Nintendo DS Concept
« on: March 13, 2009, 09:39:39 AM »
Hello everybody. i was thinking: if i'm in the bus/train/plain i can't play universe sandbox. so a consolle version of universe sandbox. like ''Universe Sandbox DS''. so i made a consept of ''Universe Sandbox DS''.

I have good thoughts about it.
like this

Touch!
-with the stick of your DS you can make the universe.
-like we just left click on the PC to get the commands, just press ''X''.
-and press ''Start'' to open the menu.
-press Y to get a list of objects and touch to laungh the object.
-press the arrow keys to move you in the system.
-press ''B'' to fly in a space ship and (again) press the arrow keys to move.

Wi-Fi
-use Wi-fi to trade sytems.
-use Wi-fi to get update's.

Hot Keys
-R+L orbit all
-R+A restart
-L+A auto system
-L+B focus on system center
-L+X zero all velocities
-L+Y reverse all velocities
-R+X chart mode
-R+Y new empty system

Just an Idea. i got the cover
i hope you will like it

It's a good idea :) (p.s. i think that the first image was better)

however, the cpu of a ds is much lower than a pc's, so you can have just a few objects (not rings or galaxies) and maybe just on 2D. (p.s. on an airplane or bus you can still use a notebook  ;) ).

In my opinion a better idea could be creating a simplified version of Universe Sandbox for a didactical use (to make childs learn about gravity and the solar system) :)

Good idea, but as previously pointed out, the processor just wouldn't be able to handle it, Plus, the amount of effort that the developer would have to go through in order to get Nintendo to approve it would be tremendous.

Plus you'd have to consider that the language that Universe Sandbox is written in may not be compatible with the DS.

However, a simpler option would be the iPhone/iPod Touch, It sports a 533 MHz processor, compared to the DS' 67MHz. Add 128MB of RAM. And, with a Multitouch screen, you could get maximum control over your universe.

And the really nice bit about the iPhone/iPod Touch, The developers license is only $99, and that entitles you to all of the Developers Software, the ability to test it on the actual device, Full Support, and the ability to publish the content to the Appstore.

It sounds like a great idea and looks like you have worked a bit on it, but I don't think the DS will have the power to do it.
Perhaps making it possible only to use bodies like planets, stars and so on, without the particles like in galaxies or rings around planets, plus asteroid belts.
I think the DS would be able to handle a few of these objects. Wonder if it can in 3D...
Hmm, perhaps a 3D mode without particles, and a 2D mode with (a low amount of) particles as an option when you make the simulation. :)

But how could it handle the distances and sizes of the objects aswell? Guess that will be pretty hard too.

But yes, if I saw it in the shops one day I would surely buy it. I only have one game for my DS right now.
I think Dan could make much money on such a game... Most of the DS games cost like hmm... More than what the computer program costs? It will be a completely diffrent kind of game than the normal games.

SuperBova:
These screenshot mockups are awesome.

Good idea, but as previously pointed out, the processor just wouldn't be able to handle it...

I suspect that this is true. The DS does support 3D graphics, but the processor is so underpowered that more that 10 objects with mass would probably bring the framerate to a crawl.

And there would be a number of other issues to deal with (like Nintendo certification) and finding a publisher willing to fork up the money for cartridge manufacture. And that's on top of the actual development. :)

Despite these issues... I would love to bring Universe Sandbox to a handheld device. Thanks again SuperBova for the inspiration.

It looks very good, but I think the new cover should show some of the interaction inside the program. :)
Now it just shows two galaxies, I think it would explain the program better if it showed them while they were smashing together, like in the first image. :)
