Size comparison
« on: April 01, 2009, 10:39:00 PM »
Greetings

Am I crazy or there was a Star Size Comparison simulation that showed different stars, the Sun and planets of the Solar System?

I'm looking for it to show for some students and can't seem to find it. May anybody help me?

Thanks!

The ancient version 1.0.351 had a simulation with this star size comparision.

Attached is the file of the simulation, save it in the My Documents->Universe Sandbox->Systems folder of Universe Sandbox in your computer. Run it opening, in Universe Sandbox Open menu, My Systems->Star Size comparison.

Note:
I´m Brasilian too  ;)

Thanks APODman!!

Yeah, I've seen you around Orkut in Astronomia!

Do you have other costumized systems?

The reason that this simulation was removed is because you can now compare the bodies of any system using the "Chart Mode" feature.

- Open any System
- Right click to open the control panel.
- Click "Chart Mode"
- Right click again to change the sort order for this list (Mass, Density, Diameter)

Note that not all bodies have a valid mass or diameter (so some of them may bunch up at one end).

You can see a screenshot of this feature here:

(3rd picture from the top)

Open up "Stars - Within 16 parsecs" (or any simulation with some stars)
Change the Chart Mode to "Stars" to view a Hertzsprung–Russell diagram.

I'm currently working on simplifying the user interface. The chart mode feature will be much more obvious and easy to use in a future release.

Hey Dan, I haven't seen this upgrade in US.

It's better than the original simuation!

Great work, thanks.

P.S.: I'll be using US in some classes to kids 9 years old and I'll post the results here latter.

After I created a few simulations with lined up bodies I thought that there has to be an easier, more automatic way of comparing the sizes of various bodies. That's how I came up with Chart Mode.

Something I'm working on for a future release is to actually plot the relative masses, densities, etc along an axis (kind of like how the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram works now) instead of just lining them up in order.

P.S.: I'll be using US in some classes to kids 9 years old and I'll post the results here latter.

I totally look forward to hearing about this. There's little I get more passionate about than helping to educate people about the universe we find ourselves in. :)
