This looks like Universe Sandbox on steroids. I'd really like to get it, but my computer isn't nearly powerful enough. Anyone here tried it out?

What I think about it?
I SIMPLY DON'T UNDERSTAND IT!!!
400 BILLION stars. That's 4 times the real number in our galaxy, The Milkyway, and double the number in the largest known galaxies.
SO MANY COMPLEX SHAPED ASTEROIDS!!! In a single solar system. I don't dare to think what number there would be in the whole game.
SO COMPLEX MOONS AND PLANETS!!! And 400 BILLION solar systems. I can't think about it. Help! No no no! I don't DARE to think about how many BYTES that would take. Peta, yotta! It would take YOTTABYTES!!!
Tell me how it's possible, please!

actually i fink 100 trillion > 400 billion :)

I could probably relate to that in an example. Back many years ago when I was in camp and doing a camp out, I had woken up in the middle of the night (no reason at all, nothing to do with a dream) and when I saw the vast night sky, I suddendly felt like I was on the bottom of the planet and would fall off if I moved (and I knew that was physically impossible). It quickly subsided and I saw a few meteors. Anyways, I live in the city and you know, the city gkow and all that. Really though, it was like a visceral or primal feeling like awe or something.
I already knew space was vast and I already liked astronomy, but seeing the night sky like that for the first time is just an overpowering feeling.
-
The vastness of space could be scary for the first time.
I understand what you mean. For me it was more a rush of excitement than a fear, but there is a sort of overwhelming sense of emptiness, and a lot of the planets are without life.
Speaking of which, I found a star system that had two terras, both with life. what do I win?

So I finally built myself a gaming PC and I'm absolutely loving this game.
One question:
Would installing this game to an SSD improve load times for landscape textures?
-
No idea, i guess it might, but i suggest asking on the space engine forum for a better idea, (this is a forum about universe sandbox after all!)
-
Would installing this game to an SSD improve load times for landscape textures?
Probably. I put an SSD (solid state drive) in my laptop and my start up time (power on to Windows login screen) went from 30 sec to 15 sec.
A SSD is going to improve anything that requires hard drive access. In Universe Sandbox 2 (almost) all the textures are loaded at the start of the program, so start up of Universe Sandbox would get faster, but would have little effect after the first 10 seconds or so.

Space Engine loads planet textures everytime you go to a planet, so it would probably be faster. Though I suppose it could all have to do with the GPU.
-
Except aren't all the textures procedurally generated? In which case they're would not be loading off the hard drive.

Anyway I don't really understand the feature, at least when I export them they don't seem like the ones in the game, and some of the file types are scary. You probably have to put them on top of each other with layers and blend them in some special way and color magic.

Some screenshots.
1. Binary planets within a binary star system, both of which have life I believe.
2. A hot jupiter. It grabbed my attention because it was paradoxially called a hot ice giant.
3. A nice looking terran world with life on it, two of its moons are asteroidal moons.
-
1. Terran moon of a gas giant, with life on it.
2. Same system as the first picture, take a look at the atmospheric pressure and consider that Venus's atmospheric pressure is 92 atmospheres. One could literally swim in that thick of an atmosphere, provided that it doesn't crush you first of course.
3. Classic tidally locked planet.
4. Morning on a living terran planet around an A5 V white main sequence star. Honestly though, arent A spectra stars too short lived for life to really evolve? Anyways, this star happened to be called UMa, so its in the Ursa Majoris constellation, but which one, I have no clue.
-
Check this one out. All of the ones with life that I've seen so far have been within the range friendly to carbon based life, or Terran-type life forms if you will. So, this was a surprise to me that this was so far out there.
Theres a more normal warm oceanic world in the same system with life on it.

life could have come from another planet/object (abiogenesis)
using the mass-lum relationship, the lifespan of an a5v star with mass of 1.8 solar masses can be calculated to be about 2.3 billion years (plus or minus several hundred million years).
it's uncertain how long it takes life to evolve because we only have one example, and there could be great variations depending on the environment. i would guess 2.3 billion years may not be enough for intelligent (sentient) life to evolve on it's own.

For abiogenesis (or maybe you're mixing it with panspermia?), if you're talking about the cold (more like frozen, unless the liquid is something other than water) terran planet, theres the problem of what form or how life would evolve on such a cold world. Alternatively, it could be an Europa analog.
For the planet with an A5 V spectral type sun, it seemed to have even less water than Mars since the water present were in various big lakes. I figured that life on it would still be microorganisms.
Also, there are hints that life actually started very early, within several hundred million years after the Earth formed (or at least after the late heavy bombardment anyway). It's just the long lead time between life getting started and multicellular organisms evolving that makes it seem like A spectra stars wouldn't allow higher life forms a chance to evolve.
Oh yeah, for the tidally locked world, that one has two selene size moons (649km and 789km diameter), and I'm not sure if those would be enough to subtly keep a rotation going for the planet.

3. Random pic I guess.
4. A beautiful terran world.

1. One of the bigger ring systems I've seen, and a very nice looking one too. It's even got a shepherd moon at its edge
2. Terran with 11 moons, the second (or maybe third) outermost is in a retrograde orbit. Not sure if the asteroidal one with the orbit inclined towards the camera is retrograde and the outermost one seems to be a normal one that is either transiting to or away from retrograde.

The Carl Segan part made my day :D :D :D :D :D :D

cool,where is this?
Finding the black holes in the centre of galaxies can be a bit difficult, but you can certainly do it if you go at a good speed. I fly towards the core, and click on the centre star cluster; the black hole is always in a cluster. You'll know it's the core when you click on it, and it says the name of the galaxy. I'll then fly into the centre of it, and when I do this I notice that I'm centred on a certain bright spot that appears like a star. Decrease your speed (I'm not sure what the ideal one is since I don't usually do this, but it tends to be in the AUs I believe, play around and find a good speed!) and get closer until you suddenly see a few stars surrounding what appears to be a blank area; these stars are orbiting the black hole. Decrease your speed more and zoom in until you being to see warpage in the centre of the screen, and there you have it!
I'm sorry if my wording was poor in the explanation, but hopefully after a few tries you get it. It's tricky at first, but over time it becomes easier! :)

cool,where is this?
Finding the black holes in the centre of galaxies can be a bit difficult, but you can certainly do it if you go at a good speed. I fly towards the core, and click on the centre star cluster; the black hole is always in a cluster. You'll know it's the core when you click on it, and it says the name of the galaxy. I'll then fly into the centre of it, and when I do this I notice that I'm centred on a certain bright spot that appears like a star. Thanks for info ;)
Now i search it. ;)

You can also select a galaxy, and do CTRL + G

Space engine is a 3D Space simulation software. Maybe somebody don't hear it. So let me introduction it. Space Engine is an Russian software. It has very cool effect. And the planets has more.
But I use it later. I discover its optimization is not good but others hands is good.
In my views, I think universe sandbox and Space Engine each has its advantages. So you can change it for your PC. Maybe SE is good change.

SE is a software in which you explore and randomly generated environment. It has more planets because it doesn't simulate any physics or anything like that, therefore be able to display more objects.
US2, on the other hand, is a gravity simulator where you can tear apart the rings of Saturn with Earth, make stars explode, and create solar systems never before possible by the laws of physics.
Comparing the two games is like comparing rocks and leaves.
I would really appreciate if you stopped asking these questions (or at least put them in Everything Else because this has nothing to do with the development of the Alpha, or anything to do with the Alpha), since there is no such thing as "better". Everybody has their own preferences and their own peeves.

Actually Space Engine uses real astronomical data whenever it can. It's only when you go to unobserved areas of the universe that it starts generating.

Does anyone else experience low framerate when they approach/explore terrestrial planets? My FPS is around 20 or higher when I fly through interstellar space, approach stars/gas giants and go through nebulae, but when I arrive at Titans, Terras or any other world with a solid surface, my framerate with be a maximum of FOUR. I'm still able to explore, but it's fairly annoying. :(
When I make my window MUCH smaller, the frame rate does go up a significant amount, but then the information of the world literally covers the planet itself, and it's difficult to see anything. Therefore, making the window smaller is essentially useless. I've decreased LOD to -2, compressed textures, read recommendations fro the SE forum, and my PC specs are good enough to run the program. However, I have notice that my CPU is 1.80 GHz, and not the minimum requirement of 2 GHz; everything else is good to go. Could the 0.2 difference be just enough to choke my frame rate? If not, what can I do to solve my problem?

It does simulate orbits and you can control a spacecraft that follows the laws of physics, so it is more similar than you suggest. They try to do different things, but are actually a lot like each other.

I have a pretty beefy processor and exploration can by a bit laggy too. It used to be worse, but reinstalling the game/simulator/whatever helped. I guess I had changed a setting that hurt performance.

I'm hopefully getting a new graphics card soon, preferably one of the recommended ones on the site. I've checked my specs, and my graphics card seems to be the culprit for my framerate issue. So that means I'll have a better frame rate if all goes well. ;D

I really want to play this, but my PC is slower than 1999 computers and glows on it's screen look like a glitchy egg yolk. I probably won't be able to see anything more than a laggy black square

if you like space games like space engine and ubox,(2). Then you should try (however its not free its $19.99)http://shop.keenswh.com/?aid=74471 (http://shop.keenswh.com/?aid=74471)

tfw the red giant you're orbiting is visible in the sky yet space engine calls it night
