Title: Drawing cities
Post by: Bla on April 18, 2010, 07:30:54 AM
I see that many people on this forum like Sim City 4 (http://universesandbox.com/forum/index.php/topic,426.0.html). Does anyone else also draw cities? Feel free to upload the cities you've drawn, if you have a scanner or something else. I like to draw cities, this is how I draw them (sorry for it being so big, my scanner also works perfectly as a microscope).

And this is the biggest city I've drawn: Blaland (http://zoom.it/bI4E)

Btw, just a reminder (because we've had a lot of posts about Sim City 4 here), we have a topic about Sim City, so I recommend posting there if your posts are only about the game, and not related to drawing cities in any way. :)

Hahaha! It works as a microscope!

I don't have a scanner, and when I was younger I would do that and then make street courses like Need For Speed Underground and Most Wanted...

I used to draw racing courses when I was younger too. I liked racing and racing cars when I was younger, I have both of those games, even though I liked racing with "real" racing cars and courses better, like Gran Turismo.

Sadly I've decided not to buy a PS3, so I can't play it. :( :( :(
It sounds so awesome, with more than six cars in a race. :P

Yes, far better than six... But still... Le Mans (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/24_Hours_of_Le_Mans) isn't Le Mans without at least 40 cars. :P

Thanks. :)

I hear NASCAR is gonna be in there. Nascar isn't NASCAR without 43 cars. Although, as long as EA doesn't make it, I'm happy. Polyphony ftw

I also both have SimCity 4 (my old favorite game) and Cities XL. But there's still nothing like drawing a city. :P
There's much more freedom.

I agree but I don't draw any, but  I drew one before. I lost it, or did I?

I can take a picture of it when I find it if I can and it's in red ink and on notebook paper. It's messy, so I'll clear it with Photoshop.
Title: Re: Drawing cities
Post by: Bla on April 19, 2010, 10:14:07 PM
I always use pencils, and do this:
1) Draw the land and water borders.
2) Draw the first roads.
3) Begin to draw buildings.
4) Erase the borders on the roads where you want new roads to cross etc., and draw the new roads.
5) Draw more buildings along them.

Simplified. But that's how I do it most of the time.
Title: Re: Drawing cities
Post by: deoxy99 on April 19, 2010, 10:19:07 PM
I just draw. I don't care about mountains...I don't put them, I just draw the land mass, then the buildings, then the roads, and I just remember to not make the lines of the sides converge, I just make the roads in a way that is normal.

Soon, I might upload my drawing of Blaland... If I can find a site which hosts 1.98GB/709 megapixel images... :P

A preview of Blaland is available in my newest video:

Yes, only zones. This city was confusing... the 72 kinda stops and you have to go through the city to get to the other 72. lol It's one of those tourist towns you hate because you have to go on city streets to get to the interstate again.

Streets named after Greek letters? Wtf?
Wtf your face. jk, yes they are Greek letters, and minerals. Southern California does letters vs minerals in some areas. San Diego has letters, and sometimes minerals. I know a place where it's not letters, but there are minerals.

Sim City 4 !!

Whaaaa ??

I have got SimCity 3000 on my old PC - WITH the Building Architect add-on.  :) :)

You cain't get SimCity 3000 no more  :(
Aand the Building Architect was an add-on, which you cannot Download no more  :(

You can only Run SimCity3000 on Windows '98 or '95 - so that is why it is on my Old P.C., running in Windows '98.
I also have all of the Cheat Codes for that as well.
Lets you build Everything for Free, all types of Powerplants, all types of Waste Disposal, all types of Water Plants.
A Free $100,000 from a "money laundering" - and all kinds of extra goodies.

I have played it A LOT - and saved Lots of Cities from it.

A city I drew yesterday and the day before it.
I'm considering thinking of planning to consider expanding it to multiple papers...

It features much more public transport than my normal cities, with many monorail stations, and road designs to make cars just about useless - there are no road bridges to the outside world. I tried using that design for a city in SimCity 4 too, and it actually solved the traffic problems extremely well.
I started on the small island east of the coast, then expanded on to the inner island. There is a mesa/cliff in the central/western part of the city seperating parts of it from each other, with some staircases along the cliff.

Anyone else who want to post their city drawings? :P

I feel a bit like re-drawing Blaland because all the water looks so strange, then I don't know if I should do it by hand or com, I think hand would be fastest, but then all the scanning is messy, I have to redo the borders on com anyway, and gaahhh...
I like the idea of drawing it in a way that fits into the Blaist Blaland official map.

Title: Re: Drawing cities

Some notes (mostly for myself):
I estimate 1 pixel around Kolkax on the USF map as roughly 5-10 km long and pick 8 km by 8 km as rough convention.
From satellite photos of cities I estimate my drawings show roughly 1.2 km by 2 km on each paper sheet. I take a guess between the two taking into account the A4 dimensions and decide the long axis is 1.8 km on each A4 paper as a rough convention.
I guess I'll have to make a lot of drawings before worrying significantly about deviating from the map.

Anyway here's some progress on the drawing with contrast enhanced

Finished drawing the city. I don't think I'll draw outside the canals, maybe farms, but probably not. Paper is hard to align and curves too easily so I'd rather draw cities on a harder material in the future.

Progress on the city, 2 central pieces are now completely complete.

I had bought 2 packs of 10 paper pieces, but sadly I found that all the paper in the second pack is too short on one of the axes for the A4 format. Fortunately it wasn't the pack I began drawing on. It'd make it absolutely impossible to align a bigger number of papers. I haven't investigated it in detail so I really hope it's just that one pack that's bad and not the other pack that's also a bit too short or something... Anyway pics

Notably easier to align after scanning onto comp than Kolkax (increased contrast on upper image)

Now the city covers 15 A4 papers and reaches out to its first major ring road. I still need to color many buildings within the ring road, though.

Well sometimes I feel the same, except woodlice and not cats. I'm kind of afraid of them gnawing or excrementing on my precious drawings. Just yesterday night, a wild woodlouse was spotted approaching the city from the east, but I managed to impose border control and redirect it kindly out of my window. But another day I also found a giant woodlouse, the size of an apartment complex, sitting in the city. A bit scary.

Cats are much more devastating though because if you're not constantly vigilant they'll come over to it and paw at it and crumple up the paper so you have to store them in a folder inside a drawer in the closet to stop it.
