What is the difference between buying it from steam or the official website?

None, but the steam version, you'll have to start up steam to have it run. Also the steam version comes with several achievements. I personally don't like steam and i've heard bad things about it so i bought the standalone version. The steam version will ocassionally has discounts which lowers the price to something like $2.50 though.

Steam has achievements and stuff.
I bought it just regularly for my desktop as it's easier to access
