Planet Texture Generator
« on: June 01, 2011, 04:31:06 AM »
http://donjon.bin.sh/scifi/world/

I found an awesome planet generator, simply put in all of the properties and then click create and there you have it lots of information on the planet created as well as a seamless planet texture image at the top of the page!

The greyscale setting could be particularly useful to create coloured planets or for editing in a paint program.

Enjoy.

@NeutronStar: You can generate gas giant textures with this Planet Texture Generator tool. It's free, but there's no documentation that I can find and the interface is ... interesting. Great textures though. Check it out.

The top link is for the software repository, the second is a direct link to the zip for the patch.

The

DONJON Program is AWESOME.

I can do ALL of my Planets now - in some 12 Systems.

If you select 'Square' and 'Create' - you get a GIF File. NAME it.
Convert that into a .png File -
AND - Whoopie it loads into Uni Sand - as an alternative Planet Surface.
You have to use the Random Texture - and type in the NAME you gave to the Planet.

Now - Hmm - all I need now is a fairly easy way to create Asteroid Belts with Name-Able Asteroids, which you can change the Properties of.

Here's a couple more free planet texture generators. They can give you a bit more of a realistic surface than the donjon tool (which is still fun).

You get the best results if you are able to use a paint program w/layers (i.e. GIMP, Paint.NET or Photoshop) to process a bump map on the surface image.

I'm not sure what you mean. Can you describe the steps that you're taking?

You'd need a rectangular image for it to wrap the object correctly, if I'm reading your statement right.

I don't think so. But images with a height and width divisible by 16 work very well.

Can you post the file (or email it to me) and I'll test it for you.

I know there s this nice planet generator

http://emberintherain.com/community/index.php?/store/product/5-pxg-planet/

But we need to use Cinema 4D to make it work....is there any Planet surface generator that could match this one...without having Cinema 4D???

Thx

There doesn't seem to be any examples of what the surface generator is capable of in the videos they have up there so far, so it's really hard to judge. All of the presets that appear to come with the program are actually NASA maps from pixel emporium. I'm not sure that the plugin will have the capability to export 2D maps of generated surfaces, but it might.

It looks like a handy shortcut tool for animating and lighting planets in a Cinema 4D project, especially if you create your own maps.

ok but i know that they say that you can modified or creat planet in the site. I did download the free file and they give you surfaces in jpeg and tiff format.... so i guess this thing can give you something pretty interesting... i ll try to use them and show a picture.

I think you should bump up the segments, the edges are pretty sharp on the underlying polygon. I dunno man, it's a pretty monotone variation of pluto's surface map. That doesn't really count as a planet surface map generator. Are you able to determine if the program can generate its own surfaces, without using preset maps? And then export those generated maps as 2D image files? That would be something you could use with US.

BTW, here's an example of something that I did with Lunarcell for Photoshop and "rendered" in Orbiter (read: took a snapshot in-game). This doesn't have a cloud layer, but my current version does:

Yeah but the problem is we need to use C4D (Cinema 4D) I did download a part that its call R12 or something....theres many files in it...i know its use as an extension of C4D...the creator of this kinda extension say that you can creat planets....in 3D but since there s PNG for the surface i just wanted to show this. I know that i won t pay for C4D...so lol i won t try it...but it look like a pretty good 3-D program. Still i will use photoshop to modify my texture that i have...and i know i did download many lol. I need to repractice photoshop stuff lol

And by the way good photoshop!

I have the "False Colour" Relief Maps of Mars - which I downloaded from a Site

Now - guess what - the colours are actually useful.

The "lowest" parts are Dark Blue, Blue and Light Green.

Now - in my Game, we are actually Terraforming Mars - so the Blue and maybe Light Green parts would become Seas / Oceans.

Only problem is - the two views are circular pictures - I need to convert these to a single reactangular image ot 'Map' on Mars in Uni Sand.

How the HELL do we Insert a Pic in Here ???

It may be possible to re-project the images. I can't say without seeing them. Do you know what projection the images are in? Most likely, the effort involved would be significant, if you're attempting to be accurate and use them with a real Mars bump map, for example.

I think it would be much easier to take a b/w or true color spherical image map of Mars and recolor it, honestly. Are you familiar with any paint programs, such as Photoshop, Paint.net or GIMP?

I don't really have a lot of Software - and no money to buy it really

Hmmm - the only thing I seem to have is Paint - DOH

Riiight - I get it now -
As you can see - it would really serve my purpose - if I could Streeeeetch the views to squares and join them together.

Try using Gimp.  It's a free, full-featured (more or less) graphics editor.

karakris, there's actually some decent terraformed Mars maps on the google images. Unless you're showing the steps of terraforming it.

Paint.NET and GIMP are both free, but you have to take the time to learn them.  GIMP has massive community support, plugins and tutorials. Paint.NET is just a little bit eaiser to use for some, but GIMP is the bomb.

It's not worth it trying to reproject the images that you have, trust me, it won't work. You'll never get them to line up right, and all that stuff around the edges will just look like crap. You _do not_ have to bother, though, to get what you want.

Here's what you do instead:

Download the free full color 1k pixel mars color surface map and bump maps from Pixel Emporium:

Color Surface image:
http://planetpixelemporium.com/download/download.php?mars_1k_color.jpg

Topography (height) image:
http://planetpixelemporium.com/download/download.php?mars_1k_topo.jpg

Download and install GIMP:
http://www.gimp.org/

Bookmark the GIMP documentation, tutorial and  forum sites. Use them:

GIMP documentation:
http://docs.gimp.org/2.6/en/

GIMP tutorials (google for more, and check forums):
http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/

GIMP forum:
http://www.gimptalk.com/index.php

HINT: You'll need to use Layers and Masks.

Layers will allow you to make changes that do not alter the original image. For example, you open the mars color map in GIMP, it becomes layer 1, or whatever. Then, you can open a new layer above it, and paint new colors there. The original mars image on layer 1 is unchanged, you can always go back to it.

Masking will allow you to only do stuff to a portion of the image that you want to. For example, you could mask only the basins in the image and color them blue or whatever, without altering the rest of the image, and keeping the outlines tight.

Above all, have fun. Don't be daunted by ramping up on learning, once you get going then it's really fun.

Cheers

Riiight - Thanks Guys

I downloaded GIMP - but not learned how to use it yet.

However -

I loaded "stole" a Jpeg of Mars - Terraformed.  This one I am using - for Mars.

Also - I loaded "stole" a Jpeg of Venus - Terraformed - and fiddled it a bit, using Software I already had.

I "Generated" one I like a lot better - see bottom Pic.  This one I will use - for Venus
