I make rails, then bus stops and metro, but it doesn't help much. In the end I need to upgrade the boulevards to highways, and sometimes completely change my road structure, but I got a new tactic some time ago when I looked at the real maps of my own city:

If you build like this:

=============== Big road (boulevard/highway)
   |      |      |      |      |
 ..|..  ..|..  ..|..  ..|..  ..|.. (dots = small roads)
   |      |      |      |      |   (lines = normal roads)
 ..|..  ..|..  ..|..  ..|..  ..|..

Then the main stream of traffic doesn't use the small roads to get through the city, but instead the highways and boulevards. :)
It's very effective, but hard to change if you build tall buildings so the small roads get too much traffic.
Title: Re: Simcity 4
Post by: monmarfori on June 03, 2009, 10:40:40 PM
my problem is the high traffic.
Title: Re: Simcity 4
Post by: hbmp88 on June 04, 2009, 08:41:32 PM
So you use freeways, underground subways, and airports for traffic between cities. Check to see where the traffic comes from and where it goes. If it comes from another city make an airport in a lot of cities or connect all of them with freeways. If that is too much money then connect them all with subways or E-trains
Title: Re: Simcity 4
Post by: hbmp88 on June 04, 2009, 08:43:42 PM
You know that boulevards can connect directly into freeways right?
Title: Re: Simcity 4
Post by: Bla on June 05, 2009, 12:05:12 AM
Of course. :P
I love making a city where the boulevards change into highways and they turn around the buildings. It looks so beautiful. And then with ramps all over the place, roads under it, and then make them change to ground level so the roads can go over them. :)

You can use cheat engine to add more money like 3 billion and some. never need to cheat weaknesspays.
Example: Money: 154,442 then search for 154442. and Build somthing you want. then your money is 75,243
search for 75243. click then enter any number. like 1 billion ;D

Cheat engine can be downloaded here: http://www.cheatengine.org

A glitch is found when you press the Windows button (on your left part on your keyboard near the space bar) then if you click the simcity 4 icon on your taskbar. then some objects would look like squares.

Not all keyboards are the same, and by the way that was a really random comment to what I wrote above. Can you try to be more reasonable on where you post? We can't read your mind so try to be more clear. I really don't know why I'd care if you found a glitch on your computer. All I asked for is an alternative way to post my city since it is over 2050 KB.

Title: Re: Simcity 4

A lag is a cause of slowing down a computer. or a hang?
Title: Re: Simcity 4
Post by: monmarfori on July 21, 2009, 01:21:01 AM
Really a hang is a freezing of a software like Simcity 4 or the computer.
Title: Re: Simcity 4
Post by: Bla on July 21, 2009, 03:28:18 AM
By hang he just means it will run slow, freeze or crash I think. And that it often happens because the computer needs more RAM.
But perhaps we should discuss SimCity some more instead. :)

Eeehhh... What are your largest cities called? How many inhabitants do they have? ;D
My record is "Ul Torv" with about 1.3 million inhabitants, but it was in 2005 where I later lost my data... Which has happened twice. But now it's running on my laptop where Noxium is the largest city, with a little more than 70,000 inhabitants. :P

Hopefully the region, though I also find that highly unlikely, a billion is 1,000 million in American (1,000,000 million in British).
There aren't even 100 tiles are there? and I only think you can get 1M+ on the largest tiles...

So Naru, are you sure you don't mean a million? :P

Yes, SimCity 4 is old and we need something new, and that's not something like "SimCity Societies", which is more like a "SimTown" filled with micromanagement to the level where it's unneeded. I don't want every citizens' mood, feelings and everything thrown at me every second.
SimCity 4 was much better, you could build a large city, and if the city wasn't something for the citizens, they would just run away instead of staying, making crime and so on. :P
Lol. :P

Sorry I didn't answer sooner. My largest city was the one I tried to post. It has nearly 100,000 people, not counting industry or commerce. Since I was simulating what it would look like if the amazon was populated, I did the honors of naming it the exotic name, Benladia. Not very Hispanic though. Sounds more Middle Eastern. ;D
It only has high tech industry, the largest airport possible, a huge block-full sky scrapper apartment with over 12000 people(I think), and my region, not even half filled, has over 600,000 (people). :o

Dèjá vu means you get a strange feeling of something happening that has happened before...

Hbmp88, you can get tanks if you have the Rush Hour expansion and build a barracks.

What is rare, monmafori?? If you were talking about the expansion the answer is: you have to buy it!
However i think that my biggest city (not joint with other cities) reaches about 500'000 inhabitants, but i'm not so sure about it...

Oh I have had tanks before, I thought it was an option in U-Drive-It mode. But people hate the military base. They always riot. If you want a big city, don't go for those "last minute save me from debt" type buildings. Take out a loan, build something profitable, and let it be paid off by time.

I know what it was but what was the deja vu you had? I have them in this weird form, I see a picture in a dream, a few days later, I see that EXACT thing... odd... PRECOGNITION! Ooooooh... Scary...

What page?

Btw yes, NeutronStar, that's also happening to me, however mostly where two very very similar things happen IRL. Often when I write something and write something again, feeling like I've been asked exactly the same thing before and am going to answer exactly the same. ???
It's strange.

But yes, I also don't build things like the toxic waste area or things the citizens don't like, but I really like the military and just need to have a military base in my cities. :P

There's no need to edit it. If you want an explanation on what dèjá vu is, look on Wikipedia or search on Google.
I also think I explained it in a later post, anyways, I don't see what I should edit, but if there is anything you want edited in it you need to tell me what it is.

Ok. I'm trying to explain as better as i can what a Deja vu is:

It's a strange feeling: You say that you had a Deja vu when you think that you already sow the same exact situation you are living in that moment. For example when you feel that you already sow a certain beach or heard a certain conversation. It is a short sensation (a few seconds) but it is quite impressive. It happens quite often (at least to me) like every 2 or 3 weeks, maybe 2 times in 5 days, or maybe just 3 times a year; it depends. I hope that now it is clear :)

Region size can be small, medium and large. Small is recommended by computers with 256 RAM. Medium requires a computer with 512 MB of RAM. and Large needs 768 MB of RAM.

Do you even have this game? You have no clue how hard it is to maintain skyscrapers. Nobody wants to live in a high density area. And you'd have to spend like $200,000 on transportation like subways, freeways, avenues. Way to expensive when the people won't even stay in the building. It's not like you build it yourself you just sell the land and your city is in the hands of the landlords, and all you can do is zone land for special purposed and feed money into the dept.s.

=============== Big road (boulevard/highway)
   |      |      |      |      |
 ..|..  ..|..  ..|..  ..|..  ..|.. (dots = small roads)
   |      |      |      |      |   (lines = normal roads)
 ..|..  ..|..  ..|..  ..|..  ..|..

Then the main stream of traffic doesn't use the small roads to get through the city, but instead the highways and boulevards. :)
It's very effective, but hard to change if you build tall buildings so the small roads get too much traffic.
I hate building like that. I always build roads radiating off other roads, and that seems to help. I also upgrade it.

You also live in USA, where the roads are usually built that way. :)
But the strategy is very effective. Even though I wouldn't use it in the middle of my region/city, it looks unrealistic if the center of a big city has that kind of roads I think... It also requires open spaces between some of the areas sometimes.

I make a grid of roads, and I drift away from the grid style sometimes, but your style is interesting, and I'll try it.
I cheat in the game by hacking the money code and changing the amount of money, but don't say anything about that. It doesn't destroy the game, and how would the company know?

http://cheatengine.com

It's a program, you have to do this once installed:
1. Open Simcity 4
2. Open a city
3. Hit Microsoft Key
4. Open Cheat Engine
5. Click on Find Process
6. Select the Process of Simcity 4
7. Go back to game
8. Find amount of money you have in that city
9. Hit Microsoft Key
10. Search that amount
11. Go back to game
12. Spend some money
13. Hit Microsoft Key
14. Search new amount (hit the NEXT SCAN and not new scan to search it)
15. There should only be one amount in the results list
16. Double click it
17. Right click on entry in the bottom section
18. Click Change Record and Type
19. Choose 8 Bytes
20. Right click on entry in the bottom section
21. Click Change Record and Value
22. Type in 600,000,000 (without commas)
23. Go back to game and spend some money

Naxda so far... It features a strong public sector with water access for everyone, free healthcare, police, fire department and education covering most of the city, buses and three passenger and freight stations (one in the city, two at industry areas). The city station also has a bus stop and a state owned parking lot.
And yes, the budget is fine! :P

As I hate dirty industry, I made the water so I could get manufactoring. I increased the taxes on dirty industry to scare them away, and got some manufacturing, but no matter how low I set the taxes they wouldn't build anything, and there weren't jobs enough for everyone. So I can't make a clean environment yet, and the water is also somewhat polluted near the industry. :/

Title: Re: Simcity 4
Post by: Bla on February 15, 2011, 04:39:30 PM
Yes, but then you also have to cover those under your services, at least that's my way of playing it. I try to give the citizens as many services as possible and increase taxes until I can fund them. It's hard, especially in the start, but also an exciting way of playing I think.

Simtropolis (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/)

It's by far not the official file exchange, but it lets you put a description of the file, and it lists dependencies so I don't have to experiment to make the mod work by installing one hundred thousand others mods and testing each one.

Also I use one mod that is considered an essential by the forumers of there, and several others.
One cosmetic mod that I would recommend is a simple mod, and doesn't bog down your CPUs or anything like that, since all it changes is street-ends.

Newtork Add-on Mod (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=21355)

The overpasses don't work! :( Do they work in your game, Darvince?

Hmm. I think this might be because I selected English as the language, and then it just assumed that I wanted left hand drive as well. >:(

Edit: It works now, the left hand driving caused the bug. If anyone else gets/has this problem, try this guide: Link (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=3961.0)
If you don't want to register to read it, I can copy the message in a PM.

Edit 2: I can't figure out how to make roundabouts, can anyone explain that? If I place four curved roads they won't interact with any other roads.

Edit 3: Aha, you just drag a one way road into a 3x3 square, then the NAM converts it into a roundabout automatically. And I read some 2x2 roundabouts should be included with NAM...

Any suggestions about what should be built in the fully terraformed Naxda region (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SS9N9hh_hw)? :)

The NAM comes with North American-esque capacities for streets, roads etc. so I barely have any roads in my cities because of it. :P

Naxda has grown, the image of the city is a little bit old, and the region slightly older. The region (and city) has about 17.000 inhabitants now.

Bump. I found something you can't resist if you play SimCity 4.
A regional terraforming program! (http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/files/file/21375-sc4-terraformer/)
It's very well made, has all the tools, 3D view of the region. It also lets you create a region of any size. Standard regions are 16 times 16 small cities. However, it only makes small cities in the regions.
It's better to edit a config.bmp, so you can make cities the size you want them to be (in them, red are small, green medium and blue large cities, and the resolution (standard 16x16 pixels) determines the size of the region). Remember to make them correctly though!
I made a 32x32 region, if you want it, you can download the config.bmp below. Make an empty region and replace the config.bmp generated in the region folder, then it'll be about four times larger and have different city sizes.

Other nice mods:
Stop the evil mansions (http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/files/file/23125-stop-maxis-mansions-from-growing/)

I like making the whole region large city tiles. It just makes it easier to deal with.
Title: Re: Simcity 4
Post by: Bla on March 05, 2011, 08:49:18 AM
True, even though it's also good to have many cities to connect it to. I think this could be a good plan rather than making all of them large squares, then every city has 6 instead of 4 neighboring cities:
Title: Re: Simcity 4
Post by: Darvince on March 05, 2011, 08:50:40 AM
For me, 8 cities to connect it to is enough. :3

Sim City 4 !!

Whaaaa ??

I have got SimCity 3000 on my old PC - WITH the Building Architect add-on.

You cain't get SimCity 3000 no more
Aand the Building Architect was an add-on, which you cannot Download no more

You can only Run SimCity3000 on Windows '98 or '95 - so that is why it is on my Old P.C., running in Windows '98.
I also have all of the Cheat Codes for that as well.
Lets you build Everything for Free, all types of Powerplants, all types of Waste Disposal, all types of Water Plants.
A Free $100,000 from a "money laundering" - and all kinds of extra goodies.

I have played it A LOT - and saved Lots of Cities from it.

Well, Spore didn't demand a constant connection; Spore needed a connection for content but otherwise you could play normally offline. Simcity, on the other hand, will absolutely need you to stay connected to their servers in order to play whatsoever.

Not sure if I'm going to buy it. It seems so over-hyped in their propaganda videos ofc, but I'm not impressed, the cities just seem too small compared to SimCity 4, the regions layout I don't like, the cities should be next to each other and with no enforced limit on region size like SimCity 4 so you can make something like a "true" megacity instead of just a bunch of skyscrapers with maybe 200,000 people but surrounded by farms. And I hate Origin. I hate Impulse. But only because I happen to have most games on Steam. I hate all these stupid, different game platforms trying to compete and forcing us to have 100 programs running in the background all with the exact same purpose, just made by competing corporations, just because we want to play games.

Origin is an attempt to butt into the success Steam is getting, I'm sure.
Steam is going a grand job imo even though I don't use it much and we don't need anyone else to try and change what they're doing. Anyway, EA doesn't need any more crackpot money making schemes, they have more than enough!

But it's the most simulated SimCity yet... there's garbage trucks that actually go around to each building and pick up the trash... switch to the trash view and watch the number of bags of trash for each building drop as the truck stops. I think it's really great (despite the always on DRM and small city size).

This is probably my main reason for not buying it as well. City development/expansion just seems too ristricted in this version.

I don't care if the simulation is extremely accurate. It doesn't matter if all the sims in an apartment building are reading newspapers with actual text and drink coffee. I want to build a billion apartments, whether they have coffee or not.

Agreed, maybe I would say one step forward and two back or something. It seems a bit like the same mistake as with SimCity Societies. Then it was just the micromanaging which was ridiculous. The scale also was as far as I can remember, but the micromanagement ensured you would never reach that size anyway.

I just don't see how skyscrapers can ever fit into those city tiles... The cities are going to be taller than they are wide. :l

Title: Re: Simcity 4
Post by: tuto99 on March 12, 2013, 12:38:17 PM
As I'm seeing it, Simcity 5 was a bigger dissapointment than I would have ever anticipated. The city sizes are too unrealistic, and so is the population. (Like who would find skyscrapers in a city with 10,000 people? Wouldn't you find that in a larger populated town?)
And the texturing is a bit comical. I would like this as a legitimate simulator, not something with slightly unrealistic gameplay.
I guess I might not be buying this game.

(Like who would find skyscrapers in a city with 10,000 people? Wouldn't you find that in a larger populated town?)

That was in SC4 as well. In SC4 the skyscraper growth would start at 21k population and with high R demand you could get them with very low population.
Title: Re: Simcity 4
Post by: matty406 on March 12, 2013, 12:58:27 PM
I think what EA is forcing is a co-operative game play style. Smaller plots means you'll have less space to become totally self self-sufficient and independent. No to mention if you pack out to the edges the cities are going to have un-natural, completely square footprints.

True, but in SC4 at least you could develop cities to sizes where the skyscrapers would actually look realistic. In the new SC the cities will always be too small/isolated for skyscrapers to look natural.

Agree with Tuto. Another thing I noticed was that the guy who made the video I linked to had a city with 10k inhabitants, but a bit later it said it had 500 residential buildings. They were all small houses. That's 20 inhabitants pr. house. In SC4 the inhabitants in houses were also inflated in a similar way.

Yes, another thing which seems ridiculous. A region with random squares of cities scattered around it. It is really terrible that there is no way to make cities look connected in any way other than the premade highways and rails. I guess all the regions are also completely premade and uneditable? That would leave out the entire "god mode" part of SC4 where you could make your own regions.

I still have SimCity 3000 on my Old PC - Running in Win '98.

It still works - and I have the Downloaded Architect Pack, to design your own Buildings.
They have to be put in, to replace existing Buildings.

I have ALL of the Cheats - gives you Everything without having to wait for different time periods.
Also - do Everything for Free, and get some free Dosh ( only once though ).
All you have to pay for is the Wages of City Employees.

I love that Game - but since I got my new PC I hardly ever use te old PC.
I do not have spare Monitor.
Also - Simcity 3000, Populous Undiscovered Worlds, and lots of other Games - onlt run on Windows '98, and loads of them you just cannot get anymore. But I have them still.
I also like playing Doom and Doom 2 - I have all the Cheats including Invulnerability.

Got some pics for my new region. It's quite large, with a total of 64 large tiles. I made it large so I can make a metropolitan area in te future. I'm not going to show any pics of my town though; it's quite boring right now. :P

I use a principle from someone's city journal...
Lemme see if I can find it.

EDIT:

Found the principle, here it is.

I know it's okay that I hotlinked those because he uses his site to hotlink all over teh place.

My budgets are always fine because I rarely spend much or have many services in a small town where services would bog down the cash and growth.

guess the population of each city. closest person wins a......pony. if you're unfamiliar with sc4 you can just guess the fraction of population each city has (like 1/3 for the south kolkon 2013 and 1/4 for north kolkon 2013)

When you can't raise the bar any higher, you've employed the max number of teachers for a single school, you need to build more schools or larger schools

It's 10x10 small cities so 2.5x2.5 large cities but it's not configured in a grid, it has all city types and only one large city (Kollegrad).

I made the region, I think with an external editor for making the landscape.

Apparently you can make a region from a greyscale heightmap in SC4. I haven't got it to work yet though.

http://www.sc4ever.com/knowledge/showarticle.cfm?id=1103

You need to make sure it's greyscale (GIMP can do that) and SC4 will say if the dimensions are right if it's greyscale and gets recognized.
