A nation simulator like NationStates, but more "in-depth" per say. It still needs work, like military and war, and custom flags... but it is better than some other ones out there.
I can even pass laws for a constitution.
My people didn't want Dawkin's Act.
Stupid asses.

Looks interesting but you're restricted to real world government types, currency, and languages. But I love the concepts of election and law passing.
I wanted to pass the Aesir Loyalty Act. It did not pass.

but you're restricted to real world government types, currency, and languages.
You can make a custom language. I set mine to English de facto.
Last time I checked, everybody was restricted to a democracy. Though this has been renamed to a republic, so you maybe able to change the government to, say, a monarchy either through laws or the edit nation page.
P.S. my nation is called Amadeus.

Hmm - I've done an experiment: Create 100 state owned apartment block companies. The effects on the budget were disappointing. I wonder if there are any long term effects in the game.
But of course, the results depend on the tax rate. Hmmm.
It seems like most companies make an expected profit of 1600 currency for each worker per day, according to the company page.
But on the budget, the apartment block companies I just made only gave a profit of 4.38 currency per worker, while each worker earns around 239 currency in wages. With a 25% tax rate, that's a net loss of 175 currency per worker for the state, or a loss of 350,000 currency in the budget.
The observed change in the budget is 351,000 currency.
While setting the tax rate up balances it a bit, it's clear that making these companies can't help the budget unless they make a significantly higher profit.
-
Ok I had a hypothesis: The low profits were because I created many more apartment block companies than the country needed. I tried instead to create one window cleaners company, the first service company I made, with 30 employees. On the companies list, the annual profit is listed as 48,000 currency, or 1,600 per worker. I see, dividing this by 365 actually gives 4.38, which is exactly the profit that it gives per day. I thought the years in game were just a day irl, but apparently they're an irl year.
Conclusion: The low profits have the exact values that were listed as expected on the company creation page. These are a tiny fraction of the wages and cannot be made up for without much lower wages or an extremely high tax rate. Creating public companies, it appears, in the current situation, cannot be beneficial to the budget within the game mechanics, without income tax rates well above 90%, whose implementation would probably result other extremely negative consequences in the game.
Edit: Apparently the lemonade stand sector just doubled in size and unemployment dropped from 33% to 10.5%, so the budget surplus doubled. I suspect the public investments boost that, while tax rates have a negative effect. In any case, I suspect I should've focused more on resource extraction, especially energy resources, in the start. Ran out of energy and the second power plant is very expensive.

Experiment: How does increasing your land size affect your nation's stats?
I increase land size from 200 sq. km to 300 sq. km, going from pop dens of about 2,500 people pr. sq. km to 1,667 people per sq. m.
Observed effects: Birth rate increases and immigration rate decreases, boosting the pop growth rate by 22.6% overall.

Read some economic advice so I have increased tax rates significantly and will see what happens. The extra income is strongly needed. More data here on growth rate increase after land purchase. It appears that purchasing land to increase growth is indeed a very good long term investment, so the Party is having fierce debates on whether the focus on power plant should be abandoned in favor of land expansion.

"On planet Terra there is limited land; the price of the land therefore reflects its availability. Adequate land is important for your population."

No, no. As in why would the name be about the planet itself?

-
I've thought a bit more about the state owned companies. The reason why they always harm your budget is because you effectively pay wages twice - as your only income source from them is profits (where wages are subtracted), and wages are then also listed as expenses in the state budget. Made a post here:

And I also brought up the Personal tax rate to 45% and Corporate tax rate to 100%.
Tips:
When Unemployment reaches 15% put corporate tax to 0% then back again to 100% when it decreases below 15%.
Always have Disease Prevalence under 15%.
When you have an election put all tax rates at 0%.
Always have a population density under 1000 people per square km.
Population Happiness is at 50.27% for me. I would suggest that it never go under 35% as people would likely riot.

Yes, the game is very slow. The only way I know of to speed it up is to buy those tokens and use them. But the more you play the faster the game goes. The most powerful nation makes $100,000,000+ in a day.
-
The game aims at total realism, considering that I think it's rather fast actually. In a year you can easily more than double your population.
I don't think it's a very good idea to save up for 5 of every building though. From my experience you don't need more than 2-3 clinics, schools, etc. before their effects end up being more of a burden on your budget than contributing to it.
Also, instead of saving up that much, you could progress faster if you spent it as you got it as the first few schools, police stations etc. will increase your income if you recruit the optimal number of people.

I have more than 12 clinics because my DP is stuck...
-
But if it's stuck, isn't it better to focus on other things then? :P Like laws, I think that many clinics will hardly improve the DP or any other stats and just be a burden on the budget. Do you still get a higher income from employing more nurses?

Not really, no. Also I have 22 clinics and full amount of nurses. I am passing laws that will increase the population's happiness. Am trying to get DP under 15% (at around 15.57%).

So just passed the Equal Suffrage Act or something (Like Universe Suffrage law, expect not full and universal).
Unemployment went from 14.97% to 4.43% and up'd the growth rate and increased the income by 5 million.
So if you need jobs... just pass that law.
-
Laws can affect the stat that determines at which unemployment rate companies autofound, by default it's 15%, but if the law lowers it by maybe 0.05%, it would cause companies to found in your nation, which also increases your income. So it's not very clear just how effective the law would be for that, even though it appears that it helps to a degree. :P

Value of exports: 1,140,043,381 currency
Value of imports: 813,124,768 currency
Difference: 326,918,613 currency
The government has created a Department of Speculation which exploits the international capitalist system for the good of the people.
Also, I passed Subsidisation of Research Act. I don't recommend doing it if you're interested in your stats. It doesn't seem to have any positive effects, it just lowers average income a bit, doesn't even increase literacy.
However, I suspect there's a chance that it'll pull the unemployment percentage threshold a bit down for when autofounding companies, which ofc wouldn't be a visible statistic there, but that's just a guess.

It's the total since I made my nation, so it'd be 20 million per day. Of course, a big part of that is from regular exports and not just speculation in the market, I only really began that over the past few days. :P

I'm curious what the exact formula that determines land cost is. I've gathered a bit of data so far to investigate it.
Linear/first order polynomial: This quickly gets ruled out as you include more data. (image 3 at bottom)
Exponential: Checking how much the cost increases per level, and then how much the increase in cost increases per level, and then how much the increase in the increase in the cost increases per level... suggests an exponential (or complicated power or high order polynomial) component. But, once enough data is included, the data appears to follow a curved path even with a logarithmic y-axis (image 1), so it must have a non-exponential component.
Second order polynomial: It appears to follow the trend line, but it's ruled out by the derivatives.
Power: This looks promising. With log x and y axes, it looks like a straight line, and the trend line follows the data very well.
Could the fine function of
(http://i.imgdiode.com/o5dyMH.png)
give us the correct price of 1 additional square km. of land (p) when your land size has a given area (a)?
Predictions:
If you have 2,000 km2 of land, the next km2 would cost 11,903,273 currency.
The observed cost is 11,903,318 currency.
If you have 5,000 km2 of land, the next km2 would cost 117,511,038 currency.
The observed cost is 117,585,895 currency.
If you have 100,000 km2 of land, the next km2 would cost 2.0952 * 1011 currency.
The observed cost is 2.1027 * 1011 currency.
So it seems to be the correct formula, even though it must have more decimals.
By integrating from 100 (the land you start with) to your final land area, aF, we can then find how much money was spent getting all the land:
So this says I've spent 788,000,000 currency on getting my total of 1,080 km2 of land.
Aceziyora Kazerano has spent 385,000,000 currency on the 880 km2 of land.
The Moltinian Empire has spent 34,700,000 currency on their 443 km2 of land.
And the Ivory Coast with 2,000 km2 of land has spent 6,800,000,000 currency on land.
And that the first square kilometer of land you buy should cost 6,760 currency. I can't remember the number anymore.
Anyway, here's a graph on how the total land cost goes as a function of your size.
The question is then, how does your income go as a function of your population, roughly? I have a bit of a feeling that the income from population isn't big enough to balance this land cost, which would mean bigger nations would tend to end up with higher and higher population densities.

Hmm... most supported bill I passed was around ~370.

I'm gonna wait until I get 400 mil to get 3rd city. I'll only be on site for elections and laws until then.
Current money 50 mil.
Income per day 70 mil.

ha i already have third city
second city only town though
-
I don't have access to project terra, as i have no internet at home. Is there an 'expiry date' for nations. Also what is my income/ a day?
As far as I know, your nation doesn't delete itself after a long haitus.
And what is your nation called?
-
Your income is 72,450,578.34 currency/day.

So, uh... just found out today that there is no way to repeal laws even though there is a grey button that says "Repeal" on the laws you passed... don't try to repeal laws, it will reset the time and it will have no effect.
Be careful with your laws for now.

also, are the prices randomised? i never sell my stuff at like 4,768.21, does anyone else? seem's kinda tedious

If you put a sell offer, the price it ends up having that others see is multiplied by 1.05.
If you put a buy offer, the price it ends up having that others see is divided by 1.05.

I focused on exports and speculating in the market, and in spending, I focused more on city development than land (at least compared to Fiah and you). I will focus on land for a while now, though. In legislation, I've focused on getting more immigrants to boost growth rate and get a bigger workforce, and socialist policies.
And thanks
Swonx: I don't update the sheet every day, haven't updated your nation there for a few days, so the value you see is probably from a few days ago.
Others are welcome to help update the spreadsheet.
-
ah yes I recently discovered selling things on the market and it is simply magical
-
Just but up a offer of 10000 concrete for $8000 per ton. I always make my offers the cheapest, though there are some offers of 40000 or more.
-
I also usually make my offers the cheapest, unless I feel it's too low, then I'll set some ludicrous high price and sell like 100 of the unit.
-
Just but up a offer of 10000 concrete for $8000 per ton. I always make my offers the cheapest, though there are some offers of 40000 or more.
Why not make it 8399 currency/ton? That way you're still cheapest, but only 1.05 currency/unit cheaper than the second cheapest so you avoid crashing the prices.

The Netherlands, one of the densest countries in the world, has a population density of 497 people per sqkm. meanwhile, in Project Terra, it is recommended to keep your population density at no more than over twice of that.

I need tips so that I can sell in the market in the most efficient way.
Also I spend all my money on land just now to keep it the pop. density under 800 per sq km (I ended up with exactly 800 per sq km...). I know have 1,145.00 sq km and got a decent growth boost.
-
On the land screen "Total Terran Land Used: 1,046,281.00 sq km"
So assuming that Terra is the same size as the real Earth, all the nation's in-game have only used 0.7% of the land. But it may very well be that Terra's land size is infinite.

holyfuck my income just boosted a lot 77,979,783.87 somehow

But I'm running out of reasonable taxes to pass, kol. I don't want to tax literacy, beards or intelligence. Illegal drugs, I really don't know how you'd even tax illegal stuff, I'd rather arrest them on the spot.
Then there's the poll tax, uhh, seems like a bad idea, as it's a flat tax based on simply existing and isn't tied to any property or income.
Then again... I'm not a big fan of beards... Maybe I should tax them...

-
The reason why your income is very low is because your tax rate is very low. 45% maximizes income in PT.
Blaist Blaland's income: 174,845,522 monies/day
-
I want a happy population though.
Okay whatever then.
-
The only risk a low happiness brings is the chance of stuff like revolt, but a 45% isn't enough to make that happen.
Here are some laws that boost happiness:
UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION ACT
NATIONAL PRIDE ACT
E-DEMOCRACY IMPLEMENTATION ACT
INDUSTRIAL WASTE MITIGATION ACT
SEMI-UNIVERSAL SUFFRAGE
NUCLEAR APOCALYPSE PREPARATION ACT
-
Happiness affects a lot of your other stats like growth etc. However, I'm almost certain that in all cases, 45% tax rate is ideal to ensure the fastest growth, both economic and population. Because lots of money lets you also buy lots of land and cities, boosting your growth more than a slightly higher, natural pop growth would with a lower tax rate.
Anyway, in the end, it's your choice if you'll prioritize immediate happiness or growth/future potential in the game.

-
Lovechild, I see you have 0% tax rates, I suggest setting them up so your money don't slowly deplete.
45% personal tax rate and 100% corporate maximizes income.
Personally I like the slow pace of Project Terra. It aims for "total realism" but I think it's much too fast for that - it's been like 3 months since we started but my population has already quadrupled. Not realistic.
The pace makes it nice to play the game casually over months or years.
I
should I just
Sell 50% of all my resources for money? I'm bad at marketing.
If you want to earn money from the market, place sell offers for the resources you don't need underbidding the best offer (if it's significantly big, and not like 5 or 10 concrete).
At the same time, place buy offers on the same resources to fill your storages again, overbidding the highest buy offer, if there's a significant price difference between the buy and sell offers.
As such it doesn't really matter to me which are my resources and which are from the market. It's all just about selling and buying as many resources as possible, at as big price differencies as possible, while still spending those you need on your own nation. :P
-
the thing is I'd like to get some really progressive ideas through... the way I see it I'm not losing money fast enough to require taxes yet. do correct me if I'm wrong. -
...is mine even on there? I don't see anything that looks liek mine.
-
also: considering that my election will be held after the next law is voted in, I thought it would be good to expand on my existing policies, kinda.
so far I have minimum wage and equal pay laws enacted. tried to enact a socialism one but it didn't pass.
the ones in line next, in order, are:
UN Declaration on Human Rights
Foreign Investment Inducement Act
Universal Suffrage
Free Higher Education Act
good choices y/n?
still haven't set taxes, jsyk. I'll be doing that soon but not yet. I'd like to get a few more policies through first... and losing only 3 million per day I can afford the time.
-
You can change the tax rates at any time without affecting laws.
I've enacted all those except for Foreign Investment Inducement Act, and I think their results are good. Free Higher Education act I think doesn't boost the key stats to improving your nation in the long run (income and population growth) but to me it's still satisfying to have high literacy and other stats in general.
Universal Suffrage I think is the law of those that gives the biggest bonuses, and Equal Suffrage Act (or something like that) is similar.
Your nation wasn't on the chart because I cropped it as a few of the data was very far off, and including it would make it hard to see the trends for most countries. You can see it here:

Pretty small, at least in terms of the size of nations. The population density is high. My four cities might as well be one city.
-
I think the reason is that your income and pop grows exponentially (well, it might not actually do that, maybe more like a power function or something, but something like that), so they made land costs increase like a power function.
I do think it's a too "steep" function (I wrote more details about it earlier in this topic), but they say eventually war will become the cheapest method of gaining more land, so I guess that's their reason.
Yes it's becoming painfully expensive. :P

kol, isn't that like astroempires?
imo, they should let costs be linear, and let scarcity be a soft cap on income/land

I don't think PT is like AE, but I'm not sure. AE seems more like logarithmic growth (very fast in the start and pretty much completely stale after some years), I haven't played PT for years yet but it doesn't seem as stale. Pop growth and income actually does seem to grow like an exponential or power function in PT. Check this
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/14bSI1daftrQBx6jq1Uaq83t5x8sKbhAC880pGgIrVKA/edit
Late-game might look different, buying cities will play smaller and smaller roles in your pop growth as natural growth from land becomes bigger.

hmm ok. i think for the food, you can feed like 1 wheat every 3 days and not have it starve, but if you feed people enough for 3 days, you can survive for 6 days etc. not sure on this
also about 10 days to 2 mill and i have 1.4k land now

2 million people sson
also im somehow getting 205 mill/day
meanwhile bla is getting 3 million when i get 2 mill
-
also this is stupid, a rank applicant is still in the alliance
-
this might be confusing
it's about land costs
Let's say i have
1000km of land
it cost $100 to buy 10 more
it cost $200 to buy 20 more
it cost $300 to buy 30 more
HOWEVER
if i use $100 and get 1100 land
it will cost $110 to buy 10 more
it cost $220 to buy 20 more
etc. is this the case? im not sure

Found approximate expressions for when buying an amount of land or a city will pay off. It assumes getting such an upgrade makes your pop increase by a constant number each day, which isn't entirely correct, as it probably has some exponential decay over time. Measuring such a decay would probably be tricky.
I ran a 'simulation' in a spreadsheet iterating the income/pop added over the days that verified the expressions were correct as long as the assumption is true.

Currently focusing on getting more land. Reached 3,260 km2 while the PT record atm seems to be around 3,550 km2
-
Religion Prohibition? Doing this is no better than the reasons that you banned religion.

ironically the groth rate went up by 10
-
bla, i have barely any. how many do you have?
-
Barely have any what???
-
oh clinics and police stations and schools and stuff lke that
-
I have about 1-3 of each or so. But remember they're of no use if you don't recruit doctors, policemen, etc. I've recruited the amount in each city that optimizes my incoome.
-
reminder: re-enact the coorperation tax
-
bla dya know what happens if you buy the item but your storage is full? do you just lose it?
-
Yes
-
i'd love playing it and building universities but it just takes way to long to load a page
alas, i'm restriected to buying land and selling resources
-
population on nation page and population in current stats is different... this can't be good
-
bug:
day 1, 1 person
day 10, 10 people
say 1 person needs 1 food
20 food units on day one will feed for 20 days, but if you feed every day, it would increase.
-
Your pop constantly increases, so it takes more and more food to feed. So the expected time when you'll run out of food keeps decreasing a bit because consumption increases.
Also, there are diminishing returns on distributing resources in the game. If you distribute 10,000 food units they might last for one day, but 20,000 will then last for a less than 2 days, and so on, because the game makes more of them go to waste if you distribute a lot. So you should distribute as often as possible.

3k km o land
-
Well, so I was on a quest to reach the record for most land on Project Terra, but... I think it'll be a while before that happens now....... eh

I does seem pretty not-legit.

In their urge to presumably transfer money between nations they dropped a neat ~7 billion currency into the treasury of our glorious socialist state today. 8)

A small lead on the land front

no you are the largest nation because fgdsd is a h4ck3r
-
I agree, I don't acknowledge the existence of fgdsd due to
1) unpronounceability
2) refusal to start nation name with capital letter
3) an amount of land that doesn't remotely follow the general land-population-age distribution in the game
Therefore I declare their their government Officially Illegitimate and claim casus belli: Enforce Proper Statistics and Typography.
-
nice jobe on that 7 bill
you should write a script that just updates the daily values for you so you dont have to wait like 5 minutes for the pages to load
-
Thanks. Most online games have rules against scripts so I don't think it's a good idea though. The extra money won't help if they delete my nation.

like they even moderate this game
-
like they even moderate this game
They don't now but you never know what'll happen in the future. Especially not if they pass development on to others.
-
The timber market hasn't been working since around the beginning of April, I posted it to their technical forum on April 6. It's really a shame how much the game is being neglected.
http://forum.project-terra.com/index.php?app=tickets&showticket=269
http://forum.project-terra.com/index.php?app=tickets&showticket=272
So everyone make sure not to buy timber. None of my offers from the beginning of April went through and I only lost money.
So you may want to consider buying land instead of cities if you don't want to wait for them to fix it.
