1: One star
2: Two stars
3: Three stars

I'm open to having another star that's less than a light-year away, but where do we define the barrier between one and two stars in the poll? Two stars is simply when they orbit a common center of mass? The first thing I imagined when I read two stars were two stars within the orbit of the planet orbiting their common center of mass. If the other star is much further out than the planets as in several 100 AU and the two stars orbit their common center of mass... I think I'd still call the planetary system itself a one star system, because the planets orbit one star and remain relatively unaffected by the second one.

Also could someone explain how they imagine the zero-star system to work with our habitable planet Universalis? If Universalis is a star, I doubt it'll be very inhabitable.

that was naru
i was thinking maybe we like provided our own heat, or had a brown dwarf dorf at the center under a metallic core:

Darvink, the A type star flickered. All around Universalis, fingers and paws alike pointed upwards. Then it exploded. In seconds, a force field of energy was raised, protecting and collecting at the same time. Thousands of years later, the blue light surrounding Universalis faded, leaving Universalis with no Star. The smartests scientists from all around the world gathered, planning how to deal with this problem. Finally, Dan Dixon thought of an idea: Mine out our core and place and artificial heat source inside. Universalis was so advance, they did. One it was stable in millions of years, they contacted Magrathea, and had them fix up their handy work. All was well, in an self-supporting world, floating around space time.

Darvince has stated in the IRC that he thinks we need to make an infinite number of polls in order to determine whether another poll is official, and because he doesn't consider this poll official he's voting simply to corrupt the poll.
I think we should ignore his vote for this reason.

One thing I would like to point out is the fact that different spectral types provide for different plant colors, because the light that the different types of stars give off if is different colors, therefore the landscape will also be different colored.

Take for example a K0 star. The peak frequency of a star that type would be green, meaning the pigments absorb green colored lights, so the plants would likely be fuschia.

Another problem with smaller stars is tidal locking. Stars in the M class and below would almost certainly be tidal locked due to their proximity to the host star (the habitable zone is so close in) so only half of the planet gets sunlight.

now if we broke lorentz symmetry, i bet we could modify the laws of the universe so that tidal locking wouldn't work. Maybe on large scales, gravity works differently depending on items' rotational orientation, such that the planet would keep orbiting unaffected

<smjjames>Bit shorter lifespan, but not too short. sentient species evolved in 4.5 billion years on Earth, so it could easily happen around an F type star
<Fi8hOwl>but i want a y star close by

<Fi8hOwl>we can be species of flying birds
<Fi8hOwl>the usf map would have to be redone but that's ok
<smjjames>The talk about the brown dwarf thing reminds me of a Sci Fi book I once read about a colony on a planet around a brown dwarf, probably not a Y class though

Another problem with smaller stars is tidal locking. Stars in the M class and below would almost certainly be tidal locked due to their proximity to the host star (the habitable zone is so close in) so only half of the planet gets sunlight.
A K0 star should have a surface temperatur of about 5200K, which would give it a peak wavelength of 560 nm, but The Sun has a surface temp of about 5778K, and has a peak wavelength of 502 nm. But the chlorophyll which makes plants' leaves green absorbs little light at that wavelength. So the surface temperature shouldn't force our plants to be fuchsia.

The atmosphere of the planet could distort the peak wavelength of the star to a degree as well.

And definitely voting no to modifying universal laws. And no invisible pink unicorns too please.

Make some rules on for example 50% of people with a nation on the map having to vote for something for it to be decided or something like that, or a minimum poll time, like 3 or 7 days. And using a Google document like we did previously could make it easier for people to change their votes and keep track on what has been decided.

Please do not vote absurd numbers you don't want to incite a discussion to compromise, please vote what you actually want. If 22 happens to win, I would fully support having 22 planets, but I would not support any less.

(aka if you really want 22, cool vote for it!)

second: 9 planets has 3 seconds
22 planets has none
so 9 planets right

Did you guys know that Alpha Centauri B is in fact, a K1 V star? :D I knew it was a K type, but didn't really know the luminosity.

I'm going to use Alpha Centauri B and some of the 'anchor' stars for the classifications, 70 Ophiuchi A (K0V), Epsilon Eridani (K2V), and 107 Piscium (K1V) to make the accurate star.

Edit: Cool, Ubox2 alpha has most of these stars, except maybe 107 piscium.

Edit: nvm, found it.

Edit: Urf, the star dissapeared on me while editing. Also Fiah meant the first Ubox2, not the alpha.

<Kalassak> i wonder if you could solve that the earth orbits the sun by using only lunar phases (and maybe angular diameter/libration)
<Kalassak> hmmm
<Kalassak> no but it appears the discovery of inferior planets having phases does prove heliocentrism
<Kalassak> we should have a planet inferior of universalis
<Kalassak> that is pretty much as close as possible
<Kalassak> to make (some) phases visible to the naked eye
<Kalassak> and have a great middle ages battle over helio and geocentrism
<Kalassak> until telescopes were developed

in universalis physics gravity is actually proportional to N(earthmass,1e20kg)/d^2

geocentrism is more than a false myth

it is real.

well a Y star is about 200 to 300 C at the surface which is pretty cool....pun intended.

also we wouldn't have to bother rotating because our year would be as long as a day, and revolution would cause a day-night effect. So tidal locking isn't a problem
Title: Re: Official USF Solar System
Post by: atomic7732 on January 11, 2014, 11:13:12 PM
So I'm just going to flat out say it right now; I think maybe we should think deeper about star spectral type. If we sfick with our K class star our years would be only ~230 days long compared to Earth's which I think is. . . Short. (Unless someone can convince me otherwise).

Here's what I want to ask everyone: why a K star instead of a G2, an F9, or an M7 for the sake of example. Are there any benefits or reasons to go with a K star?
longer life
shorter year would be pretty interesting, quick seasons
smaller solar sytem, closer planets (i'm not sure on the math, but it might make it easier to travel around the solar system?)

I think this looks too similar to our solar system - like Juptur, Septuhn, Octane and Manydistant are too similar to Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
I'm not very fond of the names, but I'm not sure which are serious proposals and which are just temporary.
I don't think we should copy the -versalis everywhere, so I'd not call our star Solarversalis. I'm fine with having some inner lava rocky planets, that seems interesting. I wouldn't call a planet Vulcan, it was already the name of a hypothetical planet in our solar system. I'd also avoid Juptur and possibly Septuhn because they seem similar to Jupiter and Saturn, and Octane because it's the name of a molecule and I just don't really think it's a good name for a planet.

I'm not really coming up with new ideas for the solar system because I'm not really interested in designing it all atm, but I don't really know when I would so I guess I'll just comment on your proposals sometimes.

A question though is if we'll have common names for planets, or if every language will have their own words for the planets, in which case I'm not sure it makes sense to speak of official planet names. If -versalis gets dropped in everywhere and I end up disagreeing a lot with the names I might just give them Blaxian names for Blaist Blaland. The planet names I came up with for my original solar system in 2009 before Universalis:

Star: Pola
Kronaxo: Lava world
Ziva: Earth-like with life (but not civilizations)
Noxium: Earth-like, comparable to universalis
Uxnua: Gas giant similar to Uranus
Klanaxon: Red gas giant similar to Jupiter, 4 times as massive and with thin rings
Ixnaix: Gas giant similar to Neptune

saunver!

My idea was to have a set of names (whether the ones we have now are this or not idk, but probably not) which we all just used to colloquially refer to them, and then each person probably called each planet a different name. In Soleani, they're all named after dieties (how creative), so that will require canon eventually.

If I only knew something really meaningful about planets and star systems

I can just throw random opinions around about how I think it would look cool and shit, but I can't really help making something that is both realist AND cool/interesting. So, I'm currently leaving the work for the ones who are "qualified" for doing so. Or something.

You can still consider how many gas giants, rocky planets you think there should be, if they should be lava planets close to the star or icy planets far away, or barren ones, if there should be other habitable planets/moons, if some planets should have rings, if there should be asteroid belts, colors of gas giants and such. I think there's a lot of freedom in using your fantasy, as long as you just don't say they should have exact mass, radius and orbit certain distances that could make some of the other orbits unstable or contradict the physical properties of what they would be made of.

Named niederlausitz. It is located in the 2p orbital (specifically, 2p5), and has ccw spin. Scientists are still unsure whether niederlausitz is a macro-sized electon or W Boson. Only time, and a planetery-sized particle accelerator, till tell.

also niederlausitz is difficult to spot. astronomers who look for it report that they have no idea where it is

I just mean that there are a lot of realistic possibilities as long as you don't get too specific. I don't think it should be a problem with realism if you comment on how many gas giants you want, which ones should have rings, etc.
