it's best to stay in one group. once you cordon off a section of a map, make sure then enemy doesn't sneak in, once that happens you lose your bonus and it becomes hard to get the enemy out.
but yeah...europe doesn't really have many bottlenecks

I saw the Normandying coming, I just couldn't decide what front I should let go off. :P I got lots of airlift and abandon cards during the start, but for the last part of the game I kept waiting for them.
I was considering retreating from the Kiplands I occupate to older defensive points, but I realized it would just be an endless retreat where you'd get more and more armies and I'd never get enough to defend my areas.

I've been looking at the map and I'm thinking that the first province in each "type" (ie, Feudalism A, Capitalism A etc) are overpowered a bit much. For them to be worth the same as the road getting there doesn't really make sense. Maybe it could be half, but even then it is still one province. Nonetheless, it looks nicely balanced.
The wars in feudalism should be interesting, even though the map wants everyone to fight in capitalism. :P

I noticed some of the bonuses in capitalism make no sense.
For example these bonuses:
2 zones = 8 (1 zone = 4)
5 zones = 20 (1 zone = 4) - this is the middle bonus
3 zones = 10 (1 zone = 3.33)
7 zones = 20 (1 zone = 2.86)
The more zones a bonus contains, the more armies it should give pr. zone. The opposite is the case here.
A template I made for Road to Utopia map (I guess it won't work for you):

Slave society epoch has 2 armies on every zone. Feudalism epoch has 10 on every zone. Capitalism has 50. Socialism has 250. The three last zones have 1000, 2000, 4000, and Communism has 8000.
Another thing I should remember is to look at the Sl X6 bonuses, at least in my games so far I tend to avoid them early on, they seem a bit messy to navigate and not worth the bothering.

Feedback is welcome.
I think the most problematic thing is the fact that if anyone gets ahead of the rest they end up being unstoppable. It would require a custom scenario to pump up the cost of the upper zones though.
Getting ahead making people unstoppable probably means the upper parts should not give as big bonuses.
Quick ideas:
- Penalty for owning for example Capitalism that can be negated by owning all Feudalism zones and Capitalism on either side.
- Penalties for owning tiles on the road which are negated by the bonus from owning larger parts of the road.
My own notes:
Zone Ca I32 should link to Ca I30
Some bonuses should not have the same names as some zones
16B should not link to Fe B6

Anyway, I just got an idea of - what if you added maybe a 5 army bonus to the start zone or something like that so your start bonus became say 10 and everyone could move up the road step by step from the beginning and not have to prioritize so they risk ending up very differently based on luck?
By default Primitivism is already a bonus, it just gives 0, but a game creator could change it.
Another good option I think is to reduce the income of the slave road and feudalism. I think my income spiked too strongly on the graphs when that happened. The road bonuses in general may have been too strong and the bonuses in the socialism stage.
Hmm - a good way to challenge the fastest players to advance could be to set negative incomes on strategic parts of the roads, so that you could walk around them and take them just before getting the entire bonus - get more income in the short run, but advance slower - or take them and rush to the next stage. Going to implement that.

I made a new test game on the Road to Utopia map, which I have just edited.
I invited everyone who joined the previous game except Yqt. If anyone else wants to join, just tell me.
Changes to the map:
1: The connections in central upper Socialism phase have been edited so that the road is always the fastest route.
2: Added "rushing" zones on the roads, which give negative income, but where you would alternatively be forced to use a longer route, forcing players to consider the balance of reaching higher epochs vs. short term income.
3: Changed a lot of bonuses, especially in capitalism and socialism, and the bonuses of all roads and epoch transitions.
4: Made a bonus of 5 armies default to primitivism, meaning players by default start with 10 armies instead of 5.
5: Added missing connection between the zones CaI32 and CaI30
6: Removed connection between 16B and FeB6.

As Darvince pointed out, the late rushes are badly placed. They should be put one territory further back, which can be done in the slave and capitalism phases without problems. Socialism rushes are a bit different and should be ok.
Feudalism is a problem though because of the design at the end. This is just an idea on how to deal with it.
Blue x - current rush zone
Red x - planned rush zone
Red lines - connections that should be removed
Orange lines - connections that should be added
This makes it easier to get to the neighbor at the side though, which is a problem. The white zone Fe X10 becomes useless, because you can take the bonus equally fast by moving along the road. It could alternatively be made a part of the bonus Fe X4.

Feedback on the map is very welcome. I plan to:
- Reduce the Socialist Road bonuses to about 300-400.
- Reduce Communism bonus to probably 1750, so it gives 250 instead of 500 above the negative bonuses.
- Remove the accidental connections between SoX65 and SoX67.
- Move negative bonuses back to one territory earlier in Capitalism, Feudalism and Slave society. Make up for this to a degree by making them less powerful.
- Redesign late Feudalism slightly (probably mess with connections, possibly add a territory) so you can avoid the negative bonus.

you need to change finish part of this map only last territory called "communism" should be 2000 or even 3000. Just played this map and went for star as fast as is possible and get there just 3 turns before someone who spread everywhere. It is too unbalanced like this. You need give a hope for those who go fast also (not false hope like this is now).

Thanks for the feedback. The bonus consisting of the 5 last territories give you 500 armies when you subtract the negative bonuses inside it. I think that is a lot already - in our last test game, nobody ever reached an income of over 900, but when I got Communism plus one of the socialist roads, my income quickly became 3000 and the game sort of wasn't very funny afterwards. (The socialist road bonus is now reduced from 1750 to a 400, but communism remained unchanged and is now by far the biggest bonus in the game.)
I didn't want your only objective to be being the first to reach the star, rather I think the map would give the most fun if it forces you to always consider whether it's worth rushing or if you need to stabilize your current situation.
But I am certainly open to changing the bonuses in the future based on people's experiences. Do you have a link to your game? Seeing how you played on the map could be helpful.

I'm finishing up this small version of the universalis map for warlight, all the provinces are ready, I just need names and I need to do a little bit of graphical stuff and then I can try to make this a public map. The larger map will come later, it has nearly 5x the provinces that this one does, probably more tbh

I know it's not supposed to be 100% accurate, but I still think it looks really weird to have a zone extend all the way down to the lakes, might as well make it look as accurate as reasonably possible with the size. I'm not really asking to add tiny zones, if you split the zone like above you'll have 2 zones roughly the size of the zone northeast of it, otherwise the borders could just be changed a bit to like

I did an analysis of my warlight map and Medium Earth (which is a similar concept, with about the same amount of provinces) and determined that - using my formula - most of the bonuses (but not all) need to be buffed by 1 army/turn. None have to be nerfed, and Kolokia needs to be buffed by 3.
The formula takes into account three things: how many provinces are in the bonus, how many provinces border the bonus, and how many provinces you have to defend in the bonus to keep the bonus.
I calibrated it against the existing universalis map itself using a few of the bonuses, and got the numbers to match closely, but not super close otherwise nothing would really change.
Then I tested my formula against Medium Earth and determined that most of the time my formula came out 1 below that map (and also Australia is OP). Funnily enough, my formula actually subtracts 1 after all the other calculations are done. Unfortunately, this means none of the universalis map bonuses will be 1's if I do add this extra bonus to ALL of the universalis bonuses. I find that kind of odd actually, because before any changes, it matches just fine with all of the 0 army/turn bonuses on Medium Earth (Hawaii, Alaska, Japan, Korea). This would make them worth 1 (if a bonus of that type were on the Universalis map)
In the end, it's all relative to within the map itself, so I particularly think we should add the extra 1, it would just inflate the numbers more than needed imo. But I will give all the buffs etc that are required by my formula currently after the game is over. Or should I just delete it and fix it now?

I think Kolokia has too many territories, I'd suggest merging some of them, also because it's around the pole so east/west movement is shorter there. I happened to start in Kolokia between 2 players and I don't really have any bonus to realistically go for

the problem is not everyone can be on until like the weekend, because some people might not get home before bla leaves for bed (the biggest conflict is probably dar & bla)

I think their complaints are understandable, some players have huge advantages over others with the starts we've had. If we want a fair game the start distribution mode needs to be changed. Either give players ~3 territories and/or some distribution mode ensuring they don't form clusters. Truces won't really help either because some in crowded places will easily just get surrounded completely and then they'll sit inactive for several turns.
I didn't/don't actually care much if the game is restarted as it's just a test game though.

well now everyone gets 3 chances and instead of someone being in your bonus on turn 1, they can crowd you out of your bonus on turn 2
because now you're more likely to be next to many people
the game is inherently unfair because you can negatively affect other people's existence. that's the nature of maps based on geographical locations as opposed to more fantasy maps and synthetic maps like road to utopia

Maps like the standard Earth have distribution modes that ensure people can be spread evenly across the map and not clump together like we've done. On my Through Valleys and Over Hills map I added manual distribution modes balanced so that people could start in areas with similar environments in terms of bonus sizes, distances from each other etc. There really are lots of options to make the distributions a lot more fair than they've been in our games. I don't think the game being inherently competitive is a valid argument for using distribution modes that ended up putting many of us into groups and deadlocked a few people before the game even began. It can all be solved with changing distribution mode or making a custom one.

most maps i've played generally default to randomly generating anywhere? (unless you select warlords or cities)
maybe i don't pay attention but only recently have i encountered maps that have special automatic distributions to put people in spots, and they were team games where the result was absolutely horrendously unbalanced
i could make a custom warlords like the standard earth so it shows up first

Warlight exists. It is a game. It cannot be played without participation of all players. Not all players are participating. Issues arise because of this. Many people want the non-participating player to play. The non-participant refuses.

I think I might've lost if the Fiah nation attacked on turn 8, but heading for my feudalism and abandoning defense doomed the project. :P
I think there were a bit too few reconnaisance cards and too many airlift cards, and maybe a bit too many abandon cards.
A bit sad to see everybody else got slowed down a lot more from fighting.
