Title: Flattening Ratio
Post by: Plasmic Physics on June 27, 2017, 11:55:04 PM
Can the Flattening Ratio be introduced in the next changes? To explain, the FR is a ratio of the square root of the sum of squares of two dimensions, to a third.

FR is a result of deforming forces acting on a rotating body. Centripetal force resulting from angular momentum causes a non-rigid body to flatten into an oblate spheroid. Diametrically opposing forces causes a non-rigid body to stretch into a prolate spheroid.

Flattening has some interesting effects on the thermodynamics of astronomical bodies, especialy on stars - flattening due to very short rotational periods can extend the life-time of large stars.

This will probably be added whenever Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics is added, it only makes sense at that point. Until then though, I'm really not sure.

Do you know for when is SPH scheduled?

The developers' roadmap for this year and beyond have no mention for SPH. I can't shed any light on this feature, unfortunately.

If you do wish to take a look, the roadmaps are here:

Thanks. What a shame, I would have loved to see a fat/flat pulsar.
