Any way to retrieve a database from this program?
« on: December 05, 2009, 10:31:18 AM »
Hi there, I just downloaded and installed this program for educational purpose for school. It is a great program and looks stunning I enjoy playing with it. But I need to do research on planets and it will be great if there is a feature to list information of all known planets/moons/asteroids from this program. If this function exists please tell me how I can retrieve it, thanks very much! Great program!!! :D

All of the data used by Universe Sandbox is stored in spreadsheet compatible xml files.

1 - Load Universe Sandbox
2 - Click on New System then 'Create New System File'
3 - This will open up the Universe Sandbox\Systems folder in (My) Documents
4 - Open the 'Copy of Data for Reference'
5 - You can find properties for the planets in "LocalObjects.xml"
Because these files are a copy of the original, they are safe to delete or edit.

I'm sure there are some mistakes and many of the values have large ranges of uncertainty which aren't indicated. Be sure to check these values from other sources for anything important you may be working on.

Let me know if you have any other questions or need more help.

You can also find the original data here:
Program Files\Universe Sandbox\x.x.x.x\data
Be careful if you edit these files here, this will change the behavior of Universe Sandbox.

Hello Dan, thank you for the quick reply. This is a great help for my geo course :D!

Also, is there a database for the planets/moons/asteroids that display all their images that can be found somewhere in the program's directory? Thank you so much

Is it an online course, or a college or high school course? also, does it cost anything?

Plus, if it costs anything, is it worth your money?

There are planetary map texture found in the Media folder, but the images of the planets in Universe Sandbox are made by wrapping these maps onto spheres.

Check out Wikipedia... They're an amazing resource about space (and everything).
