usfn globe length of day and numeric system
« on: March 09, 2013, 10:32:28 AM »
since the number base is standardized here on earth it would make sense if it was standardized on universalis too (although it might not be). so post two numbers. the first one should be the length that you think the universalis day should be in SI seconds, the second should be the number base system to be used.

Base 10 (because we have 10 fingers and so that makes it evolutionarily natural)

What about saguans?

Nope, according to darvince they have 4 in each hand.
So we should have 'two official base systems', one in base 10 and the other in base 8. You use what you want.

imo base 8 is better because it can be easily interchanged with base 2 which is logic (trublu or false)

I thought I signed up for a fantasy world not some alien world where people count in base 8 and the day is like 20-28 hours long

technically doesn't the middle pad or the fifth "thumb" (way down and you can't see it very well) count?

Either way, if the saguans don't have a thumb they're in big evolutionary trouble.

protip: the earth's day is 20-28 hours long too

second protip: base 8 has nothing to do with aliens

third protip: wtf makes this world alien and not fantasy

fourth protip: protip.

What I mean is that I thought we were going to keep all the basics (planet rotation, base counting, way of eating food, etc) the same but apparently not.

If we evolved without a ring or middle finger then I would not mind base 8 as much

First - who chooses the things about saguans is darv, not me. Second - what if they have three fingers and a thumb? Third - well, technically (if it exists, ask darv) it counts, but isnt used.

Fantasy includes alien problably. And you have your things, I/darv/vh can have ours.
And I want a 24 hours day. And a 365 days year and etc.
And base 8 isnt alien.

day length: prime number just above 100000 s

base: historically 10, now base 8 or 16

8, ok
And some pesky conservative nations still using base 10 (aeridani, holy yektonisa (?) (they seem conservative to me :P))

also, saguans have 4 on each paw therefore base 8 is most logical

So until now
base 8 being official: votes = 4 (me, vh, atomik, darvince)
base 10 being official: votes = 1 (fiah)
