Weather Reporting or something I need a better subject
« on: January 20, 2011, 06:04:10 PM »
Okay, so I'm thinking of starting a project that will help me with my weather learning by setting up a system.

Frequently Asked Questions That Weren't Asked But Might Be (FAQTWABMB)
I'm interested! What do I do?
There are 3 classes of members.
C Class, which reports on cloud cover and wind direction, if it rained at all that day, and simple stuff like that.
B Class, which reports on the above, as well as if they have any type of thermometer and hygrometer.
A Class, which reports full weather reports with weather stations.

I don't have any thermometers. I can't participate, right?
Yes you can, read the question above.

As you can see, you don't need $200 to be part of this project. If you're only a C class... You can simply buy a $10 thermometer (they usually come with hygrometers (humidity meters))

So I have this stuff... What now?
Post here whenever you can, but it's recommended to post your weather once a day.

How to "register"?
Say what class you want to be, and I'll be expecting your data. I'll also need your location, simply a city or major city (if you live in a metro area).

What locations are accepted?
From the Pacific ocean to Montana, Wyoming, Utah, and New Mexico. British Columbia and Baja Mexico are as well.  :)

What will you do with this data?
I will make a daily chart with your location's information on it. This coupled with infrared imagery will be used to predict the weather along the Pacific West Coast.

I don't like weather.
That's not a question. Go away.

I don't want to do this, and I don't like weather.
See above.

Members of this Project
C Naru523 - Sacramento, CA
A Darvince - Tempe, AZ
A NeutronStar - Phoenix, AZ

Manual
Contents
I. C Class
Ia. What's expected?
II. B Class
IIa. What's expected?
III. A Class
IIIa. What's expected?
IV. Techniques to get accurate information

I. C Class

The C Class is a simple, but yet essential part of the USFUSWCW Project. It is essentially free. No equipment is needed. The only requirements are that you aren't blind, and you live in an area that wind is not obstructed very badly.

Ia. What's Expected?
Every day, particularly in the evening, I expect a report of the following:

II. B Class

B Class is a class that has a bit extra information over C class. This extra information can be obtained with little money. A simple thermometer can be purchased at Walmart/Target for around $10 to $20. Rain gauges are also very inexpensive.

IIa. What's expected?

The following is expected by B class members:
  • The extra data you have (recommended to be hourly, but not required)

III. A Class

A Class are the highest members of this project. They have the most information of value, but do not get discouraged if you don't have the money to buy a $100+ weather station. C and B class members are just as useful.

IIIa. What's Expected?

This meant that you are showing discrimination against people in the East Coast.

I don't need any east coast info. I'm producing forecasts for my fellow Pacific ocean lovers.  :)

lol. I encourage you to become B class (you get to be blue! :P), but temperature doesn't really do much for me, yet. ;) It's your choice. C Class it is. I'll put up a list of registrants now...

How does having a weather station have anything to do with these forums?

Reason for being west coast... 1. I really don't care much for world weather. 2. This will be time consuming. More area = more work: This is because I want an understanding of synoptic scale local weather 3. Adding Denmark to the list of locations would require the need for more people in Europe, which we don't have any Europe forum frequenters here.

idc, depends what they are. lol

For Naru and Darvince. Post the amount of cloud cover (in eighths), if any rain/snow/hail fell (if so, around what time, to what time.), and wind direction (where the wind is coming from). Also any other details you can see with your eye that I may need to know.

If your area is under any type of thunderstorm watch, if possible report every hour, and keep an eye on the weather, report any lightning.

Yeah. Simply put: Report once a day unless you're having interesting weather.

If Darvince ends up doing B class, I expect a temperature report from when you got the temperature, and if possible humidity.  :)

What happened to Colorado.

Also,

right nao:

52.7°F
0.0mph
30.16 inHg
33% humidity
WNW wind (wtf)
slightly hazy

I can't do rain because the rain gauge is fail. You can just open it and make it think there was 1"+ by flicking the collection area, because each flick is counted as 0.01". Also it just flat out won't work.

The rain gauge wont work. :-\ It just sits and sits, then when it rains nothing happens because it runs through batteries extremely quickly, eating up the battery supply of AA and AAA.

Situation: Code 00
cloud cover: No data
Temp: 59.4 F
Wind: WNW at 0.0 kts
21% humidity
1017.5 hPa

My class A weather!

Does yours have any central machine thing that has all the data on a display? There should also be a way to change units. I changed mine from inHg > mb/hPa and mph > kts

1021.2 hPa is your pressure reading... heh. They are close, but on some aspects considerably off...  :)

I'll start mapping tomorrow. Also consider using the link in the "Manual" on the first post to the 100 weather codes. Some of them will come in handy. They help describe your situation more accurately.

Yeah... the history data goes back 17 days.
Probably too many feral cats hanging out just outside by the thermometer/hygrometer. lol
Only one that doesn't work is rain gauge, but I doubt I'll be needing that often since the climate is arid.

Also you make it sound like a large forum.

Darvince, do you have a viewer program that you can grap the data in, and post it up here?
