Title: Realistic 3D City Game
Post by: Bla on January 18, 2011, 12:20:40 PM
A realistic alternative to the old 3D city game. :)
It takes place in the "Usafreciga" Region (Universe Sandbox Forum Realistic City Game).
Google Document (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1qPIcLCAC4ofK1aBbOnMFdHNXMkXxO1RJOxxF65lJUdc/edit#gid=0)
Link to the model (http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=d24040dc6d4927613b046a05302a6383)

Manual
How to play
1: Download the latest version of Google SketchUp. (http://sketchup.google.com/intl/en/download/)
2: Sign up to the 3D Warehouse (http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/).
3: Open the file at our city game’s SketchUp page (http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=d24040dc6d4927613b046a05302a6383). - Currently, download and edit the latest file attached to our posts.
4: Claim an empty zone by filling it with your own unique color for the ground beneath your city. Please choose/make one similar to your neighboring cities. You can choose colors similar to grass, dirt, sand and rock. Ask Bla to make a new zone if there's no white zone.
5: Now build your city hall. It doesn’t have to be anything big in the beginning, just a small red building. Afterwards, you can begin building residential buildings, commercial buildings, industry, agriculture etc… According to the rules below.
6: Save the changes to the model. It should work to click the upload button and just leave all the text as it is (if you change it, it will also be saved as the same model), otherwise you might be asked before closing the program. Don't be afraid to do anything wrong, it can be reverted back.

I have to approve all the changes to the file, otherwise I'll need the e-mail address registered on the 3D Warehouse (don't post it publicly/in the topic). No one is forced to give me their e-mail address to play this game. I could also make it publicly editable, but then we risk having our city vandalized.
Ok, I can see the file has a history so you can revert it back. I'll leave it so that everyone can edit it, and revert back if anyone vandalizes it, and change the system if trouble arises.

Rules
1: Don’t use any textures, only plain colors (more details on allowed colors are below).
2: Only build on your own zone.
3: Follow the rules of growth.
4: Use the colors on your buildings, roads, pavements and planted grassy areas correctly.
5: Don’t shift-click with a color, as it might paint buildings outside of your zone.
6: Post taken if you're editing the file. If you don't upload it within 6 hours, your taken expires.

Growth
To simulate relatively realistic growth, you’re not allowed to build a lot of skyscrapers immediately.
The height limit on your buildings is determined by these formulas:

One floor is 3 meters.
The numbers are rounded down, so if you have 235 buildings, you may build 4,35 floors, but it is rounded down to 4, so your building limit is still 4 floors until you have 300 buildings.
The numbers are approximate. You aren’t meant to count 1500 buildings before building a 48 meter tall building, just count an area of maybe 25 buildings, find some similarly sized areas to get 100, and find more areas similar in size to the new area to get 500, until you get an approximate number. If you’re severely in doubt, just stay below the limit and expand until you aren’t anymore.

You can expand your zone so that the unused land you have is up to (in square meters):

You can see the area of a surface by right clicking it and selecting “Entity Info”.
You are not allowed to expand your zone in a way that makes it impossible for another player to expand.

Colors
Your buildings, roads, pavements and (not natural) grassy areas must use the following colors.
Building colors:
Red (255,000,000): Public buildings owned by the state.
Orange (255,127,000): Residential buildings owned by the state.
Green (000,255,000): Residential buildings, unspecified owners.
Dark yellow (153,153,000): Industry.
Teal (000,255,255): Residential buildings owned by individuals/corporations.
Blue (000,000,255): Commercial/public buildings owned by individuals/corporations.
Surface colors:
Yellow (255,255,000): Agriculture (ground only, houses are residence, other buildings industry)
Black (058,058,058): Roads (asphalt).
Grey (142,142,142): Pavement and paved roads.
Dirt (153,107,061): Roads (gravel).
Dark green (000,153,000): Planted grass
Light blue (000,128,255): Water
Water in lakes can also be colored a transparent shade of blue.

Alright, before I start, this in the rules:
Quote
2: Only build on other players’ zones.
I am confused.

Edit: I had a go anyway, if i did anything out of place let me know.

Sorry, I meant "only build on your own zone"/"don't build on other players' zones". Anyways, the update is fine. But can you save it into the old model so we don't end up with lots of files in different places, or is that impossible?
And do you know why are the lines white with marks at the edges now?
Also, it can't be edited as it is uploaded now. You have to select "Edit" and change the settings so that everyone can edit and uncheck the box which says you have to accept the changes first.
There's a history for files, so nothing is deleted by saving it in the same place.

Alrighty, thanks for clearing that up. In answer to your questions:
I don't think I can save over your upload, but I think you can set people as contributors, it requires sending an email and having them accept.
The white lines are there because I have a different style set on my Sketchup (Window>Styles)
Finally, I'll fix the upload so you can edit it.
Title: Re: Realistic 3D City Game
Post by: Bla on January 19, 2011, 08:16:11 AM
This really isn't good... It destroys much of the fun in the game if we have to spread out a million files on the 3D Warehouse with no real connection to each other. We could make a collection for them, but...
I suggest we just upload our cities in here as long as the file size is still below the limit. Can you upload yours to the forum?
(Btw, I still don't think I can edit your file. Only the details about the file, like description and title, but I can't download it/edit it in SketchUp.)
Title: Re: Realistic 3D City Game
Post by: matty406 on January 19, 2011, 10:13:50 AM
Sketchup files are small enough to be uploaded here. Bu you can compress it to an archive to slice the size by about 2/3.
This would probably be the most streamline way to do this.
Title: Re: Realistic 3D City Game
Post by: Bla on January 19, 2011, 10:15:15 AM
Yes, but let's not do that before the file size becomes a problem. :)
Otherwise we'll just spend more time compressing and extracting than the extra time we would use to download it. Anyways, thanks for uploading it, might build something soon...

Yes. Here aren't turns, so we can build whenever we want. The file is above the image.

Edit: Here I've built a little more.

Which of the places below do you want?
You can also draw the zone if you want, as long as it's adjacent to our zones and isn't larger than 50.000 square meters.

I'll go for 1.

but, i don't realy get it :\
do i need to build a red building first or....?

are there limitations?
Title: Re: Realistic 3D City Game
Post by: Bla on January 20, 2011, 12:59:32 PM
Yes, start by making a red building. It has to be either 6 meters or less than 6 meters tall.
After that, you can build other buildings. Green are houses, blue are shops etc., red are public buildings like police stations, dark yellow are factories etc.
Roads are also useful. They're black if they are made of asphalt, like our roads. You can look at our cities for reference.

There's a more detailed manual in the first post, but if anything is confusing, just ask.

I've also reduced my Phat city hall.

Yes, the limit on your buildings is still 3 meters, and your city hall 6 meters. You need 100 buildings before being allowed to build buildings 2 floors high, and 75 buildings before you may build 3 floors on your city hall.
You can fix it if you want, or should we continue from version 4?
Here's a tiny fix to my city from version 4, if we continue from that one, where I had forgotten to change the color of a face.

3 meters in the game is one floor. That is actually too high. My house is 2.4 meters for the first and only floor.

Yes, there isn't 3 meters to the ceiling in most houses, but remember the ceiling between each floor also has a height. I think 3 meters will be more realistic than 2.

Title: Re: Realistic 3D City Game
Post by: matty406 on January 21, 2011, 11:50:35 AM

Sketchup is just like drawing, except you can extrude into the 3rd dimension.
Roads in this game are commonly 8m across with 2m wide pavements/sidewalks. But the road that connects me and Bla is 10m wide, they can differ slightly, I have smaller roads on the outskirts that are 6m across. So draw or make boxes matching those dimensions, the size of what you're currently drawing is shown at the bottom right.

As for buildings, draw plots next to your roads, then use the offset tool to make a slightly smaller plot inside the drawn plot. You can type a number manually whilst doing this, I use 0.7m on plots.
After making your plot, extrude it to 3m. Everything is locked to a grid so you can't miss it.

Hope this helps. ;)

No problem. Here are the basic tools you need to use:
Mouse pointer - for selecting surfaces, edges etc., not so important.
Eraser - click or drag to delete lines it points at.
Paint - opens a menu with textures and colors for coloring surfaces. The colors we use are in the section called "Colors <1>", which you can find by clicking on the menu next to the house logo.
Pencil - the tool you use for drawing. Click where you want to start, and click in another place to finish a line. You can type numbers, and it'll make a line that long (in meters if that's the default unit) in the direction you're pointing. To make a surface, you must connect at least 3 points on a flat plane.
Push/pull - you can use this tool on a surface to extend it, so it becomes 3-dimensional.

Tools for navigating:
Orbit - Use this to orbit your camera around the area of the model you're pointing at. Click the tool or use the middle mouse.
Move - this moves your camera relative to the area of the model you're pointing at, but unlike the orbit tool, you'll still be looking in the same direction when you use this. Shift + middle mouse is a shortcut to this tool.

Your buttons will be larger by default, and will not be in the same places as my buttons, but the logos are the same.

Enable measurements. It'll show you how long a line you draw is, the radius of circles you make, etc. You can use a line to measure a distance and then Ctrl + Z (undo) it.

Perfect. :)
Officially, one floor is 3 meters. I can see your industrial building is only 2 meters tall. But it's up to you whether you want to make it 3 meters. It looks like a small building, maybe some sort of small shed, so 2 meters probably wouldn't be unrealistic here.

Wait a second... Sorry, but the building limit is still 3 meters on normal buildings. You need to make 100 buildings before you may make them 6 meters tall, and the chimney also counts to the height of a building.

I haven't changed anything yet, but do you want to correct it or should I try to?
I don't think the building can look that exciting if it's corrected to be max 3 meters. Maybe we can make an exception, if you just remember not to make them more than 3 meters tall until you reach about 100 buildings.

Title: Re: Realistic 3D City Game
Post by: Bla on January 21, 2011, 01:29:51 PM
Thinking about this, many normal houses actually have two floors even though they're not apartments. It wouldn't be unrealistic for our cities to have such buildings. So, I'll change the rules so that we start at being allowed to make 6 meters/2 floors tall buildings, and our city halls 9 meters/3 floors.

You can keep this factory. But the building cap will still be risen each 100 buildings, as I think it's more realistic that way.

I'm editing the file, I'll upload it soon.

Right, I think I get it now: 100 buildings = 2 floors, 200 buildings = 3 floors, 300 buildings = 4 floors, ect.
Also, I think chimneys should be excepted, a hole in the roof of a factory wouldn't be very effective. :P
Title: Re: Realistic 3D City Game
Post by: Bla on January 21, 2011, 01:38:47 PM
Now, this makes it possible to make a chimney which is one floor as an addition to the floor below. I think that's fair, otherwise we'll have to define what chimneys are, and... Not that it's a big problem, but I don't think so complex rules are needed. Also, it gives us more of a reason to expand outwards, when we will be better rewarded.

With the new rules, 0 to 100 buildings = 2 floors, 101 - 200 = 3 floors, etc.

Let's make a rule about writing "I'm editing" when we're editing, so that we don't edit at the same time and get into trouble merging it.

You're allowed to expand your territory so that the land with your color is 50.000 + buildings ^ 1,5 square meters. You can measure this by control-clicking on the surfaces with your land color, right clicking them and select entity info.

Do you want to draw it yourself? You're allowed to do that, as long as your free land doesn't violate the formula when you upload your turn.

Btw, I think I'll edit a little bit... Editing!

I don't know, is there a function that shows you the area of a shape as you draw it?
Title: Re: Realistic 3D City Game
Post by: Bla on January 26, 2011, 08:25:09 AM
No, but you can just draw a bigger area and then delete some of it if it's too big. That's what I do, at least.
Update. My first factory, it will process the products of my agriculture. We need more industry, though, SuperNova, if you want to build some.
And two collective farming villages. ;D

Btw, I just reached about 90 buildings, so I've expanded my city hall. Soon, I may build 9 meter tall buildings, yay!

Yes... Although the blapis color is.... A bit demusive. :P

There are no rules on the roads, I just see you don't have pavements to walk on next to them, which adds 4 meters to the width of my roads.
Actually, maybe I should transform the town into a biketown. :P But I'm not sure if it'd be too hard to manage biky stuff and kollektive transport like trains in SketchUp. At least rails would be complicated to draw.

Cute.

I propose we somehow annex SuperNova's area because he's not active anymore (if he becomes active again, he has the left to regain his area and have it restored, though). Maybe another person who wants to join could continue from SuperNova's spot otherwise.

We should make some sort of road between your town and the rest of our towns, through SuperNova's town.

Also, I suggest not extruding things like grass. :P And your tinytrees are reallycute. :P

If you mean SKP files, it's up to people themselves to say "taken" or something like that so other people don't start editing at the same time. But if it's easy to merge, we could probably do it.

Fiah, you violated the rules of growth:

Max floors = 2 + Buildings / 100
Max floors on city hall = 3 + Buildings / 75
One floor is 3 meters.

Some of your grain silos are 28 meters tall - you need 800 buildings before you can build such tall buildings. The building on the island which might be your city hall is also too tall in any case.

I counted your buildings as slightly over 100, it was a bit hard though, but your current max build height should in any case definitely be 9 m and for the city hall 12 m.

Well anything you make has to obey the building rules, I would count them as buildings yes. Things like trees clearly shouldn't contribute to your building count, but they still shouldn't be taller than the growth rules say, that would give people cheap excuses to build above the growth limits. Just more incentive to develop your zone I guess.

Title: Re: Realistic 3D City Game

Currently there are no rules about tunnels, I would say don't bother making them, if you absolutely want to, make them as close to the surface as possible and obviously not deeper below the surface than you would be allowed to build normal buildings above. If people think we need tunnels in the game some rules could be written regarding tunnels. If people start building 50m deep tunnels etc. when they have like 100 buildings their turns should be ignored.

Nice. I think it'd be a good idea if people posted number of buildings when uploading, so we don't lose track and have to count over again.

Added a graph of number of buildings to the sheet, colored cells green for the person who did a given revision and added some numbers based on what people posted.

I've standardized the non-transparent water color. I'm thinking maybe I should also just remove the transparent version of it, I only have 1 lake with that and nobody else used it.

Also changed the rule on max claimed land to use buildings^1.7 instead of ^1.5, that seems more balanced I think. (Maybe it should be a higher power, but we'll see).

I've also made my small tree into a component so it can be copied and pasted

I think there have actually been some forts that had farms inside to be able to supply itself during a siege. One on Bornholm had that, I think. But I didn't have time to fill it out with city, in the future I will build farms outside and city within though.

introducing the greatest housing project of all time

each of the 6 buildings has 6 floors which are used for housing. each floor consists of 4 wings. each wing consists of a left side and a right side. each side holds 4 housing units. each housing unit houses two people (4.5  m^2 per person). this is a grand total of 6*6*4*2*4*2 = 2304 people

but wait you say, that's impossible. no one can live in 4.5 square meters
i thought the same until i learned via wikipedia that in 1964, the hong kong government *raised* the minimum housing area per person to 3.3 square meters.
