Title: Atmospheric entry heating
Post by: creeperz1211 on September 22, 2014, 03:12:16 AM
Hey I was thinking, could there be atmospheric entry heating for asteroids, moons ect.? (I know this might be added in a future update but this is something to talk about and your ideas) So there could be fire coming of asteroids when they enter an atmosphere.

At the scale that US2 simulates at, it wouldn't be particularly visible. Maybe when US2 has more texture-based detail.

Anyway, Dan said they wouldn't be working on atmosphere stuff for now.

I've been wanting to add this for a long time... it's on the list of things to do for sure. (but no promises as to when it will arrive)

And one of the ideas to make it visible when it often wouldn't be is a setting to artificially inflate the size... imagine inflating the Earth's atmosphere to beyond the orbit of our moon... causing it to slowly reduce speed and spiral into the Earth.

Didn't Chad work on KSP? Maybe he knows a thing or two about it...

Atmospheric entry heating is already in KSP.

No it isn't in KSP.
Homewer deadly reentry mod add it into the game.

I saw chads KSP video on re-entry shaders.

The reentry effect in KSP is purely visual, and yes, I did work on them with Felipe. It was a lot of fun to test and develop that shader. Maybe someday the re-entry FX will actually generate heat, but that's up to the team at Squad.
