Title: Evolution Simulators
Post by: Bla on January 29, 2011, 12:07:11 PM
This simulation is funny. It's basically evolution applied to 2D-cars. Cars logically can't evolve, because they don't store information about them which can mutate and don't replicate. But In this simulation, the 2D cars are selected based on how good they are at traveling on a bumpy 2D road.

Try it. After running about 10 minutes, I think my best score is 804,9.

Link (http://boxcar2d.com/)

This one (http://www.qubit.devisland.net/ga/index.html) was the program it was inspired by. It appears to run much faster through the generations.

And here's Richard Dawkin's Biomorph (http://www.phy.syr.edu/courses/mirror/biomorph) program, though it's clearly artificial selection only, it's still very exciting.

Also, there's an a-life simulator called DarwinBots (http://www.darwinbots.com/WikiManual/index.php/Main_Page), which is a lot more advanced. :)

Post more evolution-like simulashunz or share your results here if you want...
And yes, I know I remade the topic, but I thought it'd be best to include many similar programs in one topic rather than going on a topic frenzy after finding all sorts of awesome programs (though I knew DarwinBots already, and have read about Biomorphs, but never found it).

Ah, yes, I've seen and used this occasionally. Makes some brilliant derpmobiles.

Ok, I just read the number in parenthesis is the target score, which is the double of the best score from the last generation.

So, my record is now 475,3. :)

Also my cars in the second simulation got worse overall, yet a few continued to improve. (a lot like these days, haha)

I like this one.. Oh, and this one too! And that one. I think I'll name the cars...

They're from BoxCar 2D. Just set a new record with Motorbike 2, 495,2.

Title: Re: Evolution-Like Games

Yay, 495,9! I didn't get a screenshot though.

But there's one more evolution game I know of... A funny fact is, that it was a creationist I debated who showed it to me. :P
It is like the cars, but more advanced and in 3D, plus it's meant to simulate all sorts of "organisms" which travel across things defined by you. I'll try to find it.

So, more evolution sims:
Framsticks (http://www.framsticks.com/) is a pretty good one, there's a free version and a shareware version that has some more features. Slightly complex creatures due to them being able to have equilibrium and touch modules.
EvoRunners (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZ309UntxMQ) is a very good sim. Although the author seems pretty dead, and you need permission to access his blog.
Here (http://www.youtube.com/user/kjlg74#p/a/u/1/l-qOBi2tAnI) is a demonstration of a creature evolved in a very similar program, that you can actually get your hands on.

You blind watchmakers, you.

I never tire of DarwinBots... it's fun but I've never sucsessfully made anything. I'm gonna make like a 3 gene thing for the heck of it. lol

I also don't even understand half of it.

Edit: I'm getting how the "DNA" works a bit. I'm trying to make my bot center the view on another bot if it detects one, and then have it attack it if it doesn't have much energy.

Started the car sim yesterday and ran it all the time my computer was turned on. I used the hills simulation. Here are the results. The best car has the code:

you car spaazzzed out at 966.2 for me "due to floating-point precision errors"
but naise car
too bad you have to be on that page for the sim to run, and not have it quitely hidden

My trick was to drag it out of one Google Chrome browser, so it runs in an entirely seperate window instead of another tab. Then it still runs even if you have it minimized.

Framsticks looks really exciting, think I'll download it soon.

wait so this has practical applications

say you wanted to design a spaceship to mars
just write a program for that and then watch as a perfect designs happen
build one

ok i got the 3dvce program from stellar alchemy its awesome!
i'm running 80 individuals for 700 generations and if it keeps going at the current rate this'll only take 240 hours
:)
on generation 5 atm :P

the creatures are pretty much boxes, but you can also manipulate the environment with explosives, items, blocks and more. You can control night and day.

In addition, you can give the animals cretain body parts and brain parts and also restrict them.
What i think is different and sets this apart, is that you can actually give animals a goal, like carrying balls which would be like carry food (like ants). Or see which one can go the fastest over flat land or rough land!
You can have swimming creatures, creatures without gravity, evolve creatures at 100x gravity and more!

so like when i'm finished with my evolution i'll make a movie :P
but for now i still have 240 hours to go >.>
Title: Re: Evolution Simulators
Post by: Bla on October 03, 2011, 10:12:06 PM
Awesome. I used to make simulations of those blocky things over rough land. I don't like manipulating with the environments, because it disturbs the evolution. It's more easy and fast to see when it only has one (or the same) problems to solve.
Title: Re: Evolution Simulators
Post by: vh on October 04, 2011, 01:13:38 AM
yes i know, i'm on generation 50 now and what sucks is that my animal is asymetrical. Its leg happens to just barely intersect past the symmetry line and as a result the other leg is completelu cut off!
Still, if it runs fast i guess its fine :D

What would be interesting would be having the settings to 50% move on rough terrain, and 50% carry balls, to simulate a creature to stockpiled food :D

On this topic....I have built an interactive evolution simulator. The idea is to show how an evolutionary process allows species to fit into their environment. I have made various aspects of the algorithm controllable by the user so they can see the different effects of each control.

If anyone wants to try it out, its at www.evolutionsimmed.com (http://www.evolutionsimmed.com)

Feel free to add suggestions as well as I intend to add to it over time.
