I'm not going to boycott products to protest SOPA... I don't even see how products are related to internet censorship? If I were to do so however, I'm only going to do it to companies that support SOPA.

So I saw this. Why not. :)
I was thinking of this. I was thinking at the same time, how to spread it to the public. Maybe put up signs at nearby movie theaters and stuff to raise "awareness", for lack of a better term?

I'm not going to boycott products to protest SOPA... I don't even see how products are related to internet censorship? If I were to do so however, I'm only going to do it to companies that support SOPA.
That would be the entertainment industry. Which make millions (even billions) from people buying stuff.

The entertainment industry's profit hunger is the reason why these laws are being discussed. They want to stop people from pirating their stuff, so they will have to buy it instead. Which is an understandable goal in a society based on money, even though these laws will also have some other huge consequences than just preventing people from pirating.

The companies which support SOPA don't say it officially, because they know they'll get slammed by the people, to some extent - just like GoDaddy earlier in this thread. Some corporations have said publicly that they oppose it. I usually go by this rule: Always assume the worst of corporations. :P If they haven't said anything anywhere, I assume they support it.

I personally think it'd be good to show all of them in every way possible that we won't accept any of this at all. And if they don't support SOPA, you can still buy their things after March.
But it's up to you. I just think this is one of the easiest things we could possibly do to protest.

I agree. Economic boycotts during this economic depression wouldn't be wise.
Wouldn't be wise?! They have more money than they could ever need for five lifetimes! Not to mention the people who actually are buying stuff could afford to have that money for other purposes.

This video is very interesting.
The video you NEED to watch about SOPA!

Watch it before YouTube is DNS blocked for SOPA violation, kolkolkol.

Also, here is an Avaaz campaign against ACTA (another international SOPA-like law):

...Edit: EU voted for ACTA yesterday :( (2012-01-26) (but it will still have to be approved by the EU Parliament). [Source]

Oh spaggeti no.

I wonder if the creation of that was a response to SOPA? Sort of like 'Oh yea? Well two can play at this game!'

I don't deal in conspiracies, but global corporate conspiracy anybody?

Kader Arif, who was appointed to investigate ACTA for EU, has quit his role in disgust:

"I want to denounce in the strongest possible manner the entire process that led to the signature of this agreement: no inclusion of civil society organisations, a lack of transparency from the start of the negotiations, repeated postponing of the signature of the text without an explanation being ever given, exclusion of the EU Parliament's demands that were expressed on several occasions in our assembly.

As rapporteur of this text, I have faced never-before-seen manoeuvres from the right wing of this Parliament to impose a rushed calendar before public opinion could be alerted, thus depriving the Parliament of its right to expression and of the tools at its disposal to convey citizens' legitimate demands.

Everyone knows the ACTA agreement is problematic, whether it is its impact on civil liberties, the way it makes Internet access providers liable, its consequences on generic drugs manufacturing, or how little protection it gives to our geographical indications.

This agreement might have major consequences on citizens' lives, and still, everything is being done to prevent the European Parliament from having its say in this matter. That is why today, as I release this report for which I was in charge, I want to send a strong signal and alert the public opinion about this unacceptable situation. I will not take part in this masquerade."

Apparently the effects of ACTA go beyond the internet, sounds like EU's parliament has worse issues than the US congress....

USA has already signed it.
"The United States, Australia, Canada, Korea, Japan, New Zealand, Morocco, and Singapore signed the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) at a ceremony on October 1, 2011, in Tokyo, marking an important step forward in the international fight against trademark counterfeiting and copyright piracy." (couldn't resist including the last part, for the kolz)

Also, here's the law:

But that doesn't affect how much trouble we are in, and USA started SOPA and PIPA. :P

I don't think EU nor USA are doing good... They both seem deeply corrupted by corporations (corporrupted?).

If you lived in Iran, would you automatically think it was a good place to live?

I'm against EU. I think there are some good things about it, but the bad things outweigh them.

No, I'm in the Aeridani Space State Union.

What I meant was that he admitted that his union is a corporrupted one.

I don't know about corrupted, but yes there are problems involving money and lobbyists. The extreme partisian split isn't helping things either, along with the lowest congress approval rating EVER.

A few others are also participating, CNN said that some european sites had already started the blackout, I believe Reddit is participating, not sure who else.

Minecraft.net was participating. And Google.

TL;DR: The USA voted to keep the Internet out of the UN's hands and make sure the US keeps control over it.

I know they still can't control it, just saying they don't want the UN to "try" to do it either. If the US did "try" the Internet would laugh and workaround it as easy as pie.
