That is, what variables and processes are used to calculate the Earth Similarity Index and Likelihood of Life?

As mentioned in the release notes, the Earth Similarity Index compares mean radius, bulk density, escape velocity, and surface temperature. It is based on http://phl.upr.edu/projects/earth-similarity-index-esi.

The Life Likelihood Index is derived from the Earth Similarity Index plus considerations of water, rotation, and atmospheric mass.

Oh, cool. Sorry, I didn't see that in the release notes.

Do planets with extremely short days still have life at the poles or no?

Why would planets with extremely short days not have life at the poles? Those areas would be the least effected by the shortness of the days, after all.

The Trials and Variables are almost complete and a cure for the Flare seems right around the corner  ;)
