i got up to 31 diamonds strip mining before my player collided at high speeds off center with a mass of lava ~~creating a moon made of diamonds, pickaxes, various inventory items, and material from both colliding objects~~

on my singleplayer, happened when I was blowing up a cave. The TNT was actually pretty far from the lava but it teleported and placed it in the lava

What I've done is to just run around at surface in some place where people haven't mined everything already. On the surface I usually find plenty of nether quartz. I usually go for the glowstone mainly, and just mine some nether quartz on the way, still getting plenty. I've never strip mined for quartz or other things in the nether really.

strip mining is much worse for getting quartz in the nether than just exploring new areas of the nether and mining as much quartz as you see
