Skype is video chat, however.
But I wouldn't be comfortable on a video chat to be honest, plus there's too much background chatter in my house.

Skype is also voice chat (which is what I think it's mainly used for), and you can also just typechat in it if you want to do that. I don't use the voice/video chat in there, I only typechat.
