We have also noted since before Update 35 that laptops or other computers using integrated graphics (rather than discrete graphics hardware) may have issues with Universe Sandbox, even if they meet the video memory requirement.

However, you may still have been able to run Universe Sandbox on computers below our minimum requirements with integrated graphics cards, even ones that have reached end-of-life and no longer receive updates from the manufacturer.

Why is this happening?

The latest update to Unity, the game engine we use to create Universe Sandbox, now requires integrated graphics cards to support at least DirectX 12 Feature Level 12_2. When DirectX fails to start, Universe Sandbox uses Vulkan, a backup graphics mode (which is also failing).

We regularly update Unity so we don’t fall behind, which makes it easier to take advantage of new technologies, like those used for our new physics simulation architecture (DOTS) in Update 36 | Pale Blue DOTS. Doing regular small updates is much simpler and leads to fewer issues than doing sporadic large updates.

What is DirectX?

DirectX is helper software that sits between Windows and your graphics hardware..
