I like how atmic literally makes a medieval adaptation to all the technology stuff i say here. I'm not being sarcastic either.

Just sharing this statistic because I think it's interesting, given how many people are ironically terrified of flying.
http://www.dr.dk/nyheder/indland/grafik-trods-gentagne-flystyrt-fly-er-den-sikreste-rejseform

Fatal accidents per billion passenger kilometers travelled:
Plane: 0.08
Train: 0.14
Bus: 0.20
Car: 3.24
Motorbike etc: 49.91

Plane pollution is still a problem though, but the common fear of flying is clearly irrational.

«the IPA tables should be as iconic as the Periodic Table. They are about as relevant to normies’ lives as each other, and the only reason they’re not is that schools drill one into your head and not the other.»

Schools 'drilling' periodic tables into people's heads is a brilliant idea because it is useful to anyone who will do anything related to physics, chemistry, biology and many other areas of science, many areas which are highly useful to society and lead to new inventions, technology, medicine and discoveries. I think it's fine to be interested in phonetics, and the table may be useful to people who go deeply into studying language beyond just for speaking and writing. But it isn't nearly as useful or important to as many people or to society as the periodic table. We don't need as many people studying linguistics as we need chemists and physicists.

imagine a world where you can actually understand people who are trying to learn danish because they don't have nearly impenetrable accents

I dont think you should "drill" anything into anyone's head. The periodic table is important for a lot of sciences but not everyone is going to deal with chemistry when they get older and pursue a certain career. It's the choice of the student if they want to learn something like chemistry and other sciences but some will always pursue something non related. Im not gonna waste my time memorizing it if i want to become an artist, or a music producer. Cant say that its bad to at least learn about it though.

I have 2 Chinese and a Malaysian friend learning basic Danish and I think it's already possible, the table isn't necessary for that. I've learned Danish, German and English without the chart, and my English accent sounds Danish, but as far as I know the accent mainly changes by speaking it a lot and practicing. In fact it's hard for me to see why you would use the chart while you speak. It's fair enough if you think the chart is more important than what I wrote, but then I think you should explain why instead of leaving me to guess why you think so.

I don't think people should memorize it either, I also only remember parts of it, and there are many parts you won't need to remember even if you're a scientist. But I think everyone should learn about it in school. Indeed not everyone will be going into chemistry but there's no way to know where a 7-year old will go unless you make a masterplan for them or take their astronaut dreams seriously, so they need to learn a bit from all the areas that will be important for most people in society, then specialize in what they're best at and what's most needed etc.

I think primary and secondary school should be a time where you are exposed to as many topics as possible, and not a time where you focus on some career goal. If you want to become an artist, sure then go to art school after graduating high school.
i wasted like 6 years of my life in elementary and high school knowing what i wanted to do

it was a 6 year monotonous grind that i'll never get back

i remember in 7th grade being like 'can i just go to college so i can learn what i need to already?'

sure some of my high school experiences were probably preparatory for college without being directly useful in any other way, but that could have easily been condensed down to like 2 years, not 6.
