Dark Matter ?
« on: June 24, 2009, 07:20:38 AM »
i've been wondering about dark matter when i stumbled upon this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHXv-NuSnP0&feature=channel

I also know the website of the map of the universe: http://www.atlasoftheuniverse.com/universe.html

hmm i think black holes are linked with dark matter somehow i mean, black holes can't be detected and they can't fall apart easily as we all know ;) but dark matter has the power to keep whole galaxies from falling apart. the part where our solar system is isn't affected by the black hole in the centre of our milky way but whats keeping us from drifting off into empty space? i more than likely think dark matter is linked with the formation of the universe. if anyone else has ideas of what dark matter is, please say.

Black holes are normal matter with such a high density that light cannot escape from it. Like a big star that explodes (supernova/hypernova), it sometimes leaves a black hole.
Dark matter is something diffrent. It's matter that doesn't interact with light/photons. So while black holes just have a huge gravity that doesn't allow the light to escape, dark matter just let's the light pass through it like there was nothing. Okay, the gravity of the dark matter can also bend light or things like that, exactly like the normal matter, but I don't think dark matter has much to do with black holes.
That's how I understand it at least.
