Space Engine (game)
« on: September 11, 2011, 08:10:22 PM »

This looks like Universe Sandbox on steroids.  I'd really like to get it, but my computer isn't nearly powerful enough.  Anyone here tried it out?

Am I imagining this or is that a screenshot of the camera panning to a planet's surface on the website's slideshow?

Me gusta.
EDIT: Oh yes. Oh yes.
Here's a link to my adventures.

The lensflare got on my nerves a bit, so I made a sleeker, custom one.
Random screenshot ahoy.

What I think about it?

I SIMPLY DON'T UNDERSTAND IT!!!

400 BILLION stars. That's 4 times the real number in our galaxy, The Milkyway, and double the number in the largest known galaxies.

SO MANY COMPLEX SHAPED ASTEROIDS!!! In a single solar system. I don't dare to think what number there would be in the whole game.

SO COMPLEX MOONS AND PLANETS!!! And 400 BILLION solar systems. I can't think about it. Help! No no no! I don't DARE to think about how many BYTES that would take. Peta, yotta! It would take YOTTABYTES!!!

Tell me how it's possible, please!

actually i fink 100 trillion > 400 billion :)

The Space Engine is very cool, but unlike Universe Sandbox, it is not a gravity simulator.

True, true.  I didn't really think of that.

I didn't know LOD 2/3 was buggy, also, I'm not entirely sure how this is a scary app.

The vastness of space could be scary for the first time.

I could probably relate to that in an example. Back many years ago when I was in camp and doing a camp out, I had woken up in the middle of the night (no reason at all, nothing to do with a dream) and when I saw the vast night sky, I suddendly felt like I was on the bottom of the planet and would fall off if I moved (and I knew that was physically impossible). It quickly subsided and I saw a few meteors. Anyways, I live in the city and you know, the city gkow and all that. Really though, it was like a visceral or primal feeling like awe or something.

I already knew space was vast and I already liked astronomy, but seeing the night sky like that for the first time is just an overpowering feeling.

I understand what you mean. For me it was more a rush of excitement than a fear, but there is a sort of overwhelming sense of emptiness, and a lot of the planets are without life.

Speaking of which, I found a star system that had two terras, both with life. what do I win?

Well yea, not EVERY single world will have life as we know it, and 'life not as we know it' is a possibility.
