Ubuntu 14.04 Alpha 18.1 fails to launch

Crashes immediatley after launch when using Ubuntu 14.04.

When I verify the integrity of the game files it tells me 65 files have failed and will be downloaded, still crashes after launch. Uninstalled Universe Sandbox2, reinstalled, reverified the integrity and everytime there are 65 files to download.

Any suggestions? I also submitted this same information to the support email.

I am getting same error on Ubuntu 15.10 64bit, thought this was something to do with issue with an overlay (which I actually disabled, despite it still leaves that message on the log) but it actually crashes even when I execute Universe Sandbox.x86_64 directly from the command line from the directory where it's installed. (Player_direct.log, pretty much identical issue, except for some lines with overlay error.)

It runs fine on the same version of Ubuntu on my laptop. The difference is that I have an Intel graphic card on that, and this one I'm experiencing the issue is on AMD graphic card. (I've attached glxinfo.)

It's a shame it doesn't work :-[, I was looking forward running it on my fast machine after I've tried on my laptop. (Which is actually amazing it ran decently, the CPU's not even close to the minimum CPU requirement...)

Note: I've tried backtracking versions and see, and it seems to be something happened between alpha 16.1 and alpha 17 that caused this error. Alpha 16.1 worked fine, albeit with the warning that I have 336MB of video memory instead of 512MB that it requires... Alpha 17 crashes.

I've heard that the ATI GLX drivers are not always "up to par"...unfortunately.  Have you considered borrowing or purchasing an nVidia card (even a cheap, low-end one) just to test your system and see if your Radeon (or its drivers) aren't the cause of your problem?

You might also consider Mint 17.1.  Based on Ubuntu 14.04, Mint 17.1 includes Steam in its repositories and it works quite well.  Again, it's a matter of testing, just to see if its a problem with Ubuntu 14.04, perhaps an incomplete install.  Mint 17.1 includes a great many drivers/support software that Ubuntu may not, particularly when it comes to graphics.

We've received multiple reports from Linux users with AMD cards, so we suspect there might be something going on between these drivers and the version of Unity we've been using for the past few alphas.

We've uploaded a test version for Linux users, which is built with Unity 5.3. Alpha 18 of Universe Sandbox ² was built with an older version, 5.2.

Anyone who has had this issue, please follow these instructions to switch to this version, which is called "test-of-linux-fix":

We suspect there are still problems with this version, but hopefully it can at least start up. Let us know if it works. If it does, then we'll know if it's a Unity & AMD issue that's been fixed in Unity 5.3 and will be fixed when we release our next alpha.
