The functions the games are based around become irrelevant. EU3 -> V2 because imperialism, new global trade stuffs, industrial revolution, absolutism is pretty much done, liberalism is taking it's place.

but couldn't that be done with a government type changes and building types? is it necessary to change the game for another few hundred years?

Economy in V2 would not be possible with mods in EU3 it's not possible. Not so sure about the rest but there's also the flavor and the "great wars" and the new diplomacy and everything. You would need new buttons and new variables, you could probably, given the actual EU3 code, change it, but it wouldn't be very correctly themed (imo).

Yes, it seems strange, but Civ 5 manages to extend gameplay beyond 2050 just fine imo, I don't see why it's not left as an option in the core game. Civ 5 has an option to auto-end the game at 2050 - but if I'm in the middle of an important war then, or I am just about to win some victory type or something else I enjoyed being in the middle of, ending the game because of some arbitrary day occuring seems incredibly stupid.

March of the Eagles allows for continuation of the game, so EU4 may very well do the same.

mfw there aren't wastelands in eu4
did they change the colonisation system so that those areas are much more difficult to colonise
