Title: Video Request
Post by: Dan Dixon on November 27, 2013, 08:27:08 PM
It would be really useful for the team to see someone record a video of yourself using the new version (a capture of the screen) and share it here (via YouTube or Twitch or your favorite video sharing service).

Thanks!

I will try to get one up for Twitch/JustinTV since I do not agree to the mandatory use of Google Plus to do anything on Youtube now.  If I have the time next week I can possibly even do some short (30min-1 hourish) playcasts.

I am currently in the process of putting together around about a 15+ minutes video for youtube but first I have another video demonstrating a visual bug to upload first.

Video of playing around with galaxies and trying to find a good timestep. I had the impression that I needed a bigger timestep than the program recommends to see the simulation in "live action".

I'm not completely sure what happened in the end. I apologise to any potential inhabitants of the virtual universe for the unexpected apocalypse. I had not planned to destroy the universe at that moment.

Question, and I know this sounds silly, but how do u record a video on the application? I can take screenshots, but no video and I cant seem to find what the short cut key is ( tried "V" but that didn't seem to work ).. thanks a lot guys

there is no video recording program integrated, you have to download your own

What video program does everyone use?

I've used both of these historically:

Dxtory
http://exkode.com/ (http://exkode.com/)

Fraps

Well I can recommend Open Bradcaster software, it is free and, even though it is meant for broadcasting, you can broadcast to a file on your computer.
The quality is quite good and it doesn't use too much ressources.

I use Fraps (http://www.fraps.com/ (http://www.fraps.com/)), I've experimented with some free ones some years ago (mostly CamStudio (http://sourceforge.net/projects/camstudio/ (http://sourceforge.net/projects/camstudio/))), but couldn't find any that I could get to work properly on my computer, sadly. It couldn't record the sound (I later found a way to record that with the free program Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/)), but that doesn't really matter for Universe Sandbox anyway), and couldn't get the framerate above ~2 FPS. But for me it works with Fraps.
I haven't tried OBS though.

Most of the movies I made about Universe Sandbox used the built-in feature (in the old version) to save frames every x frames into a lot of pictures, and then putting them together and displaying them all for a very short while with Windows Movie Maker. I think that's a very useful feature and works better than any recording software for simulations with galaxies or lots of particles or bodies, as they're usually too slow to be interesting to watch in real-time (in the program), and saving every x frames allows you to run the sim over much longer time to get a much higher quality.

It was hard to judge what I'd get out of it sometimes, there were some cases where I ran it for a couple of hours and it turned out that the sim was simply too slow to notice the objects moving significantly. But the feature was very nice and I hope something like it gets implemented in version 2.

I want to do a solar system accretion thing with Ubox2 alpha, but I'm waiting for them to get the collision system working correctly.

A good example of what I mean is VikingFylla doing his work on the Halazon XI system. You can find him on YouTube. Sorry that I can't put a link, I am using iPad.

P.S. Halazon means snail in Arabic.LOL

YES! DARK MATTER! (I see the gravity of it)

You mean how it blocks out the glow of stars from the background? You can't see gravity, but that would be an awesome new feature in Universe Sandbox 2

If there's dark matter which is realistically distributed, it should cause the outer parts of the galaxy to orbit faster (B) than according to the expected speed (A), so you could determine it from watching a galaxy.

Does it look like the central parts of spiral galaxies orbit at the same speed as the outer parts or at least not significantly faster? Hard to judge from the video, opening up just the Pinwheel Galaxy in Ubox 2 alpha 6, I would say yes, but very unsure about it. Sadly coloring objects by speed or acceleration doesn't color the stars in the galaxy but only the central black hole, and showing the potential grid also makes it look like a point mass. The alpha feature updates list doesn't mention dark matter either, so I really don't know.

I meant the gravitational effect. And dark matter doesn't interact with radiation. (like light)

Ok. But I meant like how it absorbed all the light from the stars behind it? Or like how it blocked them out?

Dark matter doesn't do that.

The only videos you did was of the solar system's sun being replaced by a black hole (which did nothing) and over 7 minutes of moons on unstable orbits! Do something interesting, like make a solar system, make a comet hit an earth-like planet, rip-apart planetary-rings with a medium sized body. Do something that makes US2 noobs go like: " THIS WILL BE MINE" instead of making it look as crappy as the 2009 v.

FWI I kinda liked your moon madness video.

I REALLY don't have the motivation to make videos anymore. Once something new comes out, I may make one.
Before someone says "How about the recent alpha releases?" I am just letting others know that, for now, I am not making vids.
